2016 RDX Full Size Spare Tire and the Foam

I just purchased at 2016 RDX. It has a full size spare tire. In the compartment around the spare is foam like you would get in a box with a new TV with some molded compartments for the tire changing tools. Any issues that you can think of with removing the foam, putting the tools in a bag and gaining more space for more tools and such? The only thing I can think of is noise may increase.

Thanks in advance....

Noise and It may also give support for the door.

If the things you want to store are too much... maybe you can just shave out the foam to fit them?

Yes, that's all that fits with all the foam. See the attached pic.

Thanks! I wasn't looking forward to spending $400 for a donut tire. I will have 2 sets of tires and rims (summer and winter) and it's good to know I can use one of those as a spare. Just need to buy the car now.

If you see my pic above, You can see trap door has a place to rest around all edges and center has the black supports on tire. I think its just for sound, not structure. I might take out foam take out insulation the compartment with a different material and .

That's not a full sized spare. its a 17x4 rim with a temporary tire. Diameter is close to full sized, but width is a lot less....

Yeah you are right about temp tire that is smaller. Its not classics doughnut either, but it'd measured at 165/90R17. You might be able to get a legit spare (235/60R18) in the compartment if you shave some of the black foam on the trap door. It will be awfully close.

So the RDX has two different sizes of spare tires? That's interesting.
@OP. Can you post the measurement seen on your spare tire please.
ps. I see that you'd already posted it in the previous post. Thanks.

If I understand the metrics, 165 (165/90R16) would be the width of the tire in mm. If that's right, the 165 doughnut would be 6.5" wide and a 235 would be 9.25" wide.

I haven't purchased my RDX yet, so I can't go out and measure the depth of the compartment. I would be much obliged if one of the RDX aces on this forum could check it out for me.

I was told by dealer if you get advance package, you will get full size spare tire instead of donut.

That's the right math. If the weather turns for the better tomorrow I will measure the clearance above the tire to the trap door. You can tell by my picture that around the tire I have wound jumper cables. I will measure that gap too. Probably wont have until after 3pm ET

Now you have joined the ranks of millions who know never to listen to anything a dealer has to say.

OK, I just heard back from a dealer who measured the spare tire compartment. She advises that a full size tire/rim will NOT fit in the compartment. I'll probably check it out myself in deference to dirleton's dead-on comment.

The full-size tire is not going to fit in there.
