Question how many hours labor to replace a ball-joint?

I was wondering how many hours it takes for a skilled mechanic to replace a faulty ball-joint ?

Yes, but if they bill you by the book it will probably be 2-3 hours?

I was recently quoted about $600 for new ball joints. The mechanic said it would be about 3-4 hours of labor and then some time for the alignment. I can't really even hear any noises. Does this sound about right?

It doesn't to me. Unless FWD makes it tougher it shouldn't take nearly that long. Ball joints or even control arms aren't that hard to do if you have basic tools. Why do you think the ball joints are bad?

Op I don't think you have been clear if ur taklking about both lower ball joints or both uppers which include the entire arm and u need to remove the struts. Or a combination of the two?

None of you are mechanics

All these guys spit a random number out. “Yeah should be about 30 mins to 1 hour.” First thing a real mechanic would do is ask the year, make and model because that changes EVERYTHING. A ball joint on a Toyota is a lot different than a ball joint on a Dodge Ram. Not including how rusty and seized on everything is. I swapped out a ball joint on a 1970 Oldsmobile that took an hour of hammering because it was completely seized onto the control arm.

I know this thread is old, but people will look this up and read this BS. Before anyone wonders, I run my own mobile mechanic business. I have experience to back it up. Instead of asking random people who don’t know what their talking about, try contacting multiple shops and asking for labor times.

Welcome to AZine, Elyse Ryder.

Yea, I too wonder what car he could be referring to in this 2G Acura CL forum.

All true - I just replaced my lower balljoints on both sides and it took me (not a professional) 45min per side using a 32mm impact socket and a 4lb mini sledge to remove and the powerbuilt ball joint kit for honda's to install. It's not my first rodeo on ball joints, so i would say a first timer would spend probably double that, as a guess

I have to agree that one should definitely contact a few different shops to get an estimate on time and cost.

I also agree that there's no harm in coming here and asking others what time they've experienced (some first time, and others have done it more than a couple times on their car); the time the mechanics give (if they are as skilled as they claim) should be the same or better than the mechanics on this site.

I don't think it helps one argument to claim that others don't know what they are talking about (in a vehicle specific forum) and then disclose that you indeed are a mechanic and that we should only listen to you (or even other mechanics like you).

"pay no attention to the man behind the curtain over there!"
