Question About Lower Ball Joints
Hey guys. I bought a pair of lower ball joints from my local shop. Do lower ball joints usually come with a castle nut and cotter pin?
These have neither. Just the ball joint and grease. Does it matter? http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/8128/18693240jl2.jpg |
I don't remember, but on another Honda that I did ball joints on, I think I reused the original nut.
I can't tell what brand ball joints those are, but I highly recommend Spicer Professional or Moog ball joints. |
I see it has a lock nut. Id still rather have a cotter pin. Is there a hole in the ball joint for the pin? maybe reuse the OE nut?

|
Castle nuts used w/ cotter pins.
|
just buy it from the dealer, they arent expensive at all, and the ones from the dealer comes with new cotter pins, just gotta reuse the nut, but thats no biggy, and remember there is a special tool to put the ball joint back in without ruining the boot.

Thanks for all your help guys. |
Your balljoint comes with the secure nut, that is why the balljoint was not designed with a hole for the pin. You can see the white plastic in the nut.
|
it should come with the nut and pin
|
I actually just did mine the other weekend and yes they came with a new castle nut and new cotter pin. I don't remember what brand they were but I got them from my local auto part store, Napa.
|
Ok, cool. Thanks for all your responses. Much appreciated.
I just went ahead and returned these. Then I bought a pair of OEM Honda Ball joints just to safe. About the same price also. |
actually the dealerships DO sell just the lower ball joints by itself, the part number is 04510-s84-000 trust me, i work at honda, it comes in a kit...

Did you guys see this thread? https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/i-have-creaky-squeak-left-front-suspension-any-ideas-633975/
Apparently there is a tsb here: http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/B06-015.PDF The tsb shows the ball joint is 06523-S84-405. Which one is right 06523-S84-405 or 04510-s84-000 . Are they the same thing? One is Acura other is Honda P/N??? I'm pretty sure because it looked pressed in, and I don't see a B (but not sure where to look), but I might as well ask - This one is replaceable right? http://home.comcast.net/%7Elorenzana...3/DSC_1192.JPG TACURA, if you want, and if it's the right part, you can find them online: http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine...3-S84-405.html |
The shop manual doesn't seem to suggest replacing the lower ball joint, but rather the whole knuckle assembly. The ball joint certainly is replaceable after the knuckle assembly is removed from the car. The Moog ball joint has the snap ring, castle nut, and cotter pin. I would use a type with a castle nut.
|
Did you read the TSB? It shows that ball joints not stamped with B can be one time replaced. The TSB also says to use P/N 06523-S84-405, but Aznfury mentioned something about P/N 04510-s84-000 so not sure which to get.

Just to close the loop for someone in the future...
I went and bought P/N 06523-S84-405 from eBay and it fit great. These new ball joints do have the letter B stamped on them. The originals do not have a B so that's how they keep track. Pressed them in/out with a rental too from Advanced Auto Parts. Autozone one only had 3 tubes that didn't work. Advanced kit was Alltrade 940579 (10 piece kit) which worked much better. Maybe not essential but take off the boot b4 pressing the old one out. Lower ball joint separated from lower control arm via 1-1/16 tie rod separator tool. 1-1/8 one I used first kept slipping off because it was just a tad too wide. |
Just bought some Moog lower ball joints, and redoing a lot of suspension parts in a few days. Is it suggested that I replace the lower control arms while my mechanic is down there?
03 TL-S 130,000 original everything. |

That Knukle looks Dangerously Rusted, You should replace it instead of the Ball Joint.

Look where his ball joint sits on top, It isnt even.
If I were him I would be more concern about that, than the Ball Joint Itself. But thats Me.

I gotta disagree. Looks like cosmetic, surface rust to me. You'd have to lose a lot of material from that casting before it became unsafe.
|
Yeah, I didn't really notice that. I'll have to look at another to compare.
