Weird sound when cold start
Hello, I have a 2012 AWD tl with 20K miles and recently after I start the car in the morning or after the car has cooled completely, I hear a weird noise right when the car is being put on. It's so hard to explain the exact sound but it's definataly not normal. Almost like a rattle sound which seems to be coming from the driver side area. This Only happens as the car is turning on and then goes away after on. Any idea what it could be?

Agree with Arek1200, it's kind of difficult to help diagnosing the "weird noise" without any idea of how it sounds like.

Some owners have reported a gurgling noise from the transmission fluid filter which is on the driver's side under the battery. I think this was introduced on the 12's. Search on here for atf filter issues. Sounds like the sound you have asked about.

Please see this thread. There is also NUMEROUS threads about this.

For anyone else that may be in my case. Here is my email to my dealership with the 2 attachments.
Sir I have done more research. Please see the attached.
This forum thread talks about the 2012 TL having issues with a “gurgling” sound on startup.
https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-2009-2014-123/atf-filter-change-2012-tl-awd-911134/
One person stated "When it goes bad ,it makes an annoying gurgling sound...
I had it replaced under warranty….”
Another person said "Arek, when i first start up my car in the morning (first start when cold), then put it into reverse, it will make this gurgle like water or air bubbles flowing. It does it for about 15 secs then goes away. It will not do it the rest of the day...im in sales, so im starting and stopping my car 10-15 times a day. Is that when you heard that gurgle you are talking about? If so, did it do it after the first cold start?”
A response to this someone said "External transmission fluid filter!!!
That was my exact problem. See my thread below were some other members were nice enough to help me out seeing how dealerships have been having a hard problem diagnosing this issue. There is also a sound cloud clip of the noise.”
Now here is a completely different thread about the same issue. All the people posting have a 2012 TL
https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-problems-fixes-297/need-help-identifying-noise-904002/
Ironically, one poster said this "The dealership has already replaced the alternator belt and the belt tensioner adjuster, also the propeller shaft but that was bc another problem.”

Different posters have posted similar sound clips:

Here is even a different person with a youtube video, again a 2012 TL

Finally one person said this "Good news... You don't have to live with this noise any longer. My 2012 TL SH-AWD made the same exact noise, every morning for the first few minutes after starting it up. And the colder the weather, the worse it was.
I took my car to the dealer a few days ago and they diagnosed it as a failed transmission filter. The transmission filter is external to the transmission, it's cylindrical in shape and apparently has a baffle inside of it that was broken, causing the noise. When they called me and told me this I was skeptical but they replaced it and the strange cold startup noise is 100% gone!"
This poster included his Pohanka Acura receipt to show the transmission filter that I was told by you all doesn’t exist. Please see attached.
Please also see attached diagram of where the transmission filter is.
Thanks

Sly,
I see your response, but this noise is totally different from the ones you posted. Check the clips out that are posted at the beginning of the thread. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I listened to both clips but to be honest it's hard to hear the engine over the chime from the dashboard because you have the door open. Also you are coming up on three months since you first posted this, have you brought it to the dealer yet?

Yes I did, but it only happens sometimes. So they weren't able to reproduce it. The noise I'm concerned about is what you hear before the chimes, meaning exactly as the car is starting.

I've relistened to both of your recording clips a couple of times and there is entirley too much going on in the video to be able to discern what sound you want us to hear. Diagnostically I would try closing the door and turn the ignition on, but not start your car. See if you can reproduce the noise/sound. It could be your fuel pump, could be some relays clicking as the ignition is energized or something completely different. If you are going to post new clips, start your recording and make make sure you have a period of silence before you hit the ignition.

I've listened to your videos so much that now I get annoyed when my own car chimes at it. I don't hear anything abnormal. What I don't understand is if you're able to duplicate it so easily, why have you not taken it to the dealership yet?

I posted another video about 3 posts up. I've taken it to them and they claim they can't hear it. Only happens when first starting the car when cold. Won't happen when the car is warm.
