E-007: Painted Grill Examples

Ive been looking at the front end of our car and I think it would look great to paint the chrome hood end and lower portion of the grill to match the car color.

The only thing that might look strange is the bump that would be created by those portions not being flush to the hood / bumper. It would look especially good on black IMO with the lines of the headlights and the grill bars.

Anyone done this?

Thanks!

I've seen the grill itself painted and it looks good. Never seen the chrome part painted though. Although I've had an idea in my head for a while now of painting all the chrome trim on my car black chrome. I think that will look sharp especially on my black car.

How many people do you think bought an RL and how many would ever think of modifying anything on it?

OP, there is a guy who did exactly what you described, but I cannot find his pic. He had a PFM/CSM. I found all of those pics on a different day searching for his car after a noob asked about painting trim pieces

Cant wait. I'm surprised and happy about the limited amount of folks modifying this car in any way. Will make mine one of a kind.

I don't see this type of mod as rice at all. It could be done tastefully.

I know you're not insinuating I'm a noob at car modifications.

Also, to your comment about how many were sold and how many were modified. Very few. I understand why the depreciation of this car is so severe in just under 6 years, the TL cannibalized the sales of the flagship because Acura over equipped it. This is precisely why I practically stole this one from the original owner with 50K miles on it. I guess I under estimated the number of creative car tuners interested in this market. That I agree with you on.

Thanks for your help sourcing some good examples. After all community is what forums are all about.

Indeed, we have enjoying this exclusivity for a while now.

I think you summed it up nicely.

But as these cars drop to the sub 10k mark the rice will only get stronger.

I painted my lower chrome grille portion to a "black chrome" myself and failed miserably. Ended up looking like a dark primer colour. Ordered a replacement from the dealer because I figure it matches the door handles and bumper trim.
I did decide to paint the silver coloured grille to a heavy metallic black and i think it looks a lot sexier. Will post pics after I wash her tomorrow.

Type, "paint grill" in the "Search This Forum" box (main RL sub-forum), and look through the threads.

I just did mine.
I had the gold emblems on the car which were not to my liking. I bought a can a matte black plasti dip and painted them. Thisstuff is the easiest to work with.

Sprayed on 3 coats, 1 at a time after each coat dried - picked a corner and pulled the excess off in 1 strip.

Painted Grill Examples Needed

I have a 2007 RL and am contemplating painting the grill next spring when I respray the front end. I am thinking of a silver and black combo but am open to ideas....my car is Redando Red. I have seen some examples of several Second Gen grills, and would like to see what you guys have done, especially in the earlier styles of grill similar to mine. Did a search but only found a handful of ideas.

Please post pics here and thanks in advance.

I highly doubt you will any more traction than the last guy to post this thread, but we can leave them unmerged for a while to see.

I painted the upper/lower chrome body colour & the grille itself low gloss black. I DIY'd it so the match isn't perfect, I can't complain though.

If your RL has CMBS/ACC, you can't paint the grille as the grille lines are cast as part of the emblem/shield. I tried. Take the emblem off of a CMBS/ACC -equipped car and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The shield is purely that, a plastic shield to protect the radar unit from debris. You could potentially paint it. I doubt that it would look good, but it wouldn't affect the system.

All true and it would look like ass. My body guy and I discussed this six ways from Sunday trying to figure out how to make it work and we couldn't come up with a way other than just painting the shield but then you open yourself up to rock chips, etc. Not worth the trouble.

^I'm not sure about those headlights. If you're looking into a retrofit, HIDplanet is a great resource for information. Another member here, Carbon Legend, does retrofits on our headlights. He did mine, definitely worth reaching out to him if you want!

I always liked the 2G grille the way it is. But because of the modern Acura look:

This Spring I am going to vinyl wrap mine just like below to keep my RL looking as new and updated as possible.
