New Technology (mod) to Replace Windshield Wipers
Hey all,
I have been researching this new technology that will effectively replace the wind shield wipers by having a protective shield of air (using Bernoulli's principle) instead. I wanted to know how effective you feel your windshield wipers are? Also, what types of concerns would you have with this new techonlogy? |
will it be loud...and how can it clean up say if bird crap hit it??

Good call...and insect dive bombs etc... Austin519 |
It won't be loud.
And as far as the bird crap issue, we're thinking about a pressurized water cannon that'll should be able to get it out of the way. And the insects won't even touch the windshield while driving because of the shield created by the air streams. |
I'm all for it, I'd probably buy it if it was proven effective. There was something on late night tv a little while ago about a chemical coating you spray on your windshield that repels water, so that when you're driving in the rain the water runs right off. Know anything about that?

I've used Rain-x before with good results. But you have to reapply it at least once a month for it to remain effective.
I've recently installed the PIAA Silicone Windshield Wiper Blades (without applying Rain-x) and for the past two months they appear to have the same result as applying Rain-x. The blades apparently leave a slight silicone coating that allows water to run off just like the Rain-x product. Supposedly they last longer than the regular wiper blades too. They do not squeek or make any noise when in operation. It will be interesting to see how long they last in comparison to the stock Acura wiper blades. I found the correct blade size and part number on the PIAA web site. |
Hey Biker, how are those PIAA blades holding up? Do they lift at high speeds like other crappy aftermarket blades? Any streaking or smearing?

Don't need rain-x, the Zaino car wash has the same effect, rarely have to use my wipers (which I replaced with Silblades).

I think the idea wasn't "does the status quo work fine"...but was about a new technology  Austin519 |
I think it would work as long as you had a constant/steady flow. The ability for it to deflect also depends on the mass and velocity of the objects you intend to blow away. How much different is this "new" technology than the bug guard/deflectors you see on vehicles now? If they worked so well, windshield wipers would be obsolete by now. Like the others have pointed out, what happens when you need to slow down or stop/park? Will you be keeping a water cannon in your trunk?
Except for the Intermittent Setting not working anymore (90 Accord), my wipers work fine. I've also used Rain-X in the past and would highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't live in a desert basin... |
