Go figure...complexity
I'd do it for $100 in labor and 19.95 per filter. But you have to bring it to my garage. Oil changes go for..... ummmm $75. Change air in tires to summer air - $35. Lubricate the muffler pulley - $45 plus parts.

Great DIY, wish I saw it before doing my regular service call at the dealer. They charged me about $200 plus they had my car the whole day.

Just to clarify...You're saying they charged you $200, took a whole day and all they did was change the cabin air filters?

My 02 TL has over 80,000 miles and I'm not sure if it still has the original cabin filter.
Could not replacing the cabin filter for long time cause air blowing so weak? Because my air does not blow strong enough.

to go back on? you turn it sideways and slip the tabs in the 2 slots for them, then use the screw to fasten it back in place

This DIY is awesome. Very well documented and seems very straight forward.

I just have a simply question. All the steps are clear to me expect the part where we need to take out the 2 plastic tabs. The instruction calls for a screw driver and a needle nose pliers. How exactly are the two used? I kindda played around with the clip and didn't want to apply to much force so that I don't snap anything. Does it require much force to take out the 2 tabs, or should it just come out easily if done correctly?

Thanks for clarifying!

Mine were hard to take out. I thought removing the tabs was toughest part of the whole replacement job, otherwise it's really quick and easy. I used the needlenoses to squeeze the tabs from the back and the screwdriver to pop it out from the front. They did not give up easily... maybe other folks had a better technique.

They're referring to the black plastic pieces, one on each side of the glove box, that prevent it from falling completely open, not the tabs that are on the plastic that covers the filters. And yes, they are hard to get out. I slipped a flexible putty knife under the plastic stop from inside the glove box and gently pried up then pushed with my finger from the outside.

A question. Why do they not make that cover a snap-on? Do dealerships just cut it off, too?

My guess is that it will be cheaper to manufacture just a one piece platic as oppose to multiple pieces.

I just did this in about 20 to 30 minutes. Great DIY. Why can't this be moved to the FAQs or start a DIY forum? It took me a while to search for this thread. I can't believe the amount of crap that was in there. I will never buy a car without a cabin air again.

hmmmm...this could be why my A/C is not so cold and not blowing so hard anymore...i've noticed this since feb 04

maybe a combo of air restriction by a 5year old filter and low on radeon gas thing...heaven save me if i have a leak!

GREAT DIY btw

Those that have changed out the filters can really appreciate the fresher air.
Thank you for the step-by-step DIY post on the Cabin filters. Much appreciated in helping TL owners/enthusiasts in understanding the vehicle.

Great post, but, what about the plastic piece that was cut out with the Dremel?
It is stated that is is needed but how does one use it since the tabs are cut and there
is nothing to afix it to?

Where are you guys buying the filters from in US? What is the brand & model #?

Any recommendations on brand/quality? How much do they cost at the dealer parts store? (I guess I could find it out too but if anyone knows on the top of their head)

with the filters out start teh car and turn the fan and system on and spray something like lysol (any deoderizer and sanitizer) in the filter opening it will halp kill funky smells for awhile. there is a cleaner that they make to spray in those systems also to help eliminate any mold and stuff that builds up due to moisture

This was a great thread. I usually hang on 3rd gen for my car - but the wife's car is a 2002 (bought in 2001) and I have never changed the filter - no smells or low air flow, but after almost 4 years of driving - its gotta be pretty dirty. Great thread guys - thanks! DIY'er 4 LIFE!

I agree, would Acura just cut it also, or am I missing something? Is there another way (possibly through the engine compartment like fatty's dad's caddy) to access the filter compartment?
