Software Update?

I've owned a 2013 and now a 2017 RDX and I have yet to see a software update for the head unit. Other vehicles I've owned typically get their update over the air through your cellphone's connection. Does Acura ever realease any updates, potential fixes for glitches and bugs in the system?

I believe that the dealer has to install software updates.

Just went to the dealer, $145 for updates (whatever is needed according to the computer), will do it soon.

for that kinda money, they better be able to provide good info as to what the updates actually are...is that for updates after the warranty has expired?

I'm pretty sure warranty won't cover updates anyway, if it's running fine there's nothing to fix, I doubt they'll do it for free anyway.
I got updates done on other used cars I bought before and it was around that price too.

Audi checks for, and installs updates each time the car is in for service. No charge.

Are the updates to the firmware (head unit) or just a nav update?

Updates on firmware. I don't think the Navigation gets updated for free. Most recently there was a software update for the climate control unit.

Nav updates are separate, you have to buy the disc for that, updates I'm talking about are for the ECU/TCU.

When I go there to get it done I'll post what they did in details, I'll get it done within a month.

I wonder if there will be software updates on the "Variable Cylinder Management". I really don't even notice when it kicks in, but some people really have problems with it.

Paying for updates other than Nav updates?
Shouldn't update be under warranty?

I've had a couple of free updates done on my '15 TLX, both done when the car was in for oil changes. One fixed a bunch of stuff with the 8-speed, the other reinvented the radio and nav interface. The dealer never told me they were doing updates, they just did it.

Real updates to the nav system don't happen too often. With a new update on our '13 RDX, the system sent us off on an entirely wrong route heading westbound into St. Louis after construction was done way earlier. It took us an extra 15 minutes to find our way out of downtown. Similarly, Hwy. 24 between Fort Wayne and Toledo had been completed at least two years earlier but the system showed us plowing through cornfields at 70 mph. Same thing on the rebuilt roads north of DFW airport. On our '17 RDX our 2-year-old subdivision was nowhere to be found. So I don't intend to waste money on nav updates. Use Google maps, updated a lot more often.

Just came back from the dealer to get the software updates done, they also deleted old Acuralink messages.
It was only one small update, not happy that I spent $145 for one little thing that changed nothing and took 15 minutes (in and out of the service bay), but the only way to know if any updates had been done recently or 3 years ago was to go to the dealer and get it done, now I know.

So what did the update get you Joe? Besides your wallet being $145 lighter?

Got me to feel better.
I did it thinking it was gonna get a lot of updates, assuming it had never been done since made, but it looks like updates were done before.

I suspect there have been very few updates to the system. What you got may be the only updates ever released.

Now we all know not to go to dealer asking for these things. If they do it for some other reason or as part of a problem solving under warranty, then it is fine. Otherwise ... well ......Thanks Joe.

Unless you find a dealer willing to check first, free of charge, before deciding if it's worth spending money on minor updates.

You have to buy the software and install it. https://acuranavi.navigation.com/. This will get you what you need. We have a 2014 RDX and I'm doing the first update since buying the car new. It's not necessary to update yearly. I feel every 5 years, or longer is fine. Also, FYI, I'm installing software that says 2022 but in reality, it's a2021 version...they are always a year behind the release year.
