you can reuse the stock metel intake manifold gasket, but you will need a new throttle body gasket if you take off the throttle body( if you dont make sure you remove all the sensors as not to screw them up)

Did you use a 8mm drill bit at all like Acura Service Bulletin suggestion or Did you just use 3 can of carburetor cleaner?
Did you even do #7-15
Acura Service: EGR Port Clogging

I'm doing this after I get my ThermoBlaock Spacer? I'm glad you have 99 like me

Great D.I.Y. write an pix

You are supposed to use that drill if you are going to put in that little sleeve that they made so the EGR port will not clog as easy. If you are just cleaning the EGR port and not putting that little sleeve in place, you do not need to do that (I think).

I forgot to ask something. It says something about plugging up the lines that you disconnect to minimize coolant loss. What are you using to plug up the lines?? I have a bunch of extra antifreeze from when I was doing my intake and lost a bunch of fluid, so I don't think it will really matter if I lose some fluid, b/c I can just top it off with the new fluid.

i just used 2 of the old bolts from the TB to temp plug it, fit fine. if you dont plug it the hose will be in the way and youll prolly get a decent amount of coolant on you, its more to keep things clean.

Just did them to day with the help of my roommate. You weren't kidding, that stock gasket was hard to get off the IM. In one of the beginning steps, you said to use 14mm socket to get off the bolts from the top of the IM, but they are 12mm. Just thought you should know so maybe a mod can change that in the first post. Also, you have to adjust the throttle cables to adjust the slack since the TB is now closer to the driver's side.

BUMP- for those installing Thermoblock-
great DIY
Great product
About the best bang for 100 bucks you can do for the TL
thermoblock adds about 8hp across the board and 11 ft lbs torque

Ask me about using Honda Legend dual piston calipers to slow down the car!!

Debating on whether or not to do it myself... or take it to a shop... I'll have to see how much they want to install it. I'd pay ~$75.

Its no big deal to do- takes about 1.5 hours and you clean the EGR ports while in there.

Just try to do it yourself. I never removed an intake manifold in my life and I did it. The only very important thing is to not overtighten. You don't need much torque with the aluminum.

The only things I had done to my car were basic bolt-ons (headers, intake, stereo, etc.) and this was very easy with the instructions included with the kit and the ones on here. Just have a buddy with you and take your time, labeling all the hoses as you disconnect them, and as phipark said, make sure you tighten everything down to what it is supposed to be (it says here and instructions included).

A torque wrench accurate at 16 lbs is the right tool for the job here.

I just got done doing this myself. Seriously easy DIY. The hardest part is getting that damn gasket off the manifold. I probably spent just as much time doin that as I did with the disassembly and reassembly combined.

Acura Garage (Apple Tree) wanted $557.00 To clean the EGR. I did it in 2 hours for $11 worth of throttle body cleaner and my time. Can you believe they wanted to rip me off for that much $$$$.

You might want to go speak with the Service MANAGER and ask exactly what they looked up for repair time estimate. Then mention you are available for a job- since you are twice as fast as the book time or service writers imagination of time needed.

Yea, The Acura TSB states 1.5 hrs labor for cleaning a 99TL and that includes drilling out part of the EGR passage to increase the diameter. I would ask some question.

Maybe the quoted price was for cleaning it and putting in the new little slip in place so it doesn't clog any more. Either way, that is an outrageous price.

can you send me all of those pics at sharroll@yahoo.com, I have to replace some ignition coils, and the associate at Advanced Auto told me to clean the EGR valve with brake cleaner instead of spending $200+ on a new one, and I was reading one of the threads and it said you shouldn't have to clean the egr valve, because if it's that clogged up, you should replace it!

Chances are your EGR PORT inside the intake manifold is plugged- not the EGR VALVE itself
the valve works or it dont~
If you look at the pics in this thread you can see it and why it gets dirty.

Why are you replacing ~some~ ignition coils

guess im the only dumb fu*k that messed up, now disassembled all fine wasnt installing the thermo block just cleaning the egr out. now my vsa light and triangle vsa have been on for about two weeks so i thought it may have something to do with this.

anyway i cleaned out the IM and TB with degresser first to clean the gunk that was built up then with seafom tb cleaner

let it sit for about an hr, (finished up my stereo problem (another thread another day)) then reinstalled. went to start..... nothing it tried to turn over then started coughin kinda. said ok stopped tried again
gave it a lil gas and it started but rough. then i waited thinkin maybe something was still wet on the inside.

tried about an hr later still actin up

checked all connections 3 times disconnected and reconnected. my back hurts
any suggestions .?

Did you try just letting it run? You may just neet to let it run rough for a bit and the idle may clear up after all the chemicals you used clear out. Check the labels on all the chemicals you used and make sure they are for fuel injected engines. Some Carburated only engine cleaners will damage sensors. The ECM needs to relearn the idle and basic engine perameters for 10 minutes after the battery has been unplugged for a while but it shouldnt be that rough.

read the owner manual on resetting ECU before smog check- it takes more than a few minutes idle to reset the system.

can you reset the ecu without having to enter in the security codes for the radio and navi?

the radio code needs reset any time battery disconnected- nav gives extra time disconnected before it locks down

To answer your question- to reset the ECU wuthout taking off neg battery cable:
Fuse #8 the CLOCK BACKUP fuse, not the regular clock fuse,
thats the power source for the ecu- pull that fuse and reinsert- I think its on the passenger side fuse panel

What do you guys use to plug the coolant lines? Would a cottonball work or is that a bad idea? Twist ties?

Yea you want the coolant flowing through there when it is cold. Not sure about what temperatures it is needed for, though.
