Type S turbo build, remote mount

im getting sick of my beautiful type-s getting spanked by a WRX.
So im getting started on a custom turbo project with my dad, UTAH TSX
we will be going with a remote mount turbo, replacing the mid muffler with the turbo.
Comp turbo has an oil-less turbo that is water cooled and that is the one we will be going with.
Tuning will be done with hondata flashpro and i will be going to vittuned for the actual tune itself.
Today we ordered the intercooler and all the piping and i already have a hondata flashpro.
my initial goal is 400-450 whp.
any thoughts or opinions/advise, who makes fuel injectors that will fit.
any boosted members have any hiccups in their build i should be aware of?

This is the intercooler we ordered it will be a tight fit sure we have to make a custom bumper bar the stock one is a huge monster

Rdx injectors. Kn tl uses this and he is turbo. I use this and I'm supercharged. Goodluck

That intercooler is the same design as what JnR used in at least one of their versions. They had the BOV directly on the intercooler as well.

I love seeing custom and one off work - how big is the comp turbo that is water cooled? Is there enough room for it to fit where the mid muffler is? Typically I've seen STS turbos are either small to fit in tight places, or are mounted high enough to not be a concern.

Just curious, but what has you going with the rear mount? Is it a concern for welding? Are you using stock cats and j-pipe or do you have PCDs and an aftermarket J pipe?

Definitely will have to brace and sheild the turbo since it will be under the car. I thought about this a while back and still do every once and a while...

Go larger since your getting a turbo just for more over head, and if you ever want to change to a different type of fuel. I.E e85

What he said. The RDX 410s will only be good for 350whp even @ 90% duty cycle and I'd stay around 80% for safety.

You'll need 625cc or so to reach 400 whp. At that point, you might aswell just get some ID1000s and call it a day.

I agree. If you're cash strapped and can't spend a lot on injectors, RDX are cheap alternatives. But if you have any aspirations of going into the 400's, might as well just get the ID1000's.

I'm one of the J&R people with the BOV on the intercooler.

This was taken when I installed my twin disc clutch. It's even more apart at the moment.

I have to say, Im not familiar with that contraption on top. Is that something you made, or a part made to hold the engine and trans in while dropping the subframe?

Also, I've been tempted to get one of the maxjax lifts. How do you like it, and how high will it lift the car?

Back on topic - what is the thickness of the core on the IC? I've seen the ebay version in 2.5 and 3in, and Ive debated between that one, and one that has vertical flow and isn't a dual pass. Can't decide yet. I like the looks of yours, but I've heard the single pass is 'better' but no empirical data to show it or explanations as to why.

top thingy is called an engine brace. Your actually looks more complex and stabled compared to the HF one I seen

It's a Norco engine support. I've been buying tools as I do projects and this one has been used a few times. The bars have come in handy for other things as well.

I absolutely love my lift. I only have 10ft ceilings and I'm only 5'9" and I can sit on a stool and can sit perfectly under the car. It can be used with both or one side, I used it to lift my engine to get it on my engine stand.

The IC is 3" thick. I'm pretty sure it's that way for convenience sake with the turbo and TB on that side of the engine compartment.

If you're getting spanked by a plain WRX you may have bigger problems, Im sure you're referring to the STI version.

interested in seeing this build. I would like to throw some boost at my TL but the JnR is quite expensive for what you get and well.. Im a mechanic so I can do it all myself haha

What is your plan for the water cooling? like routing, pressure, source, etc.

What size charge piping will you be running from the turbo to the intercooler?

Will your exhaust still run to the rear of the car? and are you working around the evap canister or removing it?

As you might be able to deduce, I have my own plans of running a setup like this potentially.

For cooling we will be using the lines that go to the throttle body and running hard lines under the car so it will cool down the coolant to and from the turbo (that is my plan have to make sure there is enough circulation.

We are working with STS turbo to size the turbo and piping correctly it looks like a comp 6262 and 2 in. charge pipe will be used but I'm thinking on a little bit bigger turbo might work better for us

the evap caniter will stay in place the intake is on the other side of the canister and that gives us room for the filter we will build a air box of some type there

What's the purpose or benefit of a remote mount over something placed where the battery is (and relocating the battery)?

Most likely just fabrication of the hot side piping. You can use the stock precats and j-pipe and just have a pipe that connects to a turbo flange. Then, just run a charge pipe all the way back up to the front to the intercooler, then the throttlebody.

There are compromises with each solution though. I had thought of this, but I'm not a fan of a water only cooled turbo. Mine not be a legitimate criticism, but it is one of mine. I am not however, a brand name fanboi. There's WAY too many people that talk trash on chinese turbos. Ive seen too many instances where they work, and in the majority of instances where they don't it's 99% of the time user error. The rhetoric can be saved that tells me how great a Precision Turbo is, or a Garret, etc. My decision has been made. I also don't want to hear the "buy American" because EVERYONE here buys imported products, unless you're Amish, lol.

Ok pictures here, but now for the surprise he gets to spend a couple days on the tig welder (long days) learning how to weld aluminium he is going to do all of the fab work himself I will guide him but he is the one who will have metal slivers and burned fingers on this build

Now would this be 2" to the intercooler then from the intercooler 2.5" or 3" to the tb ?

You always loose a pound or 2 of boost through the intercooler that it the beauty of the turbo just turn it up until you get the 12 PSI or whatever you want the cold air is ALWAYS worth it and it will take what .5 seconds at the most extra to fill it up this turbo can make 30 plus LBS of boost

Yes it will be 2 in. from the turbo to the hole where a cold air filter mounts then 2.5 stepping up to a 3.0 DC cold air intake pipe we already have mostly for looks we don't want a puny little pipe going to the throttle body with a giant Tial blow off valve welded to it

Following this.. i have an old sc61 sitting on a shelf. Though if i myself were to go this route would use a Holset HX35. But i also was thinking about maybe two small twins... like small t3s or 16g turbos mounted back where the mufflers would be. Would be a lot of piping. But then those are just some of my random thoughts.

Sub'ed looks like it will be awesome. At least you didn't get beat by a dodge neon on the highway in your 06 Lexus GS 430. The guy rolled up next to me with his stickers all over it and what not on it.... I smiled and punched it.... then watched him pass me. I went home and laughed myself to sleep.

That's funny my kid brought a Lexus GS 430 to my work and was thinking on buying it but I talked him into a TYPE-S one test drive in a TYPE-S and he was hooked 2 days later bought the one he has now

Yeah, the only things I miss from my GS vs the tl is the RWD and the smooth ride. I like having a manual trans now too. I didn't look into upgrading my GS but I would think there is a ton of power hiding under there. Only getting 300hp out of a V-8? I almost got an ISF next but went with the TL and ~20k extra in my pocket. I got a ton a crap because I worked at a Lexus dealership at the time and was the "f champion". Thats the guy they train to know every little thing about the ISF and why its so great. Just hard to spend ~ 60k for only 416hp in an F.

UTAH, if you and your son have access to a TIG welder and the skills, is there a different reason for using a remote mount turbo besides novelty? Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see it, just curious about the deciding factor. Also, I took a new look at the Comp oil less turbos, pretty neat. I think for purposes of a street driven TL, they would have a great lifespan. I know there were differing reports of their lifespan a few years ago, but that was with high boost, high HP applications from what I understand.

The remote mount decision is one of both novelty and convenience. Its a cool set up and its a little eastier to route the plumbing seeing as the turbo is basicly repacing the mid muffler we dont have to make a custom exhaust manifold and down pipe we only have to worry about the charge pipe into and out of the inter cooler.

So ive been practicing my tig welding.. felt pretty confident so I decided to weld together the pipe out of my intercooler you can see where im putting my blow off valve.

My son learned how to weld and finished his first intercooler pipe with the blow off valve flange on it all in one day what do you think ?

Looks better than my first day tig welding on aluminum! I had difficulty with the foot pedal and blowing through some thin material. I learned to tig steel on a stick welder with no pedal and going to the pedal control on the a/c tig made me have to relearn what I was doing. I wish I had had more time to practice on aluminum.

I think I'm gonna snag one of the cheap everlast tig machines. I've heard really good things about them and I don't need a 240v setup.

I think this is really cool. My son is 3 is already obsessed with cars like me, but I can only hope to be able to do a father/son project like you guys are when he is older.

Best way to learn is to just get in there and get your hands dirty, or at least that's how it was for me. Dads are there to bail your ass out when you fuck it up but then you learn

Hey you never know one day your son could just kinda show up with an old beatup car and ask you for help restoring it.
and I cant agree with you more. The best way to learn something is to get in there and do it.

Well I got my blow-off valve whent with a TiAL, red, and this is where I plan on putting it.
There is a cover in the way but I can cut a little bit off(the plastic) to make it fit around the
BOV.

I've searched fuel pumps and not found much has anyone tried running the stock pump we will be using FIC 1100 injectors getting them from Axion industries all I have found is walbro pumps ant others out there
