not really, its only 4 LEDs. I just layed the Sand paper on the surface, and took the LED with my fingers and just started going back and forth with some force, the LEDs are very strong.

Do you even HAVE to shave them down? whats the point of shaving them?..never thought about just putting them in full.

Shaving the LEDs flat disperses the light at a wider angle, thus making it brighter. If you leave the top rounded you are really creating a pinpoint of light. I think flat the angle is 100 degree spread of light, versus like 20 or 30 degress if left round.

No, you do not have to shave them, it just makes them brighter. Which for this application isn't as critical as shaving them down for the dash, but it still helps to shave them.

i just started doing this earlier tonight. i got them all wired up and ready to go and when i started to run the wires through the handles, they wouldn't fit.

i used some 16 ga wire i had sitting around instead of the recommended 20 ga.

the wire was too thick and i really had to force it through. then, when i opened my door, the handle just stuck out because it was getting caught on the wire. gonna go to get some 20 ga tomorrow and just cut down the wires to the shrink tube and make the rest of the wire 20 ga so the handle will be free to move.

Also make sure that the wires inside the door are not in the windows way. I didn't check my front windows and when a friend put them down, the window cut the wire. Just take your time.

so just make the wires in the door long enough to go under the window when it is all the way down?

No, all you have to do is follow the metal rod that connects to the door handle... when you take your door panel off, you'll see the window track. All you have to do is pass the wires behind the track.

Once you put the wires in the door handle..just follow the 2 metal rods that you see in pic above.

for anyone who hasn't done this yet, i also found that it was easier to get the wire through the rubber boot, by pulling out the entire boot from both sides and then passing the wire through. After that is done you can just put the boot back. The wires end up behind the little foam piece where the seat belts are anchored. So peel that back a bit and feel around. That's how i got it to pass through. I also used a zip tie to snake through the rubber boot, but that wasn't necessary.

awesome diy calichris. you the man

quick question for everyone about LEDs in general... does it matter which way you put the resistor? there is no kind of marking on them.. is there a positive/negative side or can it go any way??

it can go anyway. But the resistor must be attached to the postive end of the led.

Hmm....my battery did die out on me..all I had to do was give a quick jump-start. (the kits you plug into the wall outlet) There shouldn't be any reason why you would blow a fuse for the starter, the DIY tells you what fuse to tap into. When you do get your battery charged, next time you are going to be testing or adding more leds, disconnect your battery, so you won't blow any fuses. Good Luck

How about checking some of the other fuses, only way to know if YOU blew a fuse is for you to check its possible you tapped into the wrong one but its unlikely that it would cause the car to not start.. Or maybe a just try a jump start to see if it helps.

i wasn't asking people to come pull my fuses, i was just wondering if someone had an idea on where to start.

i checked all the fuses in the driver's side kick panel and all of the small ones under the hood. none of them seem to be blown.

i don't see what happened. i tapped into the correct fuse and even did that with them unplugged from the harness. tried to jump start, but it didn't work. i couldn't have fried the starter or something could i? i just got a new one too

I doubt you fried your starter... Try jump starting it, might help...did you check the fuses on the passenger side?

I wasnt implying to have some one come help pull your fuses.

Did you check the other fuse panel on the Passenger side dash? You didnt blow your starter. Is there just no cranking at all ?

It cranks, and for as long as I hold the key, it makes the ttttttt noise like it's trying to start. Not just that one click like when your battery's dead. It just never makes a spark I guess. I recently installed NGK Iridiums but they have been fine until I started this mod

I tried jumping it several times with my roommate's 4Runner, but nothing. I am going to check the passenger side in a few, I just wouldn't think that any of those would cause the car to not start after reading the panel to see which ones were in there.

I ALSO doubt that the LED mod killed your car. I think you are getting a lil to ahead of yourself with the spark plugs. Like i said before, when I did my Door LED's, my battery did die. However all I had to do was just charge it a lil, for a few minutes, maybe you need to give it a lil more time charging with your friends 4Runner.

You follow the LED DIY to the T?

Yea, I have a laptop so I just had it sitting there on the table when I was soldering and then took it out there with me to my carport. Maybe I will charge it for some more, but it doesn't sound like it is dead, since everything else works.

hmm...well try disconnecting the LEDS, everything was working fine untill you started with the mod. So disconnect the LEDS and re-trace your steps. If the car still doesn't work, then I would start to worry.

When i did this mod, at the same time with the door sills, i unhooked the battery so it wouldn't drain while i was doing everything, and to prevent accidentally shorting the car. Hopefully it's just the battery.. Goodluck and hope everything works out.

P.S. I am assuming you had to unplug the 3 harnesses on the driverside, did you push them in all the way and make sure they are in tight?

i only had to unplug two of the harnesses. maybe i did tap into the wrong ones. they were the right color wires and it looked the same as it did in the picture. when i unplug the harness that i have the wires tapped into, my inside courtesy door lights go out, so im pretty sure i have the right harness. maybe i'll go back over the DIY and see what happened. not til later though, gotta study for finals.

i don't think that tapping the wrong wires would prevent your car from starting but who knows. Make sure you didnt short anything, its easy to have the wires accidentally touch each other. But to be sure i would just disconnect all the new wiring you just put in. Also what kind of taps did you use?

i tried just using the (=====) connector where you put in wires from each side and press down on them with pliers, but you have little room to work with around the plugs, so they started to slip out. i ended up soldering the rest, and fixing the ones that were coming lose with soldering. so, it is going to be kind of hard to undo all the wiring if i want to redo it because when i cut the wire, i am going to have even less room to work with when hooking everything back up.

i will keep everyone updated as to what i did and what to look out for during your install

you need to get the correct size taps. Get the taps for a bigger wire guage. They ran out of 18-22 guage taps at radio shack so i had to use 16-14 which sucked. I had to cut some insulation off before tapping the wire to make contact. goodluck to you though.
