12-Hour Detailed WDP w/newly dyed BLACK Carpet!

So I FINALLY got a chance to bust out my Christmas gift, aka the PC 7424XP and make this baby SHINE. While I am happy with the results, it's certainly a learning curve and I need to use a more aggressive compound to remove all of the swirlies in order to perfect the paint. Also redyed the interior carpet using VHT spray, which beats the shit out of SEMS and Duplicolor.

Gonna give the front seat a Leatherique treatment next year and see if I can fully restore the dog turd pleather.

FYI: The bumper is chewed to shit and we go RJ style in 2012...in fact, a WHOLE lotta facelift action, more to come. Enjoy!

OH, and I SHOULD have a DSLR at that point in time so I can hang with the big boys around here

Looks good. Have you thought about recovering the lower portions of the door panels in black to accent the interior more? Are those 18 inch wheels?

So your car originally came with the tan carpet and you dyed it black?

This is a must do for me!!!! its starting to stain in spots and id love to dye it black rather than buying new black carpert from the dealer ($$$).

Do you have better pictures?

TIA

What are you using for the Compound/Polish/Wax?

Not sure if you visit the Wash & Wax, but I recommend M105/M205 (maybe a lighter compound like Menzerna) along with either HD Autoglym, Blackfire, Swissvax, or even NXT 2.0 will work (sealant).

Nonetheless, good job!

Looks amazing brother!!! I would love to do mine as well but I've been sick the last few days. Those wheels are great on your car, but center caps missing?

Indeed, someone did my car and got rid of 95% of swirls by only using the 105 compound. I wish he posted up the pictures of my car with before and after.

I don't like visiting that forum too often, just too much shit I want to buy and detailed image's threads make me feel too inferior

WASH: Dawn w/ foam gun
CLAY: Dawn w/ H20, Poorboy's World Clay
POLISH: PBW SSR
GLAZE: PBW White Diamond
WAX: PBW Natty Red

...I'm pretty happy w/ the PBW products, but truthfully I'll give Zaino a shot when it's time to restock. My swirlies need the SSR2 or equivalent, plus I was a little gun shy with the high speeds when breaking down the polish...so let's call this round 'protection', next time well do 'correction'

Thanks, dude! Yes, they are - the XXR 527s come with the most ass-ugly center caps and the TL caps are maybe a stupid 2mm too small to fit. I am going to try and modify the OE caps when I have the chance to make them fit. The color match for the silver is damn near perfect.

Yup. I'll try and snap some tonight. Took 6 cans of VHT dye. I also rented a steam vac from Home Depot for prep, let dry overnight, then had at it. Highly recommended!

lol. From start to finish, maybe 5 to 6 hours. This includes getting and returning the steam vac.

DM-if you're going RonJon, you better contact him now. In a thread in the 4G Community, Rondy said he's getting out of the Aero Kit business.

I actually e-mailed him about 2 weeks ago.

Just make sure the bumper is out of the way.

Looks great! Glad to see someone take good care of the fundamental stuff too. I see too many cars nowadays that are modified great but the look is ruined by horrible paint.

Have you ever considered redoing the leather in your car? It is ridiculously expensive, but it sounds like you're not a huge fan of the TL's leather, and I remember you saying it's one of the things you're always in contact with when you're in the car.

I did it in my last car. May do it again, but it's like a bottom, BOTTOM priority considering the cost.

^^ x3....I just used the M205 with my Porter Cable using a white Lake County Pad, and OMG got rid of everythin..then Wolfgang sealant and PS21s wax...never looked better. You might need a more aggressive pad like the orange..
Remember start with least aggressive pads/polish(swirl remover) and work your way back...

Damn that looks goood nice job. I already know you had the interior ambient lights done like I did on my Type S but it looks great in those pictures (the blue door pocket and handle lights). You went all out and did the back doors as well which I did not bother doing since the only passenger in my back seat ever is my 1 month old lol.

Nice job!! looks awesome.

I have a few questions for you:

How many cans did it take to paint just the carpets?

How do the carpets feel after they're painted? (Does it feel hard or crusty or does it still feel like a normal carpet?)

Does the carpet paint scratch off or dull with friction?

And lastly, were you able to take any shortcuts as far removing the carpets from the car? <- I ask because the service manual says you need to remove the steering wheel etc

I am seriously considering taking the time to do this mod. The low cost for a beautiful facelift of an old carpet seems well worth it to me

The Quality of the Carpet and How long this would last if we dyed it...

Ok, this took about 6 cans or so, but I would recommend having 8 on hand. It does make the carpet a bit tougher, but it's goddamn automotive carpet, so who cares. (FYI: Not me) It does not dull or fade, but that's ONLY using VHT; SEMS and DUPLICOLOR will fade with wear.

And lastly, were you able to take any shortcuts as far removing the carpets from the car? <- I ask because the service manual says you need to remove the steering wheel etc
-Rear Bench
-Interior rocker panels
-Front Seats
-Middle Console
-Dead Pedal

...that's about it. Honestly, I could get to any carpet in under 30 minutes at this point in time. Steering wheel removal?

I am seriously considering taking the time to do this mod. The low cost for a beautiful facelift of an old carpet seems well worth it to me
Well worth the time and effort, IMHO.
