What year RL is good to buy?

Hi AZ, I'm looking to move on to my next project from my 08 TL Type S, 1 of the cars on my list to get is a 05+ RL, I decided to start doing HW on all the cars on my list as of now so when the time comes when I let go of the TL I would already know what car to start looking for. I would like to get a fully loaded RL so if there is any tips & info that can help me I would really appretiate.

Previous owner of TL here. When I researched, I found that 05 has a few issues, which were mostly ironed out by 06. I looked for 06 RLs and found one by luck.

My notes from TL to RL? Mods are fewer and more expensive. Parts in general are more expensive. A LOT more features in the RL though. It's super comfy, has all these things well thought out and it's a great daily driver. Good luck!

What's your budget? So I can personally recommend an RL.

They are all great cars, best bet is to have receipts that document work, especially for an 05/06. I love my 05. 05s can be had for around 10-12k with as little as 80-100k miles, not even half the expected engine life if cared for. An 06, around 14k, there one near me with only 37k miles.

I personally think the 2011's look fantastic. But those are going to be pricey.

Avoid the '05 RL. I had one and it developed a lot of annoying issues.

Definitely no USB till 09+

I'd say 07-08, try to find one with the tech package.

Major issues to watch out for: battery issues, BT module issues, passenger door handle sensor issues.

If the BT doesn't work chances are it will give you battery issues.

If the sensor on the passenger door doesn't unlock and lock the car with a swipe of your hand that could also lead to battery issues.

Other than that, from the research I've done and my initial impression of having an RL (08-aspec w/tech and CMBS) they are pretty solid cars and don't have many issues. But modding the car leaves you with a few expensive options to choose from compared to most other cars.

Also, I would recommend getting one with the factory back-up cam. They don't make the OEM shroud that the OEM camera goes into so adding it on later looks aftermarket IMO.

Good job on doing your HW

Thank you for the info, I love my music & I would love just to plug in a iPod instead of cds

I was thinking the 1st year might have a few bugs, but 1 of my main concern I guess is the motor, tranny & electric.
I know the TL & RL are far apart from each other especially with all the extra features not including the size, I'm sure the TL is alittle bit more sportier then the RL and RL is alittle more Luxury then the TL, but I defenite want the more room since Im tall & I love having leg room. As for mods I will be good with the oem lip kit for now lol

I honestly found a 05 1 owner fully loaded, lip kit, shades, the chrome oem wheels, 70k for 10kobo, I am debating on this, I like the fact that its 1 owner & under 100k

thanks on the info, sounds like the bt is a common issue with Acura, my cousin had issues with his bt on his 08 TSX my other cousin with his 07 TL

well I still have time to do more hw and search around, but unless the 05 i mention earlier is a good deal I would go pick it up asap and leave it park & do all the needed maintenance till I get rid of the TL

Under 10k for an 05 with 70k miles is a good deal only if bug fixes have been done, and there are quite a few. AC, prop shaft, torque converter, AFS system, door handles, etc. there are also a few recalls, a good owner would have taken care of those. Under 10k is good, but you could double that if these issues haven't been addressed. Not every car will have these issues and later years also had some recurring issues, but 50-70k is where they all showed up on my car, and were fixed under warranty. That's why I think a car with more mileage may actually be better unless receipts exist.

I have 100k miles, and since about 70k, I've had virtually no issues and it's been very reliable. I cannot see getting rid of my car, it's too good in almost every way.

The '07 Tech was the first trim with an AUX port. The '09 was the first with USB and BT audio streaming. If you like your iDevice, you'll need a mod for the other years/trims.

I would say buy a higher mileage 2011 Adv., 2012s can be hard to find. At that point you'd get all the features and comfort and not the hard to use Dual Screens in the RLX. The price should be in the higher 20s, the RL will be problem free.

Things worth mentioning about 11 and 12 RL adv.:

-Real wood
-Power Folding Mirrors
-CMBS
-ACC
-Newer shifter and center console compared to 2008 counterparts
-Very different exterior look than KB1(More classy and modern in my opinion)
-Very reliable(mine has been problem free)
-6 Speed Transmission(Good God, it's better than the 5 speed)
-3.5 vs 3.7(0-60 5.9/6.0 sec)
-Real-Time Traffic
-Bluetooth Audio, Aux, iPod/ USB
-Door pull pockets
-Suede like headliner
-10-way adjustable power front driver and passanger seats(KB1 had 8-way passanger)
-Power Fold headrests
-Sunshades
-New grille(love it or hate it)
-Re designed rear end
-New rocker panels
-Almost 3" longer(KB1 vs. KB2)

Simple... if you want a KB1, then buy the 06-07 and with the fewest miles if you can. Take my word for it or anyone on this forum. I traded a 04 up to a 07 and the differences are so numerous that I will not type it all out. You will not regret it.

also....

Install the rear swaybar from the KB2.... it is a cheap mod that will net you an ass that will not wag under cornering like Daisy-the-Happy Golden Retriever, when she is happy and her tail is in full boggie and her hips sway in counter stroke with her tail.

He means 07-08, unless you live in Japan.

thanks guys on all the latest info, however I am having 2nd thoughts, I have a 08 TL Type S and going to a 05 RL even though its a bigger car & 1 of a few cars that I always wanted, I feel like I am downgrading, so I think I will look into 08+ unless I can find a older RL selling at a price that sounds reasonable, what you guys think??

Sounds to me that you have a personal dilemma, unless your TL/type S is a manual.... no way are you down grading..... I drove a UA6 TL-S and my first impression was that the torque steer of the the UA6 sucks... I would never own one for this reason. Do not get me wrong... I love the aesthetics and I almost replaced my KA9 for one back in California, but as it stands they do not offer the UA6 in Japan as an import that is built in Ohio...

Back to the RL, the KB1 and the SH-AWD is simply what this car is about and though the weight difference is very significant, with the correct suspension tuning and tire choice, will turn a sleeping porker into carving knife that will slice high speed sweepers like a scalpel. How many Honda automobiles are built with carbon fiber propeller shafts? No FWD limits here.... LOL.

I have even witnessed a JDM CL7 Euro R, which is the TSX with the type R engine and 6-speed, get into a non recoverable moment. Imagine a 80MPH banked sweeper and we are side by side with me in my JDM Lancer Evolution 7, we are scrappin-fun and he is on the outside as he lifts throttle to scrub speed exactly at the apex of the sweeper.... The weight transfer is just enough to exceeded his mechanical grip as the car washes the rear into a non recoverable FWD high speed yaw moment. I watched that car get totaled as it careened into the inside and slide backwards to a halt.

On another personal note, I went against a W204 Mercedes Benz C63 the other evening and I ate him alive through the stutter switchback of the Tokyo expressway.... his C63 traction control truncates the fun out of the driving experience whilst my trusty SH-AWD made it easy as childs play! Glory!

^So true!

The RL is a whole nother beast dude. Like I said before I wouldn't get an 05 or 06 simply because they will have higher mileage and are more likely to have issues. I went from a 03 CL-S with 6-speed and navi to my RL and I feel like I won the lottery.

Don't worry about if it will feel like you've downgraded (because it won't) worry about how you will upgrade next because other than a NSX honda tops out at the RL.

I basically went from an 03 CL-S 6 speed to an 07 RL with driving a jeep srt8 for a year in between. Similar taste in cars.

Very similar! I wanted my RL in white and I really want the CV7 wheels... scary similar if you ask me. Also the SRT8 Jeep is BA and I would have driven one for sure haha.

I haven't heard anything great about it other than a few tech improvements and styling differences over the 2nd gen RL. If they ever release the RLX-SHAWD then sure, but still not really an upgrade, more of a lateral movement to something newer.

well yes my 08 Type S is 6spd manual, I love how it drives & I love the steering, Today I drove my cousin 07 base TL UA6 Auto, I was not a fan of the steering feels to loose, the brakes feels weak & the pick up is extremly slow, I wish I can compare it to a Auto Type S or a 6spd base TL. I know the RL comes with the same 3.5 motor, but I am assuming the RL has to be slightly heavier then the TL.

The NSX was on my list as well but I notice lately I see a few nsx at the car shows/events/meet, I feel that the RL is still a rare car to find in the street

The Hybrid RLX should come with SH-SH-AWD, not P-AWS.

[QUOTE=princelybug;15181021]What year RL do you have?

My KB1 is a JDM 2007, Final Edition Legend Exclusive Package. It has everything except the CMBS and the night vision option and for JDM only, a sunroof delete.

My JDM only ECU has been tagged Revision IV, which allows linear locking converter control and will shift into second around 4000 RPM from first gear with 25 percent throttle, I believe this is the same spec as offered in the 5 speed KB2 USDM. My 2007 JDM car will not exhibit the weird speedo/tachometer hunting that some complain of, but my 2004 JDM KB1 did this... The only explanation that is feasible for this phenomenon may be attributed to the ECU locking the electronically controlled torque converter. I am only a certified Honda Powersports Technician, not a Acura auto tech, and this strange symptom appeared on numerous Honda Fourtrax quads with Electronic Shift Program and there was a TSB addressing this issue.. This was simply Honda managements way to make a product give the illusion of power without the need to over-rev, and this philosophy may have bled to other Honda products as well. The real difference in my JDM Final Edition Legend is that the demeanor has been shifted from a relaxed luxury car to that of a 4 door sports platform. The rack and pinion is different than my early car, the transmission gear ratio is altered to a close ratio in all spreads. In all descriptions this is the KB1 precursor to the USDM KB2 5-speed...ask Ionafuji, and he will expand upon this better for he owns a VERY nice one.

Finally, my car has instant call, paddle shift access, in D mode, which is one other reason I sold my 2004 Legend.

Fuck yeah ! I love this car.... do ya think?

check out this build thread for more info.... The key here is to calculate offset for natural camber... Based on your avatar, you want a 60mm drop and the magic off set number will be 40ET to 25ET on a 9.5 width wheel..with rear fenders rolled.... and yes, mine is a Legend.

Nice car. For what it is worth I bought a 06 RL 15 months ago and have put 13K miles on it (now has 119K). I really like the car. It rides well and is very comfortable. I have had no issues with it. I did the timing belt etc service myself and it was time consuming but doable for the mechanically inclined. I am very satisfied.
