he got rid of his whining sound by changing some gaskets... just wondering if anyone else has pursued this and if they've gotten rid of their whine.

what is the diff between a short block and long block?

You guys don't hear that whine when you're going at 58 mph and a little above?

Nope. Are you sure it isn't just wind noise? My dad's Sebring has major wind noise around 60mph. It's extremely annoying and loud as heck.

long block = engine + transmission
short block = engine

you can hear the whine with any type of pressure on the gas pedal. if you take it off, the whine disappears completely.

I have the same whining noise. Just step on the gas a little bit and it will make that noise.

I could be wrong, but I believe long block is engine block + head and short block is just the engine block.

you're right

Short block = the engine block without the head (block casting, pistons, rods, crank, etc.)
Long block = the complete engine, including the head (engine from valve cover to oil pan)

I have 120+k miles in my car. There is no problem but some noises. So, I will just let it be. In a matter of fact, the noise has been there ever since I bought the car in 2003. So, if something was going to burn up or blow up or die on me, I would not be running my car over 120+ thousands of miles for the past 4 years.

So, I will not worry about it at all.

I have a scheduled maintenance in about 3000 miles. That should take about one or two months. Since I recently had my upper control arm replaced, I have yet to get my free wheel alignment due to their machine breaking down. I'll speak to the service department about it when they give me a call back. I never brought it up to them before because I thought it was normal. Are you guys sure it doesn't make the high pitching whining noise when going above 58? It's very faint.

It sounds like a high pitched electronic whining noise, but it also happens even if the radio is off. And it varies with RPM and throttle position.

yip and apparently the guy in the post i referred to got rid of it with just a few gasket replacements

update: I called rallye acura and asked them about the problem on the phone -- they said it sounds like a problem with something in the final drive and will be glad to look at it. I made an appointment for monday morning -- will keep you guys updated.

at first the guy at the counter said it might be a final drive issue, but once the mechanic saw it, he came out and told me that this is common with 04's and 05's and there's nothing wrong with it. o well guess i'll get used to it.

Ive driven 3 diff 04s and 05s all had a slight whine when i generously applied the gas ,I thought it was just a normal engine sound ?

Yea i get it on mine too even when i first bought the car i was like why is there a whine. I thought it was normal in all tsx.

i had this problem in my swapped hatch before i got the tsx, i believe its in the final drive.

might be the catalytic convertor?

I love my baby, but I'm so sick and tired of the problems. This whining noise, that mystery shake in the body, and all the fucking rattles that keep appearing.

I got an exhaust and I rarely hear it now....=]

I may know what you guys mean. Yesterday with the stereo off, I heard a very faint whine sound at 3000 RPM. But it didn't seem to "suddenly happen," nor did it sound unusual. Simple intake sound. As it wasn't remarkable, I wasn't bothered by it. Maybe on others' cars, it's really noticeable, in which I'd suspect a bad gasket, seal, or some other component on the intake or manifold systems.

I have that. It is the person in my passenger seat telling me to slow down...

I am looking at the brochure. It says that the intake header has a valve to restrict the air in low speed. The valve will open wider in higher speed. Will that be the sound coming from when the valve is opening and closing inside the intake header?

so I had some extra time this morning and decided to bring my car to a local shop that specializes in hondas. One of the mechanics rode with me and believed the noise was coming from the transmission. Got the head mechanic who recommended that I just wait because without a TSB finding the cause of that sound would be like finding a needle in a haystack. He said the only way to do it would be to rebuild or get a new transmission.


So, my plan going forward is to call as many acura service departments as possible to see if anyone has actually figured out what this problem is... I can't be the only person out there driven insane by this noise... I'll update this thread as I call more places...

Any updates? I noticed that the whine actually enters the cabin at the shifter. Giv eit a shot and put your ear next to the shifter next time you're parked on a quiet street.

I had this noise after i came back from vacation. About a week later, my tranny died. Just got the car back with a replacement tranny and no more whining.

This is a 05 AT with 43,000km.

I drove an extra 20 miles today to get my 30k service done at Smithtown Acura in Long Island. In addition to the standard stuff, they convinced me to get new tires and change my rear brakes. I told them about this whining noise, without any expectation of them actually trying to fix it. Well, surprise! Long story short they're gonna replace my tranny... they said it's definitely coming from the final drive, but there's really no way of knowing whats wrong without opening up the tranny. These guys are definitely the best Acura shop in the NYC area and I would recommend them over Rallye Acura any day, especially when it comes to service and maintenance. Anyway, I'm going on vacation for a week and when I come back the replacement tranny is gonna be here and I'm very hopefully that this problem will finally be solved =D

sorta sounds like a supressed supercharger ( not really...)

PS. does anyone know what exactly entails a refurbed transmission? will the thing die on me in 10k miles?

I believe it's just a used case with all new internals. It comes the factory in Japan that built it originally so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

I know this has nothing related to the performance of the car (I thought it did at first), but I noticed that if you have the radio set to the AUX setting with the volume up pretty loud while my iPod connected (not playing), it makes a funny whine when you step on the gas, and it sounds like it's from the engine compartment. It's weird.

Is your Ipod connected to the power source? If it is, then all you need is a ground loops isolator to prevent that from happening.
