Anyone know how extensive this is (I know much of it is timing belt, water pump, pulleys and plugs) and what is a fair price? My local dealer quoted me around $1,200, but said there is a great deal of inspection that could reveal more.

FWIW, I always have it serviced there, and though there is more to inspect, they see this car each time it is serviced.

Not a horrible quote, but you might be able to do better. Maybe try some local Honda dealerships.

Anything over $700 is too much. Timing belt and tuneup DIY's are in the garage. Not as difficult as you think. If you're located in NJ that special is a steal.

Keep in mind that the link I sent you doesn't include the Tensioner, the Plugs, or the Serpentine Belt.

Although, I'm not sure what the additional cost will be!.

That's highway robbery. Sounds like a conspiracy if all the shops in the area are charging that hourly rate / hrs. Plus the shops make so much margin on part markup it's sickening.



NGK Iridiums, Gates Belt and Auto TB Tensioner should only be an extra $150. Labor should be inclusive so it shouldn't cost any more.

valve adjustment is a good idea now
Dealer labor is 100-125 per hour average and charge 6 plus hours for the job

the extra parts on inspection will be the idler pulley and tensioner- do those for sure!
anywhere from 700 to 1500 is average depending on where you live
that NJ honda dealer is giving insane price

a special ziner deal on just the parts from vendor here- `way less than what they charge if the car is in the shop`--295 dollars
expect more at shop markup

realize that when a shop buys the parts, they also have to warranty the part and their labor if it fails,,
so they make profit on parts,,usually 200-300 percent markup!!
but thats what it takes to keep the shop doors open~

I took my car in recently for the A124 service and found out from my local dealership, Nalley Acura in Atlanta that the cost was going to be $1,400. I almost flipped out. They too, have serviced my car from day 1. My service advisor also told me that we may not need all the gaskets I was quoted, but that would only tak about $100 off. I asked if this was the best price and was told to look online for coupons. I really like the service department here and as far as I'm concerned they have me for life. However, I know they are high on labor costs, etc. I just know to shop around and get them to match prices.

None of these "outrageous" quotes even come close to what Bay Area dealerships are charging for a "4" service... It is $2400 total, including valve adjustment. If you exclude this, it is still $1900!!

I came from Mercedes and Acura actually has a higher labor rate!!
I'm either going with my trusted Indy or a Honda place. I'm about 2K miles away.....

you have to look at the whole picture, not just the labor price

Acura is just as proud of their parts as any auto maker. And Mercedes never wanted $250 bucks to replace my headlights.
Either way I'm much better off going Indy or Honda.....

Here in charlotte I posted a link to the honda dealership which is doing that service including water pump for 599. You bring the honda belt and tentionor they are free labor. The plugs should be done at this time as part of the service since they are due.

That DOES include the serpentine belt. The tensioner is an extra $75.

for those of you fellas that are due for the timing belt service and were quoted $1400, you may want to consider driving the car to NJ... even with gas and time, it will save you almost half the price...

My 2004 TL has 110,000 miles on it and i just got the "Service Due Soon A124" notice. How long do i have before the belt snaps? Should i stop driving it immediately, or can i wait till this weekend to get it serviced?

I still have about 3k miles left to go. In cold temps my belt is noticeably loud at idle and gets louder while I turn around in my driveway. Will I be okay to wait til the 105k mark? Or should I get it done right away?

You only need to worry when it says "service past due". then your engine will explode.

after reaching 100k, just had my timing belt and transmission fluid replaced..

i was told that not to do them at once...there are just a warning sign..you need to prioritize what's most important...perhaps broken timing belt will cost you almost new engine...

What brainiac told you you shouldn't do them at the same time? That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. I'd flip the individual who told you that 'the bird'.

I had my trans fluid replaced when I had my timing belt job done.

at the time, money for maintenance was an issue and $1,200 a little stiff...

so Acura service advisor has recommended to start with the timing belt and transmission fluid then come back again for the others..

The way you made it sound was like THEY said you can't for some logistical reason on THEIR end rather than your financial situation.

Get the trans fluid done at a local shop. You'll likely save some real $$$ that way. Just make sure they use the correct tranny fluid.
