Computer virus help...UgH! FML!
I have a computer virus and it keeps coming up with a warning and wants me to ring a number. Like that would happen.
My question is: should I pay Dell to help me back up my computer and reset my Windows 8? Or can I try buying the upgraded version of Avast?
It is a computer I use for work and can work around it for now. Help!

go to control panel, then programs and features (or click uninstall a program). Sort that list by date modified. Uninstall everything that was installed on the day you first got infected.
download malwarebytes here https://ninite.com/malwarebytes/
run that program it will install malwarebytes
then open malwarebytes after it installs, there will be an icon on the desktop
run the scan and after it's done hit "quarantine all" in the lower left hand corner
then reset your browser homepage and search settings, those steps vary by browser

Also follow these steps to see if you have a proxy server enabled and to disable it. Proxy servers are often used by malware to inject ads into websites you visit. If you're still having ads after running malwarebytes you might have a proxy server running that's injecting those ads.

If you want to run a root kit scan which isn't a bad idea here's the two that I use.
Eset
http://download.eset.com/special/ESETSirefefCleaner.exe
Eset is an instant scan, as soon as you run it it'll tell you immediately if you're infected. If you are click "y" to remove and then "y" to restart. If not you'll just press enter to close the program
The other is Kaspersky TDSSKiller
Downloading TDSSKiller
Download and run that, it only takes a minute to scan, if it finds any rootkits choose cure and restart.

IIRC, MBAM free does a rootkit scan if you tell it to.... I don't think it does by default, though.

Yes, I've not used it much so can't say how well it works. Running ESET and TDSSkiller have been almost 100% for me only in rare cases do I need to run ComboFix on top of that.
