For those of you who stayed in kauai, where did you stay and what did you think of the hotel?

less of an issue for Kauai, since its only for a couple of nights at the end of the trip.

I can look on expedia for 3-5 star places, but I am wondering where people have actually stayed and if they liked it, was it the right part of the island to stay, etc...

I was there about a month ago. Stayed at the Courtyard (there is only one). We liked the location because it was about half way to the end of the road on the south west side and the end of the road on the north side.

I stayed there on points, so not sure what the cost is. The place was nice, right on the water. Although the beach is not ideal for swimming because it has rocks/reef coming all the way to the water's edge.

We love Hawaii. This was our third trip in less than a year. My fav island is the big island by far.

Haven't read the entire thread so not sure where you are going, but hit me up if you're going to big island and want some suggestions. As far as Kauai, I would NOT miss the Helicopter tour (doors off is recommended). Bring a wide angle lens and you're set.

You want the Leis and Hula dancers with tiki torches and mai tais.. or just a reasonable room? Want to be on the beach, and do you intend to swim / snorkel off the beach or just burn?

Kauai is best explored. I recommend staying there on the cheap or even go on day trip, but if you want the royal treatment, different story.

Big Island is numero uno for many reasons. I've lived on Maui, Oahu and Big Island. No place in the world like Big Island. Oahu is fucking awesome too if you know where to go and what to do, but.. locals only.

Kaanapali beach area, around Black Rock or nearby. Has to be on the beach.

Would love a place without a ton of kids and also with some type of umbrellas for the beach/pool areas.

Where have you stayed?

anyone stayed at the Royal Lahaina?
Can't help with the hotel recommendations, as I stayed on the south side Marriott. I have to mention my check-in story though.

At the check-in counter, was staying there on points, and am a platinum member, I asked the guy if there was a complementary upgrade available. The guy got really nervous after I said that and after a moment says, "Sir, the room you have is the biggest/best room in the hotel".

I've gotten that response plenty of times before and the room turned out to be a regular room, so I wasn't too thrilled about the response. Anyway, we are making our way to the room with out luggage, and a bell boy is on his way back to the front. He greets us and asks what room we're in. I mention the room number and he immediately stops and insists on helping with the luggage and showing us around the room.

At that point, I start to think something is up. We get to the room, and I see a big ass hallway in the room with lots of doors. So the guy gives us the tour of the presidential suite. It was amazing. It could easily have handled 6 people living there, with 2, we didn't know what to do with all that room.

There were two bedrooms, 2.5 baths, dining room that could fit 10, a living room that could fit 20, and 5 balconies.

That was the best upgrade I've ever had.

Would love to do a heli tour, but may have to settle for a boat tour of the napali coast, other half is not too keen on helicopters.

Looking for a place in kauai that will let us explore and also have swimm-able beach. Does not need to be the Ritz, but would prefer nicer as this will be the final days of the trip...

Should we stay north near Hanalei Bay or south near Poipu? How long would it take for a boat tour to get to the napali cost from the south, or would we drive to the north and get the boat there?

Here is what you can expect to see if you opt for the Heli tour:

All those beaches you see are accessible only by hike or only by water.

It is very dependent on the vendor. There are a lot of "companies" providing tours of the Napali coast. If you make reservations during the time that a cruise ship is there, you might be out of luck on a lot of the Napali tours.

But if you are in Kauai you definitely want to see the coastline of Napali. It is already beautiful from afar. Getting up close to it is even more stunning.

I'm usually not a big fan of Helicopter tours. Took one in Big Island, was a complete waste of money @ 200/p

I was interested in the doors off tour because, well, no windows to shoot through. It was only an extra 30/p for the doors off tour @270/p

I have yet to process my pics, but I know I have some good ones. I wished I had taken my 10-22, instead I opted for the 17-40.

It does get a bit crazy when the heli banks and you see nothing between you and the ground 10K feet below.

Here is some footage shot from my trip to Kauai: Waterproof/Underwater camera thread

Any "must do/see" stuff on Kauai beside the napali coast and the canyon?

Secret Falls hike - it involves kayaking and hiking, it's awesome
Blue Hole Hike
Also, you can offroad to the Jurassic Park gates, past that, and tube down a reservoir into a really pleasant, large wading pool.
You can also go hunting with some locals, wild pig + large knife is always a good time
Turtle Beach is good for snorkeling
The little town of Hanalei is also very nice to walk around and spend your time

Kaua'i is my favorite island. I used to live in Lana'i.

I stayed here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...ai_Hawaii.html

Great view! Unless you're big baller and want to stay on the north side of the island. But the expensive hotels are too "out of touch" with island life.

Just booked this AM. 6 nights on Maui and 6 on Kauai.

Costco Travel is awesome, although we are booking Kauai hotels on our own (Costco does not offer the ones we wanted).
