I'm driving an '05 TL now and I plan on getting an RDX with all the Tech/Advanced package options offered. I know no one knows for sure but I would like input or opinions on reasons to wait for a 2018 model if there are any.

It is speculation, but likely that the '18 will be the last year of the current gen RDX. Probably no difference from the 16/17 cars.

the 2018 model will have a new 3 cylinder turbo diesel and Acura will go back to a 4 speed manual transmission. Also they will remove Black, white, and gray exterior colors.

i think anything is possible. from a corporate perspective, they need to 'standardize' on the grill so there may be a chance they do that on all models to line up with the 2017 MDX.

as for cycles... i dont now... i mean, look at the history:

2007-2009 Acura RDX 1st gen

2013-2015 Acura RDX 2nd gen refresh

BUT, stranger things have happened... (i.e. 4 yr cycle for the 3G TL)

I see what you mean..... It looks like the exact same body shape of previous generation Q5. Just changed the grille and headlights. I'm sure the interior is totally revamped. But how did they miss it. In profile, it still looks like the boxy "VW tiguan" to me.
Doesn't have the sleekness of Audi sedans.

^^ I have to say I prefer the more elegant styling of the German SUVs compared to the Japanese. Especially when you look at something so over-styled like the RX and NX. Just my personal taste, of course.

I agree with you partly. The Lexus is overstyled. The Germans are boxy and understated. The RDX has got it perfect. .

Among the Germans, there's also the Mercedes GLC to consider. Nice exterior and luxurious but minimalist interior.
I hope the new RDX front end works...I'm not completely won over by the MDX's looks.

More and more I'm wondering if the 2018 will basically carry over from 2017. The first gen had a six-year run. 2018 would be the current gen's sixth year. No substantive rumors lately, no unveiling at Detroit etc. Maybe it would add the new "corporate" grill like the MDX? (IMHO, a good reason to buy the 2017).

And if you like the smooth V6...with the CRV going 4 cylinder turbo, could the RDX be too far behind? I'm thinking whenever the update does occur, we may see a 4 cylinder turbo, and for the V6 alone (along with the smooth, well tested 6 spd A/T) we went with the '17. Turbos are OK...just not as smooth and refined as a V6, IMHO.

The 2018 RDX is going to be the same as the 2016. The 1G was the same from 2007-2009, and then again from 2010-2012. The 2G MDX was the same from 2007-2009 and 2010-2013...the 3G RDX could take until 2020 honestly. I actually see them withholding it until 2020 because they would not want to put a full body redesign and all new infotainment setup on the RDX but would rather reserve them for the MDX or RLX.

Despite all the (my?) complaints the 2G RDX is selling very very well, there really is no rush for them to redesign it right now anyways. However Acura has had really weird product cycles in the past like the 3G TL and how it only lasted 4 years in total. I hope they will maintain a V6 and bring in a turbo option (everyone else and even mainstream brands have multiple options for their engine choices...some with as many as 3-5 choices). Move up to an 8 speed, no 9 speed, and bring back SH-AWD. That rounds out my wish list.

Acura seems squarely focused on those that favor a soft and quiet ride with the RDX. I don't see the options range unless Acura decides to target a wider audience with this vehicle.

New user here who literally joined the forum this morning as I am looking at the 2017 RDX as my next car. I had the same question about getting a '17 or '18 RDX until I saw this speculative article about what the '18 could look like:

Turbo 4 cylinder and a CVT would be deal breaker for me, so leaning towards a 2017 instead.

Since I'm leaning toward leasing, mainly due to the speed of advances in (desirable!!!) technology and lower payments (I'm retired...so no more 50K miles per year for me!) , I'll probably go with the 2017 to avoid being stuck with the option of a 4cyl. turbo. The auto show is here (Chicago) in Feb. so maybe I can get some insight into the 2018. I would imagine if they do go the 4cyl. turbo route, the 2017s will be in higer demand. Oh well...what do I know?

After years of having 6 cylinder powered cars my latest ride is a turbcharged 4. Good power, great torque but that nonlinear build up of power as the turbo comes online is maddening for me. I am looking forward to going back to a 6 cylinder.
