Radio Won't Power On after Jump-start (Not Asking for Code)

Hi guys,

I'd appreciate some help on this. I have a 2006 Acura TL base model (non-navi).

I left my car parked for a week while away on vacation. When I got back and tried to turn the car on, I realized the battery had died.

I got some help from my dad to jump-start the car, but I don't think the way he did it was correct. First of all, he connected the +/+ like normal but he also connected -/-. However, I read in the manual afterwards that you are not supposed to connect the the - cable to dead battery but are supposed to ground it to the engine block. Anyways, the way my dad did it worked and my car was up and running.

However, after driving it around for a few minutes, I realized that the radio was not turning on. The climate control works fine and shows on the lcd screen, however pushing the power button for the radio does nothing. It doesn't even ask for a radio code. I'm not sure what could be causing this and would appreciate some suggestions.

Pull fuse #7 for one minute (with car off), then put it back in. Then check the radio, it should ask for the code now.

Hi speed 02-27-2011 09:25 PM

Pushing the volume button should get it to request the code.

I just got the same problem this past weekend on 2005 TL w/Navi. Had to get it jumped and afterwards the radio does not turn on. Pushing the volume button is trying to turn on the radio and it does nothing.

Anyone ever get to the bottom of this? Thanks.

franklinhid 05-02-2011 02:12 PM

have you checked the fuse?!?

EATSLEEPRACE 05-02-2011 06:45 PM

Check fuse...it happened to me

bump!! anyone find the answer to this?!

jokerman826 09-17-2011 07:40 AM

Did you check the fuse? What have you done to try and fix this.

mrconnecticut 09-17-2011 11:56 AM

i checked the fuses and tried unplugging the battery again

osvaldo516 07-29-2013 06:31 PM

this just happened to me as well, pulling fuse #7 didn't work, I also swapped with spare radio and nothing either

dcmodels 07-30-2013 01:42 AM

This may not be very helpful - but ...

my RDX OM (owner manual) specifically states that the radio must the turned OFF when jump starting, as well as any other accessories (like what?). The OM does not indicate what may happen, but I have found such *warnings* to be given for a reason. You might at least check the TL OM for any similar warnings when jump starting.

Assuming that the radio itself is not damaged, I can only suggest checking all related fuses (or all of them), and try tracing the related wiring for any heat damage - sorry, that is all I can suggest, other than check with the dealer for any similar problems that they may have encountered.

And with the age of this thread, seems like someone would have found an answer by now

2006 TL navi - jump started and radio works intermitently

I have a somewhat similar problem with my 2006 TL navi manual trans: I had to jump-start the car in August, and since then, while the radio/cd/tape works, the buttons do not respond every time. It sometimes takes me at least 4 repeated pushes on the power button (or tape, or radio) to have it respond and turn the audio on or off. Some other times, but rarely, the buttons work OK. The volume works OK every time, both on the wheel and using the knob. Also, the +/-buttons to change the CDs do not work as they should, i.e. sometimes I do get the CD changed, some other times pushing the +/- button just pauses the CD from playing...
I will try unplugging the fuse and/or unplugging the battery. Any other ideas?

Hi,
I have on '07 tl with nav and had the same problem. I pulled fuse 7... After replacement the nav asked me for a code not the radio. Any other suggestions? My radio is still not turning on or asking me for the radio code. The red theft light is flashing....

kristineregine 02-02-2014 06:42 PM

hey mseason, this happened to me after a jump. The nav screen will ask for a code to power up the nav but the radio is separate. You have to enter your code that is hopefully in your manual. To do this you need to use the buttons below the cassette player, you will notice they are numbered. Hopefully you have the code!

Franco_acura 08-22-2014 06:16 PM

Help

So I un-plugged fuse #7 and my radio asked for a code again, problem is, when I start typing in my code the radio shuts off. Idk what to do!!!

There is a radio security code (entered using the pre-set buttons) and a separate code for the Navi (if so equipped, using the touchscreen) required to use the radio and Navi.
Codes are on a plastic business card that comes with the paperwork and owner's manual package. If you don't have those, check for a sticker with 4 or 5 digits on the side of the glove compartment, or written on top of the under-hood fuse box.

Otherwise, you can get the code from an Acura dealer by giving it the VIN and radio serial number.

Make sure your looking at the right screen, it will ask for the code on the screen that displays time and ac functions, not the navi screen. You use the present buttons to enter the code for the radio.

ts_havoc 08-01-2015 03:58 PM

I'm in the same situation. I've pulled the fuse and let sit for 5 minutes with the car off. I've even disconnected the head unit completely. I have a non navi and the temp controls show up just fine, but not the radio code screen. The only thing that's working is the anti-theft light is flashing. I have no clue what to do! Some serious help would be appreciated.

Could someone please tell me where the fuse is for the radio and display screen is please.

There are a bunch to check:

Under hood in relay box #22, 23 and 15
Under dash: #32, 5, 7

altaz2016 10-20-2015 10:20 AM

ok. Thank you. I will try that. I opened that fuse box yesterday. Just couldn't figure out which one was 7 lol.

Oh wow ok. My issue has been trying to identify the actual fuses. I will try this today when I get off work though. My truck was jump started yesterday which caused the issue I am assuming. So my Display screen is bland and no radio. It doesn't even ask for the codes, I do have them.

polish_pat 10-20-2015 10:26 AM

when you open the compartment door, you should see an image of the fuses and their number

You're in the subforum for 3rd generation TLs

or check your owners manual for the proper fuses. Even if you go under, you should see a diagram that shows you which fuse is which

2002 Acura TL - Checked fuses still no power to radio or anti-theft

I jumped my car and the radio or anti theft wouldn't turn on afterwords leaving no power to either. I replaced both ACC fuses and still nothing is working. The one thing that does work after disconnecting the fuses is the CD player as I can hear it shuffling discs. Anyone have any ideas?

2006 Acura TL-Navi Battery Died-Security Code

I've had the same problem with a dead battery every time my car is parked for over 3 days. It started at the airport on business trips. My recommendation is to have a portable jumper in the car. It is the safest thing to do.
I had the dealer do an electrical check and they could not find any issues. Believe me the problem is real.
The security codes are in the glove compartment or owners manual. (My car did not have owners manuals). The 4 digit number is the security code for the Navigation system, the 5 digit number is the security code for the radio. If they don't work the following two suggestions should work:

* Remove the #7 Fuse as suggested on this web site. (That has worked for me once).
* Unplug the battery so all is dead again and start over. Navigation first then the radio.

Good Luck
Michael-Antioch Calif.

Could be a long shot, but my son had that issue in his '97 Accord, after a jump start, no radio. He drove it around like that a month or so, then needed another jump so we replaced the battery. Then his radio started working again and did the rest of the time he had the car. Don't know if there is anything in the ECU that maybe selectively turns stuff off when you have a constantly weak battery?

Radio not working (have code, but screen won't request it)

Hey Everyone,

I've got a 2006 Acura TL with navigation. I got a new battery and now the radio doesn't work. I put in the navigation code, but no code popped up on the frequency area (where the clock/climate info is) for me to input the radio code. I've tried pushing the volume button to turn the radio on, to get it to request the code, and nothing. I've tried pushing the 1 and 6 presets with the volume knob all at once for a second, then tried again with holding them, nothing. I've tried removing the fuse #5 (20) under the driver's wheel for radio, as well as the fuse for "backup" (7.5) which then re-prompted me to input the code for navi. But no matter what I push (whether I try to eject a CD, eject the tape in the tape player, push the AM/FM or XM buttons), and no matter which fuse I pull out, nothing make the radio code prompt pop up. I took it to the Acura dealership, and they told me that they would charge $180 just to do a diagnostic. I know there's some silly fix though, so I'm hoping one of you has the answer.

Now, here's something I think could be affecting it. I live in Hawaii, and 2006 and older model Acuras have navigation systems that don't work in Hawaii (neither does the XM radio, but we just have to suck it up). So even though I can put in the code for the navigation, and the navigation screen pops up, it never gets around to asking for the radio code because it's possibly trying to locate the vehicle and can't.

The only two things I haven't tried yet are going into an underground garage, or unplugging the antenna and replugging it back in.

TL;DR

2006 Acura TL with Navi. Got a new battery, have serial number and codes for navi and radio. Frequency display (where the climate control and clock are) won't prompt for radio code. Navigation accepts navi code, but I'm in Hawaii so it can't locate me. Pushing volume/audio/AMFM/XM/Tape/CD does nothing. Pushing 1 and 6 on presets along with volume knob does nothing. Tried swapping out fuses under dash.

mollyloveblue2002 10-05-2016 01:27 AM

Also, it doesn't say ERR nor does it say CO or CODE or anything.

thoiboi 10-05-2016 08:25 AM

Have you tried unplugging the battery, waiting 5 minutes, and plugging it back in?
