Transmission...D vs S

Admittedly, I haven't driven it much since it's my DWs car but, I took it around the block for GAS and I was wondering the advantages of driving in S mode?
Is MPG severely effected? Does it ultimately put adverse wear on the transmission?

For the 2009+ RL, the transmission changed in a few ways. The knob sport shift was removed, the shift timing was reduced, and the paddle shifters became available at all times. In "D", you can use the paddles to do a quick downshift to accelerate, or try to force an upshift if you feel the car isn't cooperating. However, the car is still in "automatic" mode and will shift on its own at factory programmed RPMs (depending on throttle). In "S", the car behaves the same as the 2005-2008 in "Manual" mode. In these modes, the car will rely on the driver to change gears, and it will only shift automatically at the upper and lower extremes of the gear range.

It has no adverse affect on the transmission. Any affect on MPG will be due to the driver making all (or most) shifts versus the ECU. You can use this mode to force a start from 2nd gear in icy conditions, force the car to remain in a low gear for heavy traffic, or for general hooning excitement.

One correction to that, assuming the RL's transmission operates like the 12+ TL's transmission, the car will still shift on its own if you don't touch the paddle shifters when in "S" mode. It will hang gears longer and will not go above 3rd gear unless you are at higher speeds. Once you've engaged the paddle shifters while in "S" mode though, it's all on the driver to do the shifting until you put it back into "D".
