So last night temp has dropped down to 45 here in TN. I get the P/S whine and I hear it again this morning. So like I do whenever I have ?'s I come to Acurazine. After reading this thread I call the dealership, keep in mind A. my car is not under warranty B. I did not purchase from this dealership. They tell me they will replace the P/S hose and the O ring free of charge! And they will give me a free courtesy car. How about that for service??

Awesome.. 
Somewhat related, the last time I went to the serviceshop and picked up a loaner... I brought it back with a smashed in rear quarter panel. Some jerk sideswiped it while parked downtown.
Needless to say.. that was my last trip there. Hence the DIY's.

I just got mine yesterday by mail 0.97 cents change it 5 minutes and its working nice no ,more sound under my hood last week was 42 grades in chicago and the noise was really loud on my car but now all its fine great post i also made the switch for th stop light priceless works all perfect now thanks acurazine save me at least 300 dollars

Can someone clearly describe what this 'Power Steering Whine' sounds like? I think I might have encountered it weeks ago during the cool mornings. The mornings are now even cooler and I haven't heard it lately.

From the vid, it doesn't sound like I have this issue. The noise I hear is more of a BBBRRRRRRRRR-BBRRRRRRR sound. Almost like a vibrating/grinding sound?

Probably pulley related.. possible culprits timing belt idle pulley, tb or drivebelt auto tensioner.

I just had the dealership do this for me... but the whine still exists.
WTF? Did they play me for a fool and just wrote that they did it on my receipt? My car still makes the whining noise on cold/humid startups.
I am using amsoil power steering fluid... would that be causing the whining noise? Any suggestions? The whining noise is LOUD.

I would do the replacement yourself or at least remove the inlet hose and verify the new o-ring is there. If the inlet is clear of debris and the new o-ring is in fact installed, I would reseal the flow control valve with a new o-ring and cross your fingers.

The weather is starting to get a bit on the cooler side here in NM. Getting down to around 40* in the morning. And I noticed that my power steering was starting to whine. Thank God I looked on here first and did a search, and found this thread. After reading this, I went over to my local Handuh dealer, picked up one of these O-Rings, for next to nothing I might add ($1.39). Took it home, popped off the plastic cover in the engine bay, took off the hose, swapped out the rings, and five minutes later I was done. No joke, five minutes. The next morning, another cold morning, started her up, and no more whine.
This fix was so easy that I just can't understand how someone can take their car to the dealer to have this done. Thanks to the OP, and to the Community for being such a knowledgeable, and great bunch of people.

A dealership did my recall in July 2008. I started getting power steering whine on cold days last winter. The whine got worse this past month, so I bought a new PS inlet hose o-ring and just changed it this morning.
Lo and behold, the o-ring I pulled was a black one-- the current o-ring, and the one sent with the recall kits, was orange. The dealer tech didn't change the o-ring, for which I paid the princely sum of $1.18 including tax, at the time of the recall.

I am going to try this.
Question: Mine only whines (loud enough to hear) when I make sharp turns. Think it is the O rings? I asked Acura about it when I was getting my idler pully replaced. He looked up my VIN and said the hose had been replaced. Wonder if they replaced the O Ring also.

The o-ring on mine wasn't replaced with the orange/red one during the recall work. If it had been, it would have saved me a dollar and a few minutes of my time.

Mine also was not replaced during the recall work. The dealers probably made a small fortune (very small 
) re-selling all those orange o-rings from the recall kits that they didn't have to pay for... lol

Well, the O Ring has been replaced. I went ahead the put the new one on though.
Mine whines on sharp turns under acceleration. Fluid level looks fine, but I may do a flush.

So I went to the stealership a week or two ago (use my previous post as reference) I get there on time for my scheduled apointment and the guy gets my insurance info for loaner car etc. etc. Then tells me "ok we will call you when we know what it is" I say what do you mean "know what it is" we already know what it is and it's covered under the recall. He responds "oh your vin wasn't a part of the recall, but we will call you as soon as we find out what the problem is." My response is "like hell you will", I was told that this would be taken care of free of charge blah blah blah. I then go to the parts department buy the O ring for roughly 75 cents and replace it myself in under 5 minutes. He was going to charge me $100 just to do that. So for a couple of weeks all is well but today I hear the noise again. I have some Amsoil P/S fluid that I bought when I got my ATF fluid a few days ago. My question is if it is just a low P/S fluid level (haven't checked yet) which I feel that it is, can I just top it off with the Amsoil until I have a chance to flush the P/S system and change to Amsoil. Sorry for lengthy post thanks in advance for response.

Update: So as suspected the PS level was low. I topped it off with Amsoil and for the time all is well. If I have done something wrong by mixing the previous Honda PS with the Amsoil PLEASE let me know, but I don't see how it could do any harm. But then again I'm no mechanic and that is why I use this board as a valuable resource. Thanks,

2004 Acura TL
i tried to take the bolt off but it wouldn't come off because of the piece the timing belt is on being in the way. the wrench will not fit around the bolt all the way. any suggestions?

Otherwise, use a ratchet wrench with a u-joint/flexie. Just be careful when tightening-- use minimal effort with the ratchet.

I just used a standard wrench. Went underneath the belt to line it up. Granted I had to contort my hands a little differently, and could only move it a tiny bit at a time. Once you get it turned a few times should be able to remove the rest of the way with just your hands. The shorter the wrench the easier this will be as stated it doesn't take much to break it free. Lining it back up to put it back on was the hardest part for me, but the whole process should take less than 10 minutes. Good luck hope this helps. Do what I do, when I get frustrated I step back and take another look normally I can go at it a different way and it works.

You need a slightly offset wrench. It may not be clear but if you look at my pics you can tell my wrench is slightly offset. Just hit up your local harbor freight, autozone, sears and look for one.

I think most combo wrenchs (open end + box end) have the box end offset, i.e. angled off the handle.Otherwise, a shortie combo or box end will also work.

So the temp dropped to 29 a week or so ago and the car started making the whining noise on start up. I just replaced the o-ring today and flushed the fluid but the noise is still there. It's currently 20 degrees.
Any other suggestions?

Replaced mine last year during the winter and the noise went away...the past few weeks have been cold in the morning and it's starting again . I guess I'll replace it again and see if it goes away, cheap enough fix.

The bad hoses were the original reason for whining, and in several instances, leaking PS fluid.
if not, get the recall done ASAP (recall = free, even out of warranty.)
Check the hose clamps now if the hose recall was performed.
Otherwise, if the hose recall was already done, see if the problem persists after driving the car for three days. IDK if your low temps affect the elasticity or sealing of the new O-ring.
The bad hoses were the original reason for whining, and in several instances, leaking PS fluid.
if not, get the recall done ASAP (recall = free, even out of warranty.)
Check the hose clamps now if the hose recall was performed.
