2011 RDX fragile FWD Driveshaft assemblies

Is it just me? Any other FWD owners please chime in.

First off - we love our RDX. Would love to keep it for a couple hundred thousand more miles. But...

7/14 68000 mi replaced left driveshaft assy under warranty.

8/15 90000 mi seems same symptom now coming from right side. Dealer has not looked at it yet to confirm. Out of warranty, trying to get goodwill repair. They want $100 to troubleshoot and a total est. of $500 to repair. OE parts - ~$150 L/R and ~$190 for the center.

What's next? The center? (halfshaft) I had higher expectations.

I was smart enough when we bought it new to ask if it was an lsd or an open front diff.

Only I wasn't smart enough to wait to buy it before being sure.

A few days later the answer came: one leg FWD!

It's repeatedly breakable but I can't find any TSB's?

Just curious, what symptoms are you experiencing? Could there be an underlying issue that isn't being addressed?

Also, if you want to save some $$$ you can get the parts and replace in a few hours. It's not the most difficult job out there, just requires a bit of patience and elbow grease.

1. Remove wheel and brake rotor
2. Disconnect steering and strut (in most cases)
3. Remove axle nut - may need a cheater bar for this one
4. Tap out axle assembly
5. Put new one in and reverse order.

You can look up videos on Youtube - the procedure is similar on almost any FWD car. Some cars will lose tranny fluid - if so be prepared to catch and measure the amount lost, and replace with fresh fluid when job is done.

Thanks Tom. I will look into r&ring myself. Saving $350 would be nice.

No codes thrown. As far as any other condition as a possible cause- anything is possible.

Replacing the d/s shaft assy eliminated the symptoms last year.

The 7/14 d/s symptoms: An audible thump felt in the steering wheel and floor. Increasingly felt during medium to hard acceleration. A bit like wheel hop with no hop, and less violent. It's instinctive to back off as soon as it's felt.

Now we are starting to feel what seems to be about the same coming from the pass side. Not felt in the steering wheel as much. Nursing it along by applying gentle throttle pressure.

Do you have any mods like Hondata or flashpro? Maybe those individual parts can't handle the extra power compared to being spread around like in sh-awd. I imagine sh-awd driveline loss is around 35%-40% compared to a fwd RDX at less than 20% (more power=more stress on parts).

Very interesting, definitely keep us updated on how that turns out. You may also want to inspect the engine and transmission mounts...

Mrgold,

Sending all that torque thru ONE wheel having open diff.

Our only mod is a cold air intake mod, ducting air from an opened up d/s fog light grill.

Stay tuned...
