Oil consumption warranty

I got the warranty extension info in the mail and have 124000 on the car. I took it to the dealer. They need to do an oil consumption test. As a result I have to pay them for an oil change. Does this make sense? Why should I have to pay for the service to check if somethings wrong? They also said 1qt/1000 MI is considered normal. That sounds nothing but ludicrous.
Anything I can do to get my $50 oil change back?

I asked my dealer about this

They said they recommend the oil change with them so that they have a baseline

Not sure if it's true or not

The 1qt/1000 being normal I believe is per Honda/acura

I agree with you that it sounds ridiculous but it is what it is

My 2010 is undergoing the oil consumption test now, and it required an oil change, which makes sense. I was also told Acura considers 1 qt. per 1,000 miles normal, which is simply absurd. If you're adding that much, it's basically a complete "transfusion" between service intervals, so you should only need to change the filter!

The service guy essentially admitted that 1 qt. per 1,000 miles is ridiculous, but I'm sure they're bound by Acura's guidelines. If the test reveals excessive consumption that doesn't quite reach 1 qt. per 1,000 miles, and they won't do the fix, I'll put my lawyer hat back on (haven't practiced for years) and write an appropriately forceful letter to Acura, and see what happens. Consumer Reports recently published an article about excessive oil consumption, which could provide some support for those of us in this situation.

I recently went through this. Speak with a regional representative.

To what end? To get a reimbursement for the cost of the 'test'? How do you find a regional rep?

Just got back from the dealer, and the techs found no oil consumption after the 1,000 miles. I'm surprised, but so it goes. In my experience oil consumption is not consistent by any stretch, so I'll just keep an eye on it, and if it seems to be a real problem again, I'll do the test again.

BTW, there was no charge for this test.

In my experience, the first 1000 miles will not burn as much as the second 1000 miles.

I informed them of this and was dismissed. I drove another set and went back to show them. I asked to speak with a regional representative about the issue. The regional reps are able to approve a repair even if you fail the test.

Can you re-write that in something resembling the English language?

Interesting. I'll keep checking every 1,000 miles, and see what happens.

You may want to keep sort of log and photograph your dipstick to show any engine oil loss.

Make sure to test your oil level under the same circumstances every time. It doesn't really matter if it is hot, warm or cold as long as it is the same each time.

If your drive from work is about the same every day then you could check a half hour after you park the car. Otherwise you can check in the morning after the car has been sitting all night.

Start now so you have a baseline. In your log, note date, mileage and the picture of the dipstick. Make sure to hold it level.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have now gone through 3000 miles. Last time I was told that the third visit should be the last. Apparently they are only finding minimal oil consumption, as expected. The dealer suggested bringing it in in another 1000 miles.

Has anyone got a dealer to replace the seals in the engine? My current TSX consumes no where near the oil of my 2005 (sold it a year ago today ). All of these visits are free and include a free wash. I guess I can just keep bringing it in until they say stop right? My first visit was at 124XXX miles, so I wanted to get in before I got out of the warranty period.

What is everyone else doing?

Been through too much of this issue. First they will want for you to go away. Be persistent and dont pay for the oil changes.
Next step they will want to replace the piston rings.

So just went to my dealer for this, and was told, drive it, when I either check the dipstick and it's low, or the low oil light come on, bring it back and they document it then, no more 1,000 mile check in intervals. Maybe it's just my dealership but as of tomorrow when I get my car back after getting a new window run channel, new key fob, and new VTC actuator so begins the oil consumption test.

How do we know the dealer is not overfilling the engine oil at the start of the consumption test? That way the vehicle will show minimal if any consumption.

How can you tell if your car has been overfilled? I check the oil when warm (after 3 minutes of rest) per the manual. The oil is all the way up the dipstick.

Funny you should say that, I need to go back and tell them that is exactly the case. It's WAY past the top mark.

Dealers often overfill and it is bad for the catalytic converter.

Take it back and make them adjust the level.

This car does not have an oil level, but an oil pressure. Its a joke they say to check oil at gas station after driving it. They can lead to oil expansion depending on warmth of engine oil. Its like they knew they were going to have issues from the start and did not want to redo all these 3.7L engines. Rock cold overnight sit is the best for accuracy. If I have this issue on my car imam see if I can swap in the 3.5L. I don't care if power is lost at least I wont have engine failure.
