i did my dakota r/t a couple months back on jack stands, but it sits significantly higher than the TL. it would be tight - get it as high in the air as you can, but it is possible.

took about 3 hours to remove old, install new, install new tie rod ends. another 30 -45 to fill and bleed the system. this was my first time ever doing he job, so it could be done much quicker.

I have pulled mine off before with nothing other than a set of jackstands. Its not terribly hard to do on the TL.

thanks for the step by step. im feeling a lot more confident now for sure when it says remove the steering wheel does that mean from the rod of removing the whole unite out thru the fire wall? not sure if that makes sense... do i have to disconnect the airbag when doing this? thanks for all the help guys

You dont have to remove the steering colum/wheel but it makes assembly and removal easier. I didnt, and just worked around it. And make sure to DISCONNECT the battery first so there is no possibility of setting the air bag off

so i followed all the directions.. pretty straight forward untill u get to actually removing the POS from the car. ive pulled twisted cursed took a break cursed and twisted some more but no go. this thing will not come out. there seems to be a large piece at the top that will not allow the rack to come out. im about ready to use a hand grenade if i dont get it out soon. any ideas? theres a piece of metal blocking the whole thing from dropping out but theres no directions to remove it. i think its part of the frame.... so ready to be done!

05 TSX rack removal, trick?

I'm having the same problem. I have a 2005 TSX and followed a long sequence of steps to loosen the power steering rack-and-pinion (that leaks like a sieve now). The bolts are out, rubber freed up, lines are disconnected, and I can see down the tube and all along it. I can shift the rack a little bit but can't get it out. But there's a (welded?) brace on top of one of the bolts along the steering box that isn't mentioned anywhere but requires moving the rack forward or to the left well over an inch before lifting or rotating the assembly. But then I'm instantly up against brake lines, undercarriage braces, or restrictions under the rear motor mount. I've tried everything I've seen described and any approach I can imagine, but can't get the rack out. I can't get room to rotate it forward.

I removed the L & R mid-subframe brackets, loosened the L & R front subframe brackets, and loosened the L & R rear subframe brackets. I don't get the 1-3/16" clearance on the rear bracket - and maybe that's the problem. But I also don't want a subframe landing on my chest (theoretically I have the engine supported from above).

Do you know exactly how to move the rack so it will come out the wheel well? I'm thinking the '05 is different than the '04 or possibly later years, and definitely different than other models Honda & Acura.

this is the 99-03 TL section, so not a surprise things are different and not part of our diy
Have you tried a google search?
or looked in the TSX forum on here? you need gurus of your model at this point

I guess I found this thread and site directly from Google, so didn't realize I was in a "TL" only section. I'll hunt up a TSX section. I eventually figured it out on my own. I've written up my approach and will post it over in the TSX section if appropriate, and, if I can, include the pictures (pix/illustrations are always helpful)

I know this is a huge longshot, cuz this thread is 9 years old, but can anyone help me? I've got a 99 CL that needs a new Rack and Pinion, but I've never done anything like this.
I've got stands and most likely all the tools I'll need.

You said "thanks for the step-by-step" but I didnt see any step-by-step posted. Where could I find one?

Thanks guys!!!

Lish

You may find more specific rack and pinion replacement information by searching on the 1st gen CL forum in regards to your 99 CL.

With that said, the link below has 'step by step' info regarding the rack and pinion replacement for a 2 gen CL, It may very well be similar to the procedure on a 1st gen CL; however, I'm not really sure.

Good Luck!

Step by step ?

I know this may be a long shot but is there a place I can see the step by step ? Because I can’t find it.

Download the service manual HERE. Rack removal starts on page 17-35.

IIRC, you don't have to remove the steering wheel and airbag but you will want to secure the steering wheel in the center position with some straps or something to prevent screwing up the cable reel.
