How much does an oil change cost?
 

I tried searching all over the forums.. but no luck..
so my 2007 TL-S is due for an A1 service (oil change i gues). how much would it cost to get a basic oil change? I think my acura dealership is charging about 30 dollars.. is it okay to get tat? and is it okay to get an oil change at a honda dealership or other stores like sears auto and pep boys?

Around here, 30 dollars is about average.

Yeah, it's just an oil change.
The only thing that matters is what oil they put in your car (and filter).

Any place that deals with cars know how to change oil (Dealership, Wal-Mart, Midas, etc).

If you can, do it yourself =)
My oil changes cost more than $30, though because of what I use (Synthetic Mobil 1).

An oil change is about 24.99 and sometimes they will give it for 19.99 depending on the dealer. You can go to your honda dealer for an oil change as well but I suggest you give a copy of the invoice to your acura dealer as well to make sure that they have it in their records


I wouldn't go to pepboys or another place since they do some VERY shady stuff all the time like not even changing the oil, leaving in the old filter, etc.

At least by going to honda or acura you have piece of mind that you are dealing with a big dealership in the event something goes wrong, and as well acura will have a record of the oil changes and such if you ever need a goodwill repair.

I've been taking my car to Goodyear since new and trust them completely. My oil change is ~ $17 with me providing the M1 oil and filter. You should scope out a garage you trust and stick with them. In general, use the dealership for more specialized work (like the timing belt/ water pump service) or warranty repairs.

if i wasnt on this forum.. i woulda had to spend about 80 dollars for a freaking oil change.. thatz what the gas station mechanic wanted to charge me...

if you're going to use a dealer check their websites for service specials.

I buy my oil and filter and go to different shops to get my oil change.

Almost all of them charge $15 if I bring my own oil and filter. I buy synthetic 5W-20 motor oil from walmart for about $20 for the 5 quart jug and only use the purolator pure one oil filter which sells for about $8.

i pay $30 but they rotate my tires too.... this is at a local shop

i do it myself. mobil 1 synthetic at walmart for ~$20 + fram filter ~$6

However, I am going to school for engineering in the fall... i love this sorta stuff.

Can't trust anyone these days, that why I change my own oil. It gives me peace of mind too. Walmart has the best prices too

I work at an Acura dealer and We charge $24.99 for an oil change.

good luck. i am a mechanical engineering major in UCR right now. engineering may seem fun but trust me it will be a lot of work, especially when it comes to your upper division engineering courses.

Thanks you. Im actually thinking about mechanical as well. Maybe software? It will be a lot of work, but im always up to a good challange. And hopefully a great job in the future that could get me that type-s ;)

Not only this, but it doesn't hurt to check competitor's websites and see if they'll price match.

Changing oil isnt fun at all...i know because i just changed mines and found out the damn oil drain bolt was torqued too damn tight...ugh in 95 degree weather !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...added 20 mins to my oil change time(trying to break my old record)...and why does acura have the oil filter right on top of the damn control arms!!!

I'm glad my bro a Acura Master Tech :thumbsup: so I get all my oil changes done by him. Just need to buy him lunch. :yum:

It's easy to get to the oil filter; just turn your wheels all the way to the right.

its simply not worth the hassle, mess, and disposal for me. $20 at my trusted mechanic, i supply all the oil/filter.

Simple and easy. If you don't know how to or too lazy to do your own oil change then you shouldn't own a TL. :)

I told you that the hands on stuff is my jam! And just dont torque it so hard next time. (I know, duhh right?) I cant remember what the correct ft/lbs is, but for something as simple as an oil drain bolt, its not that overly important...

It's 29 ft/lbs or 360 in/lbs (360 is easier to set than 348).

30 is not bad, but make sure they change the filter as well

Placement of the filter on the TL is a horrible location IMO. My previous car 350z the oil filter was right on the side of the oil pan, it was easy breezy. The TL when taking off the oil filter it's impossible not to get oil all over the filter itself + dripping everywhere. I agree its not really worth the hassle doing it..but I do it anyways bc I don't trust people touching my car.

I'm paying $85 to do it myself. 6 quarts of redline 10W30 at $12 a quart and a $15 royal purple or amsoil filter. Expensive but good insurance. $2 a quart oil not worth it. Changing your oil does have draw backs interms of getting rid of it without spilling it all over but it's worth it to avoid shady mechanics. It's also very easy to do.

i bring my own mobil 1 oil and filter to a gas station and pay about $10 for them to change it. i watch them do it just in case they decide to steal my oil and give me something else.

It's not impossible. I never have this problem. What I do, thanks to a tip years ago from Road Rage, is put a 1-gallon Ziplock bag over the old filter, up to and over the pickup arm as well, after I have loosened the filter enough to finish removing it by hand. When the filter comes off, the residual oil goes into the Ziplock bag, not on me, the suspension, or my driveway.

No muss, no fuss.

I stopped getting oil changes at small garages after the last one stripped the oil plug and didn't even change the filter when they were supposed to. That was years ago, and I learned my lesson. If you want it done right, do it yourself. I get pretty OCD with it now...after I've drained all the old oil, I'll pour in about 1/2 a quart of fresh oil and just let it drain through and rinse out any remaining old oil from the bottom of the oil pan....and I ALWAYS use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to the correct spec.

Back when I had a Montero Sport, one of those big chains didn't put my skid plate back on. I noticed later on that day when I was walking back to the car, so I went back over there and sure enough, they had the skid plate. I gave them the benefit of the doubt that it was a one-time mistake. The very next time I went there for an oil change afterwards I double checked under the car for the skid plate and it was there, but 4 of the 8 bolts were missing. I hadn't left yet and asked them where my other 4 bolts were. They had them and put them back on for me. I then concluded that they were just being lazy. I've never been back there.
