Replacing TL Rear View Mirror

is there a DIY around to do this? I saw one for a CL but it was a single post and not terribly descriptive.

Thanks!

acutee 05-24-2007 01:45 PM

Here it is:

This requires a bit of finesse ,start by opening the sunglass holder .You will see two screws remove them .Next using a small screwdriver pop out the plastic lenses in the overhead light . There are two more screws remove those as well. The overhead console will now drop down .Unplug it and set it aside . You will now see a small electrical connector that has wiring going to the rear view mirror. Unplug this at this time .

Next you need to pry of the small plastic cover on the foot of the mirror where it is attached to the winshield . Now you will need a long thin punch and a small hammer, be very careful . You need to place the long thin punch on the now exposed part of the mirror foot ,there is a notch there that you can use for this . You can also use a long flat blade screwdriver for this .Now using the hammer and the punch (or screwdriver) you have to tap the mirror so that it slides off the base on the glass .You must tap the mirror forward (towards front of the car) . The mirror will eventually slide of it's base on the glass .Once it pops of the base you can thread the wiring out from behind the headliner and it is out . Reassmebli is the the reverse of what you just went through to get it out except obviously you must tap the foot of the mirror towards the rear of the car using the punch (or screwdriver) .Use a lot of caution to do this I don't need to tell you that a mistake here will cost you a windshield. It does not take large amounts of force to do this it just requires a bit of finesse and some patience.

6MTUA5 05-24-2007 02:11 PM

where is your camera located on the rear bumper? i am in the process of running my lines from the head unit but i haven't decided where i am going to mount the camera on the rear bumper.

Blitz 05-24-2007 04:03 PM

I told you to quit trying to do doggy style in the front seats. :whyme:

Malayalee King 05-24-2007 04:51 PM

i put it to the upper left corner of license plate on the bumper. i wish i had the money to mold it into something.

ok guys, Most of you have problaly read that whole thread about the mirror. I havent, just maybe up to page 4. So all I want to know is, who do I call or Email, and what do I put in the email, and do I have to send the old one back, and is this going to cost me anything. Thank you. yes Im lazy to read.

01tl4tl 05-24-2007 08:59 PM

check pages 8 and 13 of that thread for details
You email Dani and she emails a form to complete
and then Fedex brings a new mirror.
Install and return with provided tag- drop off at fedex or kinkos outlet stores-
no charge to you
It is a PRO BONO courtesy gesture replacement so be sure to thank them!

Malayalee King 05-25-2007 01:30 PM

so that return and replacement is only for defective mirrors where the fluid is leaking right?

my problem is a physical piece cracked and it no longer keeps the mirror up -- in fact, i cut the wiring yesterday since it was just dangling around and pissing me off. i take it this would not fall under the return/replacement right?

I'd email Dani at Magna Donnelly and she what she might be able to do. There's no harm in asking.

Bob

01tl4tl 05-25-2007 02:39 PM

Dont have to have actual fluid leak
Mine had spots and was replaced no hassle

Malayalee King 05-25-2007 04:17 PM

just emailed Heath to see if this is covered.

Side note, I found out if you have firefox with the spell check (i guess v 2.0+) and put Acurazine in a textbox, the first corrected option is "Crazinesses". Suhweet!

ThreePointTwoTeeEl 05-25-2007 10:52 PM

lol, M. King; are you high?

phaze 05-26-2007 04:05 PM

Question for you guys. I'm not replacing my mirror just yet, but I am tryig to secure it. For the past month my rear view mirror has gotten loose and sometimes when I'm on a bumpy road, it will fall off and dangle by the power cord.

I slide it back, and it sounds like it fastens, but it still remains loose and falls off easily. What am I missing here?

Malayalee King 06-01-2007 05:52 PM

^ thats exactly what happened to mine. Theres a plastic piece that cracked in the back and it no longer kept it taught (it no longer stayed where i put it).

I'd suggest buying a new mirror....now i'll go take some pics...its here today!

Blitz 06-01-2007 05:59 PM

Quit getting new stuff! I have a package that got here today too! :ninja:

Come help with the install. Jeff is nowhere to be found!

Malayalee King 06-01-2007 07:17 PM

took about 30 mins....i have more pics will post when comp stops fn up.

get tom love to help with teh install of the partz

Blitz 06-01-2007 08:10 PM

Who the heckamajig is Tom?

ThreePointTwoTeeEl 06-01-2007 09:42 PM

yea the install was a bitch took me like 30 mins. I was started to get pissed.

phaze 06-07-2007 07:46 PM

Pics would be nice guys :D

01tl4tl 06-07-2007 08:10 PM

see thread titled
rearview mirror exploded - it has 14 pages of pics and install tips
or spend a few bucks letting a pro do it at the glass replacement shop-
if they break the window they buy it!

Malayalee King 06-07-2007 10:20 PM

here are some, sorry if they are out of order...

1) 2 screws inside sunglass holders
2) pop off plastic piece covering map lights
3) 2 screws where map lights are
4) drop unit out after unplugging connector
5) unplug connector coming from dome light
6) snap 2 covers off (see pictures) -- one on your side of mirror, and one on back side of mirror
7) now shake (wiggle) it like a polaroid picture and it should slide off
8) fish new dome light wire through
9) replace covers
10) replace sunglass holder and domelight unit and plug harness back in.

good luck!

(i dont have many before pictures because when mine broke it was hanging from wiring harness so i cut it off a week prior, but still same process)

Thanks for the pics. I'll be receiving my mirror in 3-5 days.

bangumandoo 06-12-2007 07:12 PM

my mirror isnt broken but its very very very loose. whenever i hit a rocky road, it shakes violently. it doesnt take much pressure at all to wiggle the whole thing. looking at the pictures i dont think i have to take the whole thing apart. any suggestions?

Malayalee King 06-12-2007 08:18 PM

you have to. there is no easy way to reattach the rest of the mirror to the ball on that will remain, as in the pictures.

its not much work.

i have a spare if you are interested -- i bought one from acura car land and can't return it and ended up using the warrantied one.

where are you located?

6MTUA5 06-12-2007 08:23 PM

Nice pics, Malayalee. Be sure to put a link to this page in the mirror thread.

bangumandoo 06-13-2007 12:42 AM

im located in brooklyn, ny. 11229. how much? what condition is it in

CL Platano 06-13-2007 07:38 AM

Good job Kiran Sutra...youre so helpful you should be a moderator..Now keep the HiN models out of your car, I know they are tiny but they can cause a ruckus in small places :)

I can vouch for Dani as I contacted her last Monday and by Thursday I had a replacement mirror.

Installed it over the weekend with help from this thread.

DO NOT WIGGLE IT OFF! I must have used too much muscle because the dang thing wouldn't come off. I cracked the glass in the windshield. Damn!

Use a small screwdriver and tap it out as someone else suggested in this thread. That worked fine. I was reluctant to tap it very hard as I already had a bad experience. But you almost have too. A couple of taps and it came out. Just remember it slides down, towards the dash.

I think my insurance will cover the cracked windshield (I hope).

JDM96specCTR 06-17-2007 09:07 PM

i do autoglass for a living, and i HATE the TL mirrors. they are such a pain in hte ass, i just usually push and pull until it comes off, most times taking teh bracket off the glass with it too lol.. dont matter to me usually tho since im changint the windshield anyway. i dont know why honda had to use such a retarded design, this is the only car ive come across that uses that type of mirror bracket. i havent done enough TL winshields in the year i been doing glass to figure out a great smooth way to get them off, ive done maybe 4 2g/3g tl windshields

I'll let you guys know what happens, thanks!

Malayalee King 06-17-2007 10:42 PM

i still am not sure where one taps it with a hammer or screwdriver...any pics? good luck with replacement!

In your car, check the two square holes near the top of the bracket. Look closely and you will see one has the wires running through it. The other side is open. Place a small screwdriver in the open slot and you should hit metal bracket. It will feel very solid.

Proceed with caution as you know, I cracked my windshield. But I was trying to muscle it off. I think gently tapping the screwdriver should do the trick. Remember to tap down as the bracket slides down, towards the dash.

If you still need help, PM me.

Malayalee King 06-18-2007 10:49 PM

^ yeah i did that and it just hit the metal plate that adhered to the glass. there was no way i was getting enough angle to hit down on it so it would be in the direction it was sliding off -- the headliner is in the way :what:

2000 TL 06-20-2007 08:26 AM

There is a metal backet on the mirror assembly. There is a metal bracket on the windshield. You slide the mirror onto the bracket in the windshield.

If you have your replacement mirror, gently remove the covers and place the screwdriver in the open slot so you can see where it hits the metal bracket. Use this knowledge to angle the screwdriver on the one you're removing.

My headliner was not in the way, make sure you're not angling the screwdriver too high up?

2000 TL 06-22-2007 12:35 PM

Update - Insurance would have replaced my windshield, but I had a $500 deductible. I ended up paying $208 for a replacement. That included mobile response, installation and tax. It looks exactly like the original. It even had the metal mirror mount. Hopefully it will last.
