Partial refund for vehicle registration (End of lease)
 

My TL's lease of 3.5 years is coming to an end in 7 months, and I'm about to pay for my 4th year of vehicle registration to good ol' DMV of California. But it's no small change: close to $250.

Since I'm returning the car to American Honda Finance Corp only after using it for 6 months during this 4th year of registration, am I entitled to any refund for the rest of 6 months? Does anyone know? If yes, from which entity--AHFC or DMV?

Yep. It can be expensive to own cars in CA. If you think $250 is a lot. Back when Arnold became govenor, he repealed the car registration hike which made that $250 registration $750. :what:

The people in our state government do not know how to manage money properly. We have some of the highest taxes and fees and a large taxable population but our schools, roads, public services, etc. are some of the worst in the nation. :annoyed:

And I complain about $30 for my plate each year...at least I can legitimately complain about the car taxes at three hundred some odd dollars.

I'm assuming when you say "vehicle registration" you mean your plate. If so, you should be able to just pay a transfer fee to put the plate on your next car.

In NY you can transfer your plates to your new car and I believe keep all your months. I am sure there is a fee to transfer but, its fairly small compared to a 2 year new registration. It also goes by weight too I believe so might have to pay the difference. I had the dealer transfer my plates from my old car to my TL.

I also believe in NY if you are not transfering the reg you can only get back one year (if more then 12 months are remaining).

Yes, I was talking about the plate by "vehicle registration." Well... more like the little "2008" sticker that goes ON the plate...

I didn't think about the option of transferring the plate to my next car. That should save me some money, if CA DMV allows it. Thanks folks.

Does California still issue the plates to the car and not the owner? I remember years ago (1986) buying a used car from someone and I kept the tags on the car that they had.

I believe it's still the same way.
