Will my parents find out about my speeding ticket?
Well I finally got caught by the popo today going 46 in a 30 zone trying to get to a friggin' job interview The guy was nice enough to record it as 45 so I fall in the 1-15 catergory but still... it's a friggin' ticket.
I'm at school in Santa Cruz right now and live in an apartment off campus. The car is registered under my dad's name and home address but the cop also wrote down the local address for my apartment in Santa Cruz for the court appearance date to be mailed to. I know that if I go to court on that date and go to traffic school, this ticket will not be on my license for 18 months. Will/can my dad somehow find out about this ticket, or can I just get by like a ?
Reading some old threads is this speeding ticket in Cali $270 + court fee + traffic school?

Actually not sure about the laws in Cali, but I know in VA if you are over 18 you can just pay the ticket by yourself IF it is not a reckless ticket. If its reckless then you HAVE to appear in court.
But even if you do have to go to court, since you are over 18 you should be able to just go by yourself. But, like I said Cali might be different. Thats just how it is here.

:shakehead Several years ago I was doing 70 in a 55 zone and got caught in a speed trap. This was on a dark, back road so I was going a little fast. I got a ticket and was told I had to either go to court or just pay it and go to traffic school. I went to pay it and went to traffic school and my parents never knew about it and still don't.

tell them now- they did it when they were young- all parents have done more stuff than you think--and surprise!---they are onto your stories and scams, and let you do what you want- everyone has to learn their lessons- while they laugh behind your back saying,,,you remember when you had the charger and we were at the lake-
and the cop only wrote you up for 70 when we had been doing 105 ---we lucked out that night!!
Since the ticket may well go to them as registered owner, better to call now and say- hey if you get anything in the mail---read it to me then forward it to me asap
Read the Ca traffic court info online- fines vary in each area- last year my wife got 52 in 35- with court fees and bs fines total cost 200+ traffic school $25
Do traffic school if the court allows it-
on the official ticket that will get mailed to dad- it will say if you can attend school or not
Some offenses they wont grant it- reckless driving, whatever the local judge considers excessive speeding--racing
As long as you can pay for it out of your own funding, call dad,
'hey I was running late to a JOB interview and got popped doing xx in xx'
He cant be mad- you were looking for work- that gets a lot of Goodwill from parents~
I know, been on both ends of it
Just dont do it again- watch ypur speed everywhere- cities and states are BROKE and will happily take your money--then support a congressmans lunch per diem with it!!

note on traffic school
If you do an online class, it can take a week or more to get the certificate the court requires mailed to you from the school
Only a few courts are set up to get it emailed direct from the school.
The court needs the paperwork- and they grant NO extensions just because you did the class online 2 days before the deadline and didnt get the paper,
so the court said ok- we already got the money- heres a point on your record- and BTW you cant use school again in the next 18 months because we already approved it- you paid for it- we dont care if you were late and it didnt help you~

speeding ticket price depends on which county you get the ticket in.
CHP was sitting on the shoulder and clocked me at about 100 in a 65mph zone at the 55/73 interchange (Orange County) two years ago. wrote my speed as 86mph and ticket was about $170 + traffic school.

it will show up on the insurance. when i got stopped for doing 64 in a 35, i went to traffic school, and when it came time to pay my insurance it showed up on the paper that i got stopped. also if they go to secretary of state and get a drivers license record it will show up also as a speeding ticket and that u went to school.
what i do now is i tell them what happened and say that i will take care of it.

The whole point of Ca driver/traffic school is that NO point or record of anything ever shows up- your insurance is not affected or notified-
It may show up on the in cop car computer- the cop DOES know your history when he casually ask- So - hows your record????

Thanks for all the info guys.
I'm completely financially dependent on them right now lol... and they're paying my college tuition, rent, living necessities. Even if "I" pay for the ticket, it was money my parents gave me... so yeah my parents' are going to be pissed, especially my mom cuz she is always on my ass about not getting a ticket; my dad can't say shit though, he's gotten a lot of speeding tickets.
I'm going to call them once I get a job so I can be like, "I have good news and some bad news"

Fess up to your mistakes. Take it as a "It's okaaaaay. Now you knooooooow." Majority has gone through it. It'll help you out in the future too. My advice is that it's better to fess up to your mistakes and at least try to provide the best solution than to hide it. At my work, the client is a lot happier with this mentality.

call today!!!- truth now beats truth later- which is seen as withholding aka LIE!!!
being an adult is about taking responsibilty for all your actions and consequences
Mom will be less mad because you were going to an interview- not that being even later to arrive paid off for you.....maybe NOW you understand what she meant~~~
Moms forgive- dads find a suitable payback- life goes on
Better a call saying- hey I got a ticket-
than a call saying- you wrecked the car,
ran over a nun pushing a baby carriage-with triplets-
in a school zone-
while you were drunk~
No accident??- whew!!! thats a parents nightmare--- ticket= No big deal-
200 bucks---- looks like someone is mowing the lawn and painting the house as payback for the 200 from dads wallet
Better traffic school than the giant hike in their insurance premium
Leave earlier and use less gas as a bonus! good luck on your job search!

I can make a throttle block to limit your access to power if needed~
Devised it when I learned how the wife was driving the TL
She knew far too much about vtec operation-- and how good the brakes work, for my comfort!

I believe in California, its $11-$15 per mph you are over the speed limit. Usually, if you've been good with your driving, the judge will give a break on your fine. Unfortunately, I've been through this process with getting 3 speeding tickets within the first year of driving which was the provision period in CA. First one was 2 weeks after I got my license, racing on the freeway, luckily I got pulled over by an INDIAN cop who was speaking to me in my language which was friggin' awesome, he let me go with 78 on the ticket. My fine should have been almost $800 but paid $120 and traffic schooled that one. Second one, 80 in a 65, got that as a 79. Paid $170 for that one, took a hit on my license and insurance. Third, doing "44" in a 25, which they caught me by laser and couldn't fight it. Paid $250 for that one, took another hit on my license and insurance. But the best way to avoid a speeding ticket is to AVOID THE URGE TO PUNCH THE ACCELERATOR! So you might get lucky with the judge, but let them know your situation and you'll be granted a lesser fine and plus your traffic school.

If you don't tell them now you are going to get screwed because they are going to be even angrier with you that you didn't tell them after it happened. Just be honest.

If you were 16, this might be a problem...But you're 19 years old, and at college. I honestly doubt your parents will care that much about a speeding ticket, there are more important things to worry about. Just wait until you get your first MIP, then you can worry about your parents.

Just chillen..
You seem like a good kid, which your parents support you a 110% of the time. Then been through this, and you are going through this. Confess and they shouldn't say nothing. If you want to really get even, just tell them you'll pay for the ticket by working and whatnot that is if you dont work already.. Good luck, let us know how it went.

I would just confess, its not something worth hiding.
If you leave the ticket as it and pay for it will show up on ur insurance due to points, as someone said above but if you try to fight the ticket and get it knocked down to a equipment failure then it will not show up. Im not sure how Cali or the village/county in which the areae you recieved the ticket may handle it. some of them are just looking for money whcih allows you to drop it to less of a charge which equals less points, etc.

I don't know how about in CA but here in CT If I get a ticket I would sign not guity and appear in court for a donation that cheaper than the orginal ticket also the ticket wouldn't go into your record.

Glad to hear you fessed up because there are ways to find this stuff out. If you pay your own insurance, it is less likely.
There is a company called ChoicePoint (though they were just bought, so I don't know their soon to be new name) that gathers this information and sends it to the insurance companies.
My insurance company found out about my speeding ticket and raised my rates when the next invoice period came due. Since then (7 years ago), I've been ticket free and have switched insurance companies, but the new insurance company even knew about it, but said no problems since it was so long ago.

Just tell your parents. That's not that fast and besides, they would rather hear this from you rather than get a letter in the mail/call from ins. company/find out from a friend.

Lol yeah I would just man up and tell them. Everybody gets a speeding ticket once out of their lives. Lol 46 in a 30? Try tellin' your parents you did 103 in a 55. Yes I was there once. Just show up to court and most likely they will give you a probation before judgement like they do here in maryland. You show up, pay the fine, no points (or better, the cop doesnt show up at all and the whole thing is dropped). My fine was $500 and I was in college lol (no points or driving school!). You can run the risk of not telling them but you better pray that you do not get any points because it will make your pop's insurance rate go up and he will likely want to know why lol. good luck bro.

The first ticket i got was when i was 16, no job. What i learned was you cant beat those damn red light cameras . I came home went up to dad and all i said was "dad i think i got a red light ticket but i dont know for sure". About 3 weeks later he walks into my room and says hey your photos are here. Im sitting there going what photos? He said the ones that cost you a 100 dollars each and they sent you 4. That was the day i knew dont lie about tickets otherwise instead of being told dont do it again i would have gotten my ass kicked. Then i got one for tailgating which he was by me and laughed at me while the cop wrote me up. Pissed the cop off more. All he said then was you got a job now son, so pay it.

Should you be a second driver and/or not hold a policy with your current address, and your insurance is not currently aware you're going to school and living at XX address you run the risk of not being covered in the event of an accident.
I know it sounds crazy, but if you say hit a lawyer or total your car, your policy provider is going to try and find reason not to pay. Making false claims on your policy automatically cancels your policy. As stated in every policy.
