Dealer won't honor recall work because I have rebuilt title

So I went to the Acura dealership to have the power steering hose recall performed on my car today and the service guy told me that they cant honor the recall because my car has a rebuilt/salvage title and that they cant do anything about it but that I have to pay out of pocket to have the hose replaced. Is this correct guys and input would be appreciated.

cdp5095 01-31-2012 07:55 PM

thats not true. I have the a rebuilt title and they performed the recall for me. the lady at acura called Acura Headquarters or somewhere higher and they gave her the ok to charge it under the recall warranty. go back and tell them to call Acura for you .

sparkleRed 01-31-2012 08:00 PM

same here I got my recall work done despite having a rebuilt title, it was never questioned. If I were you I'd call acura

JL-Type-S 01-31-2012 08:00 PM

When was this recall? I got my car a few months ago.

godfather18 01-31-2012 08:01 PM

Really? What if I call Acura Corp. and tell them about what that dealer told me? Man that really pisses me off that they lied to me like that!!!

godfather18 01-31-2012 09:21 PM

Any ideas on how I should handle this when I call Acura Corp.? Should I be angry or polite and firm?

cinobyte 01-31-2012 09:27 PM

Always start out nice .... i think that's bs though since the salvage could have been because of rear end damage and the recall could be a power steering hose in the front of the car.

I wouldn't say that you were lied to, typically all warranty/recall related work goes out the door with a salvage or rebuilt title. Your asking Acura to do you a favor, I would kiss up heavily as they do not have to in any which way to replace the hose.

Salvage is salvage, whether it be front, side, rear, top, etc. Theirs no 2 ways about it.

wojo1988 01-31-2012 10:58 PM

^ agreed, salvage title kills warranties usually. Also its cheap enough to do yourself and if you have an american car and bring it to canada you lose warranty and if you bring a canadian car to america you lose warranty.

The ps hose issue is a SAFETY RECALL, not warranty. Safety recalls still apply on salvage titles AFAIK.

Exactly.

It is against the law in all 50 states to stop a recall cause of its title status. Warranty is fine, just not safety recalls. If something was to happen, they could get sued for a lot of money.

From the Acura site:
If my vehicle has a branded or “Salvage” title, is the warranty still valid?
Vehicles with titles that have been branded as salvaged, scrapped, or dismantled are no longer covered by the new car warranty, with the exception of some emissions warranties and safety recalls. For further information regarding the branding of vehicle titles, please contact your state’s department of motor vehicles.

TLtrigirl 02-01-2012 07:28 AM

always be polite and firm if you want something. getting mad and raising hell doesn't do you any favors. i dont' like it when people fly off the handle when it comes to money or when getting something. it makes me a whole lot less inclined to want to help out.

godfather18 02-01-2012 08:36 AM

Ok guys I called Acura Corp. and they told me that the recall work is still valid even on a rebuilt/salvage vehicle! The only thing thats voided is warrenty work, recalls are a safety issue and by law have to be completed on the car no matter the branding on title. So I called the dealer back and spoke to the service manager and he told me that he is going to call Acura and get the ok from them to have the recalls performed and can get me in tomorrow morning!

Azndjay 02-01-2012 09:10 AM

nice work to stick it to the stealership!

Good deal. If I were you, I'd find time to pull the Service Manager aside (in person) and politely but firmly remind him that his department violated federal law by initially refusing the safety recall and that you'd like his reassurance that he has taken the necessary steps to inform his personnel so that this doesn't happen to someone else.

coykiam 02-01-2012 09:39 AM

...and make sure it's in writing. Remember service advisors are just like sales people.

godfather18 02-01-2012 11:22 AM

Ok fellas I just dropped my car off at the dealer and they are performing the recall work and they gave a 2011 Acura TL as a loaner for two days!!!!! Cheers!!!

HEAVY_RL 02-01-2012 12:26 PM

No offense to any service writers, but they are just the front line, not the final word.

Congrats OP.

quanaman 02-01-2012 12:42 PM

That dealer is an idiot.

IF they were smart, they would do everything they could to do the job for you, including calling Acura and working it out. They actually bill Acura for the work, so to them its easy free money.

They did mine, and even helped get Acura to pay for a replacement power steering pump...somehow blamed it on the hose.

I would have gone to another dealer...But I'm glad its working out for you

TheChamp531 02-01-2012 02:15 PM

Glad everything worked out

LoveMyTL-S 02-01-2012 03:24 PM

Awesome news that they are taking care of "their" recall. I hope the job is done right. Enjoy the 4g TL. Does your TL need any other recalls?

TSB 08-013: Saftey Recall: Windshield Wiper Motor Does Not Work

Background

A breather port on the windshield wiper motor vents warm air from the wiper motor during operation. If water enters the breather port, it can cause corrosion that could make the wiper motor stop working. A non-operating wiper motor increases the risk of a crash in certain conditions.

TSB 07-017: Safety Recall: Fuel Pump Relay May Cause Engine No-Start or Stalling

Background

A manufacturing fault with the fuel pump relay (PGM-FI Main Relay 2) could cause a coil wire inside the relay to break. If this happens, the fuel pump will not operate and the engine may not start. If the relay fails while driving, the engine may stall without warning and a crash could occur.

TSB 05-043: Safety Recall: Right Front Impact Sensor Is Loose

Background

On some 2006 TLs, the bolts on the right (passenger’s side) front impact sensor were not properly torqued. If the bolts loosen or fall out, the sensor may fail to properly detect a crash, possibly resulting in delayed or non-deployment of the passenger's airbag.

TSB 05-013: Safety Recall: Fuse Box May Cause a No-Start or Stalling Condition

Background

A loose terminal in the under-dash fuse/relay box may cause the fuel pump to lose power. If the fuel pump becomes inoperative, the engine may not start. In the worst case, if the fuel pump loses power while driving, the engine could stall without warning, and a crash could occur.

I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who come onto a forum and spew utter BS as factual.

(And I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who read said BS and assume it to be factual without a second thought.)

Please, for some of you, next time do a little research before you come on here (or anywhere) and tell someone he's not eligible to get his safety recall done.

That is all.

godfather18 02-04-2012 11:57 AM

Ok guys just got my car back and they did all the open recalls on the car and they also replaced the power steering pump and used the hose recall to replaced the pump and they degreesed my engine bay and detailed the car for me :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Very happy and the loaner was amazing but I still hate that grill on the Gen 4

callahan 02-04-2012 12:04 PM

Free detail? Nice! I hope their Detailer knows how to work a buffer bc most of them don't lol

TheChamp531 02-04-2012 12:10 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. You let the dealer clean your car. Fuck your life. You will see about 10000 swirls later. oerinreiotnerwtrette

+1....don't ever let the dealer wash or detail your car. just b/c it's free doesn't mean you have to take it.

+2 that why every time when my vehicle got service from dealer I always say "no car wash please!" I don't want any more scratch on the car lol.

jferr333 09-21-2016 07:12 PM

Having a salvage title has no effect on recall work, what having a salvage title does is void the factory warranty on the car I just found out the hard way.

Yes. Yes, this was covered at least four time prior. In this thread. In 2012.

Safety recalls, YES. Warranty work, it's up to the dealer, but probably not.

LMK.

Depends where you bought it. If you bought it in Mexico and paid for it in pesos, I'm pretty sure they have to.
