Engine Knocking Issues

My friend told me over the weekend that 3G TL's are notorious for engine knocking issues around 65,000 miles. I feel that the 2004-2005 TL's have easily been on the road long enough to reach this point, but I really didn't think this issue is as common as he made it sound.

Has anyone heard of or experienced this?

Mostly everyone here has a knocking noise in their engine I think. I actually have one in mine and I took it to get checked, they said it was..normal.

Has it been there ever since you first owned the car? I don't think I've ever heard it in mine....

The only issues I'm aware of is knock developed by owners who use 87 octane.. That being said.. the J series has been reported to pull timing even on 93 octane, but I'm not aware of det occuring on any members ride since I've been here unless they were FI or N20 apps.. My engine purrs on my J35 & J32.. I always use tier-1 93 octane & high quality syn oil & filter..

Depends on the type of knocking.

Mechanical as in rod knock, piston slap, no.

Injector/valvetrain noise, a little but it's there when new.

Ping/detonation/preignition, yes, it's present on some. Mine is one of the unfortunate that pings. The ECM is not able to pull enough timing to stop it. It won't stop completely until I get around 95-96 octane. Goes away in the winter. Doesn't start until it's past 100 degrees and it's been driven for 10 minutes.
