Cracked XLR8 exhaust - IDEAS, SUGGESTIONS?

I have a 07 TL-S with an exhaust from XLR8 that is about two years and 40,000k miles old. I had it at Acura the other day and the mechanic noticed the exhaust is cracked pretty bad (Pics below). I have no idea how this would even happen and neither did the mechanic. He said it didn't look like I bottomed out because there are no scuff marks around it at all. Has this happened to anyone else? Couldn't find anything in search.

I am trying to decide between several different courses of action and was hoping to get some help picking the best option. Should I just take it to a custom muffler shop? I'm worried that they will not be able to fix it back to how it was properly, but not sure how badly broken it is.

Want to check here before I go and have some guy convince me he can fix it 100% for $500 or however much and then it either sounds totally different than the other muffler or just isn't fixed right.

Also, kind of considering just getting rid of it and going back to stock if it is too much of a hassle to fix. ANY ideas suggestions etc would be a great help. Thanks!

Is that the V1 or V2? Also have you contacted Josh at XLR8?

I have not contacted XLR8 and I am not sure if it is V1 or V2. Is there a way that I could tell by looking at it?

IIRC the V1 has no etching on the tip as the V2 does (should show XLR8)

Damn I am check mine out now

Anyway, I would contact Josh via email. Also, it seems that it started from the welding spots.

Unless you accidently hit something while backing up or debris went under the car whiling driving??

Should I contact XLR8? Not sure what they would do in this situation. This has really never happened to anyone else?

Wow.. I did not even think of that. Both of the cracks look like they start from the welding. Thanks! I will contact XLR8 now

Find a welding shop, then paint them with black header paint so don't stand out. Shouldn't be too much to get it fixed/patched.

That definitely looks like something hit it, unless it's just the angle but in the second picture it looks like its bent downward on the right side of the shot. Which would suggest something hit it, dug in and tore off that little section. Mufflers just don't break like that without some kind of outside influence, from what I can see it doesn't look like XLR8 will be able to do much of anything.

I'd take it to a muffler shop, by the looks of things they should be able to patch the hole and weld the crack shut. I'd be very surprised if they charge you over $75 to fix it, unless there's more damage than the photos are showing.

Emailed Josh at XLR8 and he put me in contact with the fabricator whom he said usually covers replacement even though the warranty has expired. Hope this works out for the best!

Thanks again to EvilVirus for pointing out the obvious to me and recommending that I contact Josh.

Have never backed into anything and it doesn't appear that anyone ever backed into me.. exhaust tips and surrounding area are fine.

And I doubt it's from debris I ran over, but that's the most likely thing I've heard so far. Very confused how it happened and the manner in which it happened (split on both ends). I'll update when I find out more.

No problem.

Well hopefully you get a good deal. If not I would look around for a good shop to weld it back.

You did NOT hit anything.

My friend (DarkNite) texted me like last year about how his XLR8 muffler "exploded".

His muffler looked exactly likes yours, so you're not the only one.

He contacted XLR8 and they took care of him.

Hah wow good to know I'm not the only one at least. Just curious does he live in Canada too? I kinda thought it might have been caused by the heat, but if it happened in Canada too then it must be something else.

Still haven't heard back from Billy Boat, but I'll post the final outcome incase this ends up happening to more people.

I also have the XLR8 V1 exhaust and contacted Josh about one of the mufflers- it sounds like something is loose inside the muffler and between 2000-2500 RPM it sounds like old civic. Josh said that he can have the muffler rebuild for $250

You guys are scaring me now. I just placed a order for a new XLR8 exhaust earlier this week.

I'm hoping these are isolated incidents. I have no idea how many exhausts they have sold since they started making them, so it is hard to say how common this issue is.

no need to worry about this exhaust, it's a very well designed and manufactured exhaust and you shouldn't have issues with it. when i talked to josh it was a very isolated issue based on all the exhausts he's sold to us (quite a bit).

great product nonetheless

i had a similar issue and it's something internal to the muffler that came apart. he replaced it under warranty, as usual per his great customer service.

^mine is one of the first done back in 2009- it's out of warranty and either I have to ship it to him to have it rebuild or Josh said I can buy 1 muffler for $350
I read somewhere here on AZine that the new mufflers have different internal design and are resonated. Can anyone confirm this

Maybe I should have gone with Richie RV6 Performance- he is local and don't have to ship nothing nowhere. Don't get me wrong- the XLR8 exhaust sounds amazing but for the past 2-3 months I have old civic only between 2000-2500 RPM

The newer version that I have is a different design and has purge resonance technology to reduce drone. I picked xlr8 because I felt it had the least drone out of all the exhausts. And it sounds great

So I still have not heard back from Billy Boat after Josh told me to contact them. Getting somewhat frustrated, but I will be patient for now.

Like tihomirbg said, it sounds like an old civic around 2000-2500 rpms. It sucks because I used to love driving around with this exhaust, but now I am considering just going back to stock.

^same here- used to like driving around just so I can listen to the sound it makes- now I try to go around that 2000-2500K sound- but sometimes it doesn't work.

Sockr1- since there is a difference in terms of design between V1 and V2- do you think the sound between the new muffler and the old muffler will be so different that one might say- only the old muffler is make a sound -

I wouldn't worry, OP's exhaust is an aberration. Providing op's is a manufacture defect (and he didn't run over or back into something, etc that caused his exhaust to crack) It really is extremely rare for an XLR8 product to fail.

Hey guys sorry I was out of town on business and this whole ordeal was out of mind. Before I left, I was in touch with Mike from Billy Boat and it seemed like he was going to replace the exhaust (though he hadn't quite said that exactly at that point).

However, since I have been back, I have responded to his email with no response and sent multiple other emails. This morning, I sent my final email to him in hopes that he didn't see the others and we can finally get this worked out.

While I hope this happens, I have a feeling that he is just going to ignore this email as well. If this is the case, I will be dropping this shitty exhaust off at the junk yard and buying a new stock exhaust from an OEM supplier. I am beyond displeased with the quality of this product and the customer service I have received thus far.

I will update at the end of the week with what transpires.

Like I said, I didn't deal with Billy Boat but with Josh from XLR8- he answered all my questions- I was hoping that he can work something out since I have his product even though it's out of warranty. Maybe I send him my old messed up muffler and I buy new one from him- but charge me prorated price
He can still fix my old muffler and sell it

Okay so today I heard back from Billy Boat and the only reason I wasn't getting a response is because the one person I was emailing has been out of the office at a car show. The guy I am in contact with now said that he will help me replace the product.

Seems like it was all just a misunderstanding at this point thankfully. I just got in touch with him today though, so the part is far from replaced. I will make sure to update when everything is sorted out.
