Lost 1st, 3rd and 5th gears. Shift Cable?
Hey y'all I'm hoping you can help me with a problem I encountered last night on my way home from work. I've got a '97 2.2cl that a friend and I did a 5 speed swap on after the auto trans took a dump. I will admit I didn't do a lot of the work putting the transmission in, but I feel I am pretty mechanically inclined and can tackle most jobs. I'm hoping some of you have had this happen before and can give me some pointers.
So last night I was shifting normally, came to a stop sign and tried to put it in 1st gear. I let the clutch out and gave it gas and nothing. It was like I was still in neutral. Luckily I was only a few blocks from home. I put it in 2nd gear and it was fine, I ended up taking off in 2nd. I went to shift to third and it was the same thing, just like I was in neutral.
Now when I move the shifter horizontally in the top gears, there is no resistance, I can go from left to right without hitting the spots where the gears should be. but if I put it in 2nd or 4th or reverse I have to throw it back up to where the top gears would be to get into neutral. This leads me to believe it is the shifter cable being worn out or faulty.
So this morning I moved the shifter around and it looks as if the cable is moving on the transmission side, however, when I push it to 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear it still will not engage the gears, even though the cable moves.
This makes me think the cable might not be bad but I may have lost a clip or bushings along the route of the cables. Has anyone had this problem and can give me some pointers on where to look? I'm fairly busy with work and don't have time to dick around as this car is my DD. ( YES THAT MEANS IM DRIVING IT IN 2ND AND 4TH GEAR ONLY )

So I got this fixed.
It ended up being cable coming loose in the bracket that is just before where the cables bolt to the transmission. this caused the cable to not travel all the way out of neutral. Easy fix, but it took a while to get to it and put it back together, I'd say 2.5 hours or so. Just wanted to update.
