Go with the AV6 out of the 06-07 Accord V6 Coupe or Sedan. The Odyssey transmission isn't the same...

Really? I read in other threads the 05-06 Odyssey transmission was essentially the same as the 06-07 Accord V6. Accord trannies are around $1200 in my area with ~150k, and I can get the Oddy trans for about $750. Are you certain?

Paul here in NJ completed my AV6 swap into my 02TLs and I picked it up today. The donor Trans has 68k miles and the shifts are so positive and smooth. He did a great thorough job so kudos to him

Hello everyone. New member here. I just got a 03 TL about a month ago. This thing has started to stall a bit. Twice when making a complete stop. Took it to the dealer and they pointed out several little things. The biggest one being the tranny that now needs to be replaced. They wanna charge me 8 grand which is completely absurd. So I was doing some research of what my other options are and come across this. To everyone that has done this method...how successful did this project turn out? I wanna get at least 2-3 years out of this. How did you go about getting a good AV6 tranny? I don't really have to time, knowledge, or resources to do this myself so...has anyone had this job done at a shop? I live in Silver Spring, a suburb in DC if that helps. I kind of need to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks!

Find a reputable shop, show them the process on this thread, get them to source one for you from an auto wrecker (websites like car-part.com).

Yes I'd second that. A quick search on car-part and you should be able to source an 06/07 accord v6 trans (non hybrid). I'd try and find one with lower miles and a reasonable price. Too bad you are not a bit further north as I just had Paul an Acura tech in north NJ do my swap last week. The car runs better than it ever has in the last 3.5 yrs/50K miles I have owned it. I would start by looking up Honda/Acura specialist shops in your area first and explain the process a bit to them. At first most shops are leary of trying anything out of the norm but you may hopefully find a shop willing to do it. There is not too much in the way of custom work to be done

I just did a quick search on car-part around your area and there are currently a few trans available at yards around Baltimore with decent mileage. One for $1k with 76k miles and another with 56k miles for $1200. And yet another with 116k miles for $750

Nice man congrats! I will look into that. How much did you pay for the tranny and labor?

First, I would like to thank NVA-AV6 (Paul) for the info posted so long ago that made this swap a reality beyond theory.

History:

I first found out about this swap here on Acurazine a couple years ago. At the time there was not as much information on here as there is now, so it took quite a bit of research to dig up the information I needed to equip myself with to do this job. However, I did manage to find everything needed, and realized, this only sounds more intimidating than it really is!

So I bit the bullet and got everything I needed to do it, as the 03 TL I 'just bought' had a blown trans, and I wanted it fixed RIGHT!

I did the swap, and it worked perfectly!

I've been getting alot of questions over the last couple years on how to do this job, and over the last couple years I have done 6 swaps for people, all of which were successful!

And now, on to the info!

REQUIREMENTS

First, this only bolts on to a 00-03 TL, the 99 has a 4 speed trans and totally different wiring harnesses and ECU. *IF* you wanted it to work on a 99, you would have to change out the engine/trans wiring harnesses, dashboard harnesses and ECU..... At that point you may as well swap in a 6mt for negligibly more $$$.

Second, The AV6 trans you will need to source is from the 06-07 v6 3.0 Accord, coupe or sedan does not matter, just make REAL sure the trans is a 5at from a 3.0 v6!

Third, get everything you need for the swap in advance! It makes it alot less brutal when you don't have to source a part or gasket in the middle of the job!

Now, let's get to what needs to be done!
Oh, and I am going to assume you know how to take a trans out and put one in, because THAT is a whole other FAQ!

Items needed to 'swap'!

FIRST The trans harness from the AV6 trans will not work, it has a different connector to tie into the engine harness, you have to use the one from the TL - this harness connects to the trans temp sensor and clutch pressure switch.

AV6 Diagram:

^...#17 is what needs to come off the AV6 trans---^

TL Diagram:

^...#16 is what you need to keep and swap to the AV6 trans in place of #17 in the AV6 diagram.---^

SECOND The oil warmer on the top of the AV6 trans is not the same as the TL, it has different size coolant hoses than the TL, and they are pointed in the wrong directions for a 'bolt on' replacement. It is much easier to simply take the assembly off the TL trans and transplant it to the AV6 trans.

Don't let this part hinder your efforts, they both interchange perfectly without any modifications! Make sure to clean the gasket off very carefully, as putting trash into fluid passages is BAD!

*** This is the 'hardest' part of this swap, and it's not hard! ***

AV6 Diagrams:

^...In this diagram it shows the ATF warmer (#1), filter assembly, and lines (#'s 11, 7, 22, 21, 10, 24, 12, 15, 26, 20, 6, 13, 14)- remove these from the AV6 trans.---^

^...In this diagram is the assembly the ATF warmer bolts to (#'s 6, 22, 10, 21, 9, 23, 24) - remove these from the AV6 trans.---^

TL Diagrams:

^...In this diagram it shows the ATF warmer (#1), filter (#9 - Buy a new one!!!!) and lines (12, 13), remove these from the TL trans, clean them out REAL GOOD, and save to install on the AV6 trans - now, chances are, you have an oil jet kit installed in place of the direct line from the filter to the back of the trans - that's okay! Just cut the oil jet kit out of the lines, flare the cut lines and install a hose in it's place between the 2 cut lines, just make sure your hose is long enough to make it all the way around - just eyeball it based on the original length of the line. Either that or just buy the new lines without the oil jet kit in-between.

^...In this diagram is the passage body (#'s 23 ,24, 25-(Buy this gasket new!!!), 26, 27, 28, 29) the ATF warmer and filter bolt on - remove this and save to install on the AV6 trans.---^

THIRD The trans range switch from the AV6 trans will not work, it has a different connector than the TL range switch - take the one off the TL trans, and install it on the AV6 trans.

AV6 Diagram:

^...In this diagram #'s 5, 27, and 28 need to come off the AV6 trans...^

TL Diagram:

^...In this diagram #'s 5 and 25 need to come off the TL trans and be installed on the AV6 trans - It does need to be adjusted to read the gears correctly, do this after the job is mostly done and the car can be turned on, key on-engine off....^

FOURTH - For TL-p only! You will need to loop the lines coming off the rack going to the power steering assist assembly on the TL trans, the AV6 trans does not have the hole in it for the sensor.

TL Diagram:

# 16 is the sensor assembly - cut the lines off the sensor and install a 2-way barb fitting between the lines with clamps, or take the lines off the rack and install 1 line looped...^

Here's a pic of what it'll look like looped on the rack

ALWAYS REMEMBER! NEVER REUSE YOUR OLD TL TORQUE CONVERTER!

ALWAYS use the AV6 torque converter that was supplied with the trans, or buy a new one!

That's it! Nothing more to it, direct bolt-on, little to no modification, just a bit of parts swapping between the two transmissions!
Appreciate the step by step, however I found only two photos would load and the link in text to be inoperative. Anyone else have this occur?

Same here. We shoudl get those pics working because a LOT of people depend on it to keep their TLs going.

Mine is going to need the AV6 within about a year unfortunately. OR an MT6

Hey guys! KJ here:

I'm new to the site but have read through most of this thread already. I am in the process of sourcing a good 06 AV6 trans for my 01 TL that decided to die on me (she just couldn't help herself lol). I just bought her a couple weeks before Thanksgiving after talking the previous owner down from $3000 to $2000 by mentioning this exact issue. She has ~155k miles on her and even survived a round trip from VA to ATL with no issues during the holidays. I changed the trans fluid before the trip (didn't trust that it was done on time by previous owners) and an oil change after the trip but low and behold, she now misses shifting between first and second and I've now lost reverse completely. She is currently parked in my dads garage until I have the funds necessary to complete the swap. I have seen a few good donor options on car-part but I have yet to find a shop that I am comfortable will giving my hard earned money to.

I called around and found a local mom/pop style garage with decent reviews that was willing to complete the swap for $800 labor. My hesitation is the language barrier. I am unsure of exactly what he will be including in the $800 (fluids, new gaskets, etc) as well as his ability to read the instructions provided. Based on the posts in this forum, $800 is about the right price but I don't want spotty work or to be surprised by a large bill of add-ons later. I was wondering if there are any members who have completed this swap in the DC Metro area that can recommend a good shop. Push to shove, I will just use google to translate the instructions to his language and ask the appropriate questions. But if anyone knows a person around that is familiar with this swap, or can communicate better...or even complete the swap cheaper then I'd be truly grateful.

Thanks!!

As an update, I've got about 400 miles on the TL with the AV6 swap done. The car shifts nice and smooth. Even has a bit of pep to it. I found a transmission for about $770 delivered to the shop that did it for me. Labor was about $1000. There are shops that will do it cheaper, but I went with a Honda/Acura specialty shop to make sure it was being done by people familiar with the tranny and the car.

Acura Trans vs AV6 Pros&Cons

I've read in a few build threads some of the reviews about the Accord transmission and an improvement it gave in torque, gear ratio and gas mileage. If ones swapping in the av6 into a TL-P there will be quite a large difference in the range of gears. But that the type s has similar gear ratios as the Av6. I read in one thread that the torque was improved. 4th and 5th gear shift sooner and make going up hills or needing added power easier. Because of 4th and 5th geared better, gas mileage for higher speeds has improved slightly.

I was reading in this thread and didn't see any pro's and con's to each. Tried searching for the original threads I read the info in but the swap is so common now it's hard to find those exact posts I was reading a year ago. One person had posted the exact ratios of each side by side which helped show the improvement.

There's a guy on Facebook dogging the av6 swap saying there's no real benefits between the two and he's going to go for the CL 6 spd. Responded about the added torque, improved gas mileage in 4th and 5th gear, more power in 4th and 5th for hills and the value alone is worth it! Considering a rebuild is $12-1800 and the transmission with labor can be as little as $900 or buying one with lower miles $12-1300. Labor at the shops in So OR run $450 for install.

Can someone post a sticky with the benefits and facts on each trans? Then I can post the link when ones have questions.
Thanks

The AV6 has the Type-S gear ratios so if you had the Premium model you'll notice a difference in the range of gears. But that's all I know.

@nobletl- all I can say is i just had the swap done in my 02 type S and have about 1500 miles on it. It definitely feels more torquey and more responsive. Shifts are positive.

Multiple posts in this thread used the 05 06 odyssey tranny. Gearing is a little shorter in 4th and 5th also posted on this thread on page three.
I ordered a 06 odyssey tranny myself. Goes in starting this weekend.

Part of the AV6 Club as of Today...

My concerns were:
1.- Does the trans even work at all? Since its used.
2.- Does the smaller TQ matter? Because the OD is smaller than the one in the TL.

My first impressions are:
1.- SCREW ALL THAT SHIT! The BAYA transmission shift stupid fast... I mean not kidding but I think is almost twice as fast in shifting than a fully working B7WA. Also the TQ Engages so fast you cant even feel it.. Shift into 5th at low input and the TQ engages almost instantaneously.

What I think is the only con is the jarring feel of the shifts at low speed. I think the Engine Mounts make it worse (Poly Filled) If I try to drive at very low speed the shifts are there, Noticeable since they happen so fast there is little to no slippage for the trans to shift in a luxurious smooth way like it did with the B7WA. This contrast heavily with my MDX that It can shift so smoothly sometimes I don't even know what gear I am In..

The AV6 does not allow that and thus the drive quality seemed to suffer a little bit. But cant have it all I guess.. At least it shifts into third and also puts a huge smile on my face with those insanely fast shifts.

Awesome Skirmish! Same feel with mine- shifts are quick and positive. I have standard mounts so the shifts aren't harsh. Feel faster too?

I noticed that too about the low speed shifting after I did the swap, but with pretty new OEM mounts all around on my car, it's not something that I would consider harsh. The speed with which this transmission shifts more than makes up for it.

So I drove about 60 miles today to feel the new trans.. I am pretty sure now to say its indeed faster, I don't know by how much but once I get new tires Ill hit the strip to confirm it..

Its very noticeable in Full D5 where it completely removed the lag and numbness of the B7WA, Its even FUN on full auto which is the maximum compliment.

You change the Range Switch entirely that includes the harness so it will be the TL Trans Range switch and harness on the AV6. That is the only thing you need to swap electric wise. The TL harness will plug on every solenoid and sensor on the AV6 with no mods.

You may need to cut a bit of plastic on the protective cover that you take off of your old transmission. make sure to put it on though.
the range switch bolts up perfectly though

if your gear indicator lights dont work correctly there is a procedure to calibrate it in the service manual

Thank-you so much you guys, I've spent time learning lots about this AV6 swap and will get it done in a couple of weeks. Can anybody suggest a shop in the Seattle or Everett, WA area that they have used to do this transmission swap? If you could, can you provide labor charges? Thanks!

just finished swapping in a 06 oddy EX tranny - got mine off car-part.com for $775 shipped core included - since shipping was $125 to me and the core charge was originally $250. he gave me a break on the core for $125 as it would cost more to return it than the core.

mine has the trans cooler lines with no heater. bought a new Hayden stacked plate cooler and installed it. Live in California so not worried about freezing as the radiator is now totally bypassed.
will be adding a MagnaFine inline cooler next week for more protection.

I swapped the wiring harness but left the CL-S range selector.
mine came with no wire cover had to order a new one
which meant I had to adjust the shifter by 1/4 pretty easy when you follow the service manual instructions.

shifts really well ! can actually feel TQ lock in at low speeds.
I still have a p0132 O2 sensor code that I need to take care of as that is throwing off the VSA.

will update in a week or so. Right now pretty happy.

I am still wondering if the Oddy trans has different ratios though?

the ratios are like page 4 - they were about the same as a cl-s or tl-s

so I dont notice the gearing as much as more power being put to the ground is the best way to describe it. I really think the Torque converter is more efficient. Basically the motor does not have to spin as much to make it go.

a fascinating test would be to look up the efficiency ratings for a 06 oddy torque converter and compare to a 2000 tl-p or 2000 cl-s

also the tranny seems to switch quicker between gears. which is also more power to wheels.

Yeah I think the same about the converter..
The difference must be even sharper in the lighter CL, The shifts are hella quick and the acceleration feels greatly improved.

I need to do a new dyno with the AV6..
My former best was 253whp but I need tires, Since I bought my MDX I have let the TL fall down in my priority list.

Been a week and it shifts pretty good. Power is so smooth it's almost not noticeable. That is untill I go drive my tl that I just put the cl trans in. The tl is just that much more frantic.
My av6 is getting its 2nd 3x trans fill with redline d4

Hi -

Can anyone enlighten mo on the part on the FAQ instruction where it says that I needed to cut the oil jet kit line that is directly feed through the filter line, then swapping the said line to the AV6...

What hose or connector do I need?

If you don't want to do any modifications to the oil jet kit, you can simply swap the whole thing over to the AV6 and it will work just fine on it.

If you choose to get rid of the oil jet kit, you have two options. You can either buy the original style pipe/rubber hose combo from Acura and use that instead of the oil jet kit. Otherwise, you can cut the rubber hose between the tee in the line going to the filter and the oil jet and use a plug and hose clamp to cap off the hose.
