Most I've paid so far is $250 for a 1:18.

I can't speak for all the kits, but some of them are semi assembled which is kinda nice because you get to at least put part of it together. Like the Enzo and Carrera.
Okay...TOMCAT aside which is a plastic glue-w/-cement kit, how is the overall quality of the Tamiyas...and let's benchmark them against regular stuff like AutoArt or Kyosho.

I've always known Kyosho to be the detail king when it comes to scale model diecast cars. AutoArt seems to be just as good.

Kyosho modified F-40

Yea Kyosho's diecast models in recent years have been pretty good. But the 1/18 NSX-S I have is only average at best.

Well, you may also want to consider Exoto then...

They have some really amazing detail in their diecast line...even better than Kyosho or AutoArt.

IMO, Exoto has gone downhill. To top it off, if you talk to the resellers that do business with Exoto, as well as some of their direct customers, they are lowlife asshats to do business with.

IMO the current reigning king of die cast cars is CMC of Germany. Their last two or three release have been spectacular. I was going to hold off posting pics, but since the topic came up here are a few images of what I should have in my hands within 4-5 weeks. It's a 1960 Maserati Tipo 61. The famous "Birdcage." These images are from a production example that I have seen myself. It's even more impressive in person.

And one company PR photo for good measure...

I already have the Maserati 250F F1 car from CMC and it is compared to anything else in my collection.

I always want a CMC 1/18 SLR. But they're like $150 to 200 a piece everywhere...can't afford one right now.

Funny you should post that MSZ. I just got Auto Art's 2005 LeMans winning C6R in 1:18. For the money, I actually don't think it's all that great. Especially since it's a non-opening model. I just wanted a C6R in 1:18 though.

BTW - I've probably logged about 2K miles in that #50 C5R. Of course, I shut off the computer after each session.

Sad to know its a non-opening model...

How much did you pay for the C6R?

A lot of the Le Mans cars from AutoArt don't open. The Calsonic Skyline GT-R I mentioned a few posts ago as well as the CTS-V both don't open.

I think it was $75 . I don't mind paying that kind of price for decent non-opening model but IMO this one is even less detailed on the exterior than the Auto Art CLK GTR I posted pics of. And that model opens to boot. I also have Auto Art's Porsche 917 longtail (opening) and it's exterior detail is outstanding. I think the C6R might just be a dud in their recent lineup.

BTW - My current dream would be for someone to do a quality 1:18 of the '91 Jaguar XJR-14 in Group C Silk Cut livery.

I wish I had more pics, but this older guy brought around 100 of these to a Z meet a few years ago in chicago:

You can't really tell, but they are all Z's, and about a 100 total. More in his truck that he didn't unload when I took this pic.

There you go, I think AUTOArt dropped the ball on this one...stickers and gaps aren't expected before I bought this. Well, it was one of their earlier releases, the overall quality shouldn't be better than the Carrera GT anyway.

And the thing about those knockouts is that if you were ever in the market for am SL500/CL500 type car, the Vantage is actually in that same price bracket!
