2006 Acura TL Check Engine Light p0420

Just bought a 2006 Acura TL about 2 weeks ago from a used car dealer. It has only 47,000 miles on it and is in phenomenal condition. It has had 2 previous owners and it appears to be slightly modified. Has a body kit and an extra exhaust.

The check engine light came on and after taking it to an AutoZone I was informed it was a P0420 error. I know that this could be a sensor or possibly the catalytic converter.

I recently put a tank of regular gas in it by accident. I was wondering if this could be one of the causes as well?

I already have it scheduled to take back to the dealer I bought it from to find out more, but it is not until Monday and I have been freaking out because I just bought it. I also plan on taking it to the Acura dealer if my dealer will not do anything about it, but they charge to look at it and fix it if it turns out to only be the sensors.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Lots of info on this. Use the forum search tool and search for "P0420".

Doubt it's the gas. Is the light still on? You could put some 93 octane gas back in the tank ASAP and let it mix.

If the light doesn't/hasn't gone out, you probably have a bad O2 sensor or possibly a bad or partially plugged CAT. Read the other threads for more info.

OP -

nfn knows what he's talking about, so do some searching and see what you can find. In addition, in my personal experience, anytime I have come across a P0420, it has been a cat. Doesn't happen often, but haven't had a comeback yet. But you're in a good position to get it replaced for free because federal law puts an 8 year/80k warranty on it. Unless Acura hassles you about the exhuast you speak of, there shouldn't be any issues. Keep us posted.

thanks guys, sorry for the delay I forgot my username. Turned out to be the cat, I took it to the used car dealer i bought it from and they gave me a loaner and had the Acura dealership deal with it at no cost. I am just glad to have my baby back.
