Can the stock Airbox silencer/resonator be gutted ?
Hey guys, I think I'm going to order a k&n drop in. Can the stock intake resonator/silencer be gutted while still appearing stock from the outside?
Just looking for a little more sound and do not want to change the stock iac characteristics.
Thanks!

there is a flexible section that could be replaced between the filter housing and the turbo and there is a small section that has the opening on it that you could replace but I doubt you will get much sound out of it. good luck though. ill go take some pics of the pieces I am referring too.

What year is your RDX?
The 2nd body iteration - '10 - '12 the d/s fog light grill surround can be opened and ducted into the stock air filter box, bringing in true cold air and allowing the silencer and two 90* bends to be removed. You can hear the turbo and the bov better too.

Remove the airbox and drill holes in the firewall side. Then put in plastic louvers to keep out debris. I recommend 6 1" holes for sound and push in black plastic dirt bike airbox round louvers. They are aftermarket Uni airbox vents. Great sound. On my RDX I have a custom exhaust with a single chamber muffler for nice sound. Absolutely no dronning sound but a cool rasp. I have a K&N drop in filter and with these mods the RDX performs a little crisper and sounds fantastic.

I have done this mod, replacing the stock snorkel (ugh) with 3" performance pipe from Summit Racing.
I kept the stock water trap and put in a K&N drop-in filter. Seems to work just fine - get a little bit more sound. If you want sound though definitely go K&N Typhoon, I'd suggest. Or CP-E.

On our '11 this ^ is what I removed, the chamber assy and the air intake cover (silencer with about 200 degrees of bends). I replaced this with a flex pipe up to the bezel of the d/s fog shroud, where I opened the fake fog grill for the air inlet.
True cold air from the front of the car. Only works on '10 -'12. I posted it when I did it if you are interested.

Yup, I replaced that with the 3" silicone ducting from the front of the water trap. You can take the curvy part out of the box that holds the trap. I'm still not sure if it's my final mod or not but it certainly opened up the airflow.

That's where I ducted the 3" silicone pipe to - that air trap that vents in cold air from above the radiator. I removed the hard curvy part from 3 and replaced it with 3" flexible silicone piping that goes up to part #4.
