Television: Stranger Things

I did a search, couldn't find anything about it.

Anyone else check this Netflix original out? It's got a 9.3 on IMDb and an 88% on rotten tomatoes, it also has earned the highly coveted black label seal of approval.

Quote:
This thrilling Netflix-original drama stars award-winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983 -- inspired by a time when tales of science fiction captivated audiences. When Joyce's 12-year-old son, Will, goes missing, she launches a terrifying investigation into his disappearance with local authorities. As they search for answers, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unnerving supernatural forces, and a very unusual little girl.

I watched the 1st episode, and I like the look and feel they were going after. I'll continue with it.

I've watched the whole thing so I won't say anything other than it seems like it is a one off mini series and not going to be an annual season show. It tells a good story over the span of 8 episodes and would appear to wrap up neatly with no "season 2 coming" type cliffhanger.

The show is great. I hope they do it like American Horror Story where each season is a different set of characters and story line. Really well done

I heard this is pretty disturbing. Something involving a child doing something disturbing I think. Is it not big of a deal? Almost caught up with Mr Robot so I'd like another summer show.

I wouldn't call it "disturbing", I don't recall anything where watching made me question morality. It's freaky, it's bizarre, sometimes spooky, but not really disturbing

Fantastic show...makes me feel nostalgic for these types of movies from teh 80s and 90s, which was probably the point.

Obviously, I have questions as does any one else who watched it.
Kinda knew (because of the whole 80s theme) that Will was going to cough up something!!
also found it interesting that the Sherrif Knows something we dont by feeding her

Really enjoying this show. Finished episode 4 last night. Stopped watching Breaking Bad (at season 5, episode 11) to watch this.

Dare I say I'm enjoying this show more than final episodes of BB?

Love the 80s feel. I'm about 3 episodes in, a lot going on but definitely looking for the story to unfold. At the moment I don't have much of a clue as to what is going on except a boy is missing and there's some crazy sci-fi shit happening.

1 more episode to go for tonight.

Dumb company execs. Bunch of old out-of-touch dinosaurs. Passed up on another hit like with Deadpool.

Netflix's newest hit show was rejected at least 15 times by other networks here's why that's important

August 5, 2016

Netflix's new show "Stranger Things" is a massive hit, charming critics, viewers, and Wall Street analysts alike.

But it wasn't always clear that it was going to be a success, according to its creators, Matt and Ross Duffer.

The show, a supernatural thriller filled with '80s nostalgia, wasn't a concept that networks immediately "got." In fact, Matt told Rolling Stone that "Stranger Things" had been rejected 15 to 20 times by different networks.

The executives particularly didn't like that "Stranger Things" was a show with children as lead actors but wasn't intended for kids.

"There was a week where we were like, 'This isn't going to work because people don't get it,'" Matt told Rolling Stone.

But that was before Netflix.

The Duffers' story lends credence to the theory that Netflix has a knack for identifying which seemingly niche shows will have massive appeal.

Pacific Crest analysts Andy Hargreaves and Evan Wingren pointed to this in a note to investors on Tuesday.

"Netflix has taken an idea and a project that was off the radar of most, and grown an audience at what is likely a small fraction of the cost per hour viewed of any other TV show to premiere this year," they wrote.

The analysts think this is evidence that Netflix's big original-content push is destined for success.

Netflix will release a whopping 600 hours of original content this year. The question isn't whether it can identify a sleeper hit like "Stranger Things" or "Making a Murderer," but whether it can be more cost-effective on the whole at producing hits that drive subscriber growth.

Note: "Stranger Things" executive producer Shawn Levy told Variety that Netflix was the first buyer they pitched after he became involved with the show.

Apparently the kid who played Dustin actually has cleidocranial dysplasia and really doesn't have teeth. They actually wrote that stuff into the script after they cast him.

did everyone catch the kick ass nod to LOTR at the end? (in addition to Mirkwood and I believe some other things scattered throughout)

I don't know man Narcos was pretty damn good as well as House of Cards season 1. The advantage that Stranger Things certainly has was the ability to go only 8 eps. Luckily Netflix is very creatively flexible thus churning out better series than most networks.

I second AZuser, out of ALL of Netflix originals, this has been the best so far.

ppl are raving about "the get down" but I couldnt get into it after 15 mins of it...too cheesey for me.

This is probably the most recent Netflix show completed so the recentness might skew your view. I don't think Get Down can fit the level of epicness that this show or the one I mentioned contain based on premise.

I think what makes Stranger Things so awesome is how easy it is to get into. I think it easily appeals to a wider audience. The nostalgia definitely helps too.

House of Cards is good too, but it has a more serious tone and probably appeals more to an adult audience. Same with Narcos and Orange Is The New Black and to a certain extent Daredevil.

I can't say any of ^ those ^ shows drew me in in the same way as Stranger Things did. Each episode of Stranger Things was consistently good. Part of it might also be because Stranger Things wouldn't piss me off like House of Cards or Narcos did... since many of those things/situations happen(ed) in real life.

With Stranger Things, it's an escape from reality. With House of Cards and Narcos, I'm just reminded of it.

I really appreciated the truly mysterious nature of the show - and how "believable" that was. I mean for the first few episodes there were so many blanks and no real information about anything.

In a current age where we are accustomed to being spoon-fed things in entertainment and other avenues, this stood out as a solid difference. In a lot of movies these days, they even show a "flashback" sequence to some earlier scene just to make sure the audience "gets it". lol so stupid. Let the audience think a little. or a lot. Back in the day that was how it was done.

The Duffer Brothers captured a lot of film elements and presented it to the Audience in a great, clever way.

a lot of fim noir elements, which makes it exciting and unpredictable.

I really wish this season was longer, I finished The Getdown, good in its own right but not as enticing as Stranger Things is.
