New Tranny sensors didn't fix 2000 TL

Hi,

My transmission ( 2000 Acura TL) hesitates starting out in gear. Took the car to the shop, the codes showed a Range Gear Position Switch and a Temp Sensor was needed to fix the problem. They were replaced ( four hours work?). The d5 light is still on and the dealer is telling me the transmission needs to be replaced. The recall on the transmission was good to 170,000K. The car has 220,000K. The car runs fine except for the hesitation getting into gear. Does anybody know if this problem will get worse? I can't foresee paying for a transmission change on a car that is nearly 9 years old.

Thanks

Ron

the trans failure often starts with delay engaging into Drive and progresses to slipping when accellerating- then flashing d5 light- then stoppage

You can talk with the service Manager at the dealer and ask for partial coverage under goodwill- 2500$ is what it will cost at the rebuiling shop anyway
acura gets 4 grand retail-

codes are not diagnosis--- they are clues to a problem and often give false leads!~
never go chasing parts on just what the codes say
A good tech knows how to interpret the symptoms and codes together

Thanks for the tips on the TL trans. I am waiting to hear back from Acura. I might be able to jump on the 2nd gear recall. I haven't had the car check at Acura for this issue.

If you mean the recall to install the external oil jet kit- that may save you
Just the extended warranty is gone now

What finally happened with your car? Was this delay in engaging gear happening only when the car was driven for some time?

I had similar symptoms a few days ago on my TL. 114K (miles) on first tranny. I am not seeing this anymore. Just wanted to know if I should take steps right away or wait for a while.
thanks.

Proceed to dealer quickly
Our -USA-gen2 trans extended warranty is to 7 years plus 9 months from date first sold- or 109,000 miles (whichever first)
BUT
there is also a court case where many gen2s are covered for extra 5% miles due to odometer reads fast- so thats 114,500 miles in usa cars
do a google search for the odometer settlement VIN numbers and see if you are in range

Thanks for the heads up 0104tl, I checked with dealers in my area. I am out of warranty (mine is a 2000 TL). I did not ask about the goodwill options yet. I have an after market warranty and am eager to give it a try (guardian warranty).

So far, I was not sure if I needed to do anything. After reading your message, I am quite confident that it is transmission issue. Will be going to some transmission garages in my area today/tomo.

does your aftermarket warranty give you acura coverage- as in the dealer
You dont want a transmission shop inside your trans- nooooo
Go to the dealer and show them what you have for coverage- they will happily test the trans and replace it if its bad~

unless you know the date the car was first sold-
you need to call acura 1-800-382-2238 x5 register as the cars owner and ask them the date
then count 7 years plus 9 months

No, I don't think my aftermarket warranty will cover dealer cost (since they are usually higher than regular mechanics). And I know that my Acura extended warranty expired Mar 2008.

I was considering an Aamco center nearby. I read somewhere in this forum that a guy got his TL's transmission replaced there.

check your policy carefully since this is not a basic repair

Acura will replace the entire trans assembly with a different unit that has been rebuilt- while aamco will take yours apart and rebuild it
