So the RL is coming up on its 105k service and I was searching and found that $700 is the lucky number when it comes to the timing belt/water pump service. I was just talked to my local Acura dealer and they quoted me $950. Unfortunately, I dont believe there is another Acura dealer anywhere near. Thoughts?

$950 is a very good price if that includes the water pump and all belts including the external belts if done at an Acura/Honda dealer.

So I dont know if that includes spark plugs, but he did say they replace the tensioner and all the belts while doing the tb/water pump. Also that includes loaner service. I dont know if honda has the loaner service.

If it includes the plugs that is a very fair price. If it doesn't I would try to talk them down a bit but I still feel that is a fair price overall from a Honda/Acura dealer. At least you know it will be done properly.

Doubt it includes the plugs. Plugs cost about $70 off Amazon and take 1-2 hrs to put in.bdealer would like charge $300 to do plugs.

If you're a DIYer, it can easily be done with quality parts. With the cost of parts (water pump, tensioners/pulleys, belts, etc.), it can be done for under $200. I did mine for around that cost including an oil chang and took about a day. It's not too bad of a job, just time consuming.

I agree it isn't that difficult if you have the know how. If you make a mistake you could destroy the engine. I would not recommend doing this job yourself unless you are mechanic. Just my opinion.

I think the truth is in the middle here (like it usually is). Saying changing a timing belt is easy is a little foolish. Changing a cabin air filter is easy, and people still manage to screw that up. Saying that only a mechanic can do it is a bit of hyperbole but probably closer to the truth than it being easy.

Do you have ALL of the correct tools? Do you know how they work? Do you have a step-by-step legitimate instruction to guide you? Have you ever done more on a car than change the battery? If you meet all of those criteria, then you can probably do this.

But lets be real here. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is replacing a cabin air filter and 10 is replacing a head gasket, a timing belt service is higher than a 5. Maybe not by much, but I highly doubt it's lower.

Honda dealer here has specials for timing belt replacement for 6 cylinder engines for $630. This includes timing belt, engine accessory drive belts, water pump, seals, and coolant.


Confirmed with my Acura dealer and they will match that price as long as I bring in the ad. Special has been running for like 2 years now...lol

Just note that it does not likely include the tensioner, that's like another $130 installed. Adding that in, and it's the same price my Honda dealer normally charges and what I paid.

This is a tough one for me. I spent 1200 for this service on my Pilot and that included spark plugs. So $950 seems ok, but I have not done this on my RL, cause mine has rust, and that makes the car worthless in my opinion. I still go back and forth on whether I should do it or not. In all likeliness the belt will not break anytime soon, but if it does, we all know it's time to buy a new car. We did it on my wife's pilot at 110K and last month at 160K some idiot totalled the car for us, now we have a new Honda CR-V which is a fine little car but sad compared to a Pilot or RL, both of which drive like a luxury car should (similar engine). I'm already looking at replacements for my RL like an Accord Sport or that new Mazda 6 looks nice, but I think I'm just going to drive my RL into the ground. Maybe I'll get lucky and someone will total it for me. I already spend $900 on the RL last month for front brakes, new headlight bulbs, and all steering links, which were shot from driving with warped rotors for so long, and that's all I'm willing to spend on it this year. Don't know what to do.

$950 is a very reasonable price. Just the parts alone on eBay is around $320-$430 depending on what you want to include.

$950 seems like a decent price for the total package considering my dealership has a $999.95 coupon for the same thing.. doesn't hurt to talk them down a bit though.. I don't see why they won't be able to do $900 at the very least.
