Plan is to finish and paint the cage, just not sure when. I'd like to do it prior to any meets/track days but with so much on my plate right now, we'll see how far I get. Don't think I'll be able to match brian's craftsmanship on mine though!

Yup that main hoop is pretty much the standard these days. Not sure on the red tool thing, I'm out of town so he's texting me the pics. I'll ask him though.

Roll cage done, car is home!

Only took TWO MONTHS but the car is done and back home ready for lots of work to get done in less than a month.

Already hard at work, rear windshield is out and weighed in around 13 pounds. should be able to take 10 lbs off switching to Lexan....which is being ordered today.

Also have a new mount for the Aim lap timer and kill switch tacked onto the cage and ready for finishing. I'll snap a pic this morning and post it up.

Nice, now get er done.

Is that rust around the front and rear windshield frames?

Any chance to weigh car and see what cage weighs or too late after removing more weight?

I would paint cage now with windshields removed.

Very very cool, man...that car must feel crazy to drive.

Have you thought about some hexomats or something similar just to keep the dirt and rocks from going all over the place on the floor...and also to have something NON slipper for your heel to rest on?!?

Curious.

Painting now is the plan, just have to get the rest of the stuff welded to the cage first then I'll prep and paint. Rust is around the front windshield yes, that's an issue I'll address here shortly.

Pretty pointless to weigh the car anytime soon. I think the best plan is just establish a new baseline once the car is track ready.

I have an aluminum flat floor with grip tape for my feet, I actually just cut it to fit the cage yesterday. I'll snap a pic of it at some point.

Here's what else I've been working on, nevermind my welding

That looks fucking hardcore...well done man, well done!!! am eager to see the lap time difference...with the same power but more weight, more rigid chassis, it will be a nice close, and hopefully, quicker time!

glad we got all that settled! still can't offer any guarantees at this point, though progress is being made!

huh, I wonder where all this steel came from?!

well, this at least accounts for some of it!

TOTAL: 20LBS

I'll have to add back the weight of the louvered vents but a lot of the weight of the cage has been reduced from elsewhere in the car. This list so far of things offsetting the cage weight is as follows:
Dash removed
Lexan Windows
Lighter sunroof plug
Rear deck removed
Lightened hood
Passenger seat delete
more I'm sure I'm forgetting at the moment...

This is my most favourite thread ever... cause it's the most innovative one, there's always something new/different and exciting when I open this thread.
If it's not your progress it's the detailed discussions.

should have more progress pics by Monday, hoping to knock a lot out over the weekend. Finally have some good weather lined up so I can get the car out, clean the interior, and start painting it.

P.S. - Paint the wheels black? yay/nay?

I know you have no interest but I would love to see you make just one pass at a drag strip just to see what it runs. I bet it's a deep 12 second car or quicker even with the stock-ish engine. Plus I always liked to watch the faster of the road race cars at the strip. Go through the traps at 140mph, bang off a few quick downshifts and take the first turnout where my 130mph car barely makes the 3rd turnout.

Great thread and thanks for sharing so much along the way. When I start a project I have good intentions to take pictures to share and once I really get into it I always say screw the pics.

He should look into spherical front upper and lower control arm bushings front and rear.
A friend told me to use kingpin machine to get some and it would make everything stiffer and make the car quicker.
But I emailed them and they wont do any custom work till fall after the race season.

I prefer a combination of spherical and rubber, just gotta know where to use each.

Even the LA Ferrari hypercars still have rubber bushings.

Exactly. Every suspension system no matter how good does not have perfect geometry and will bind at some point in its stroke when loaded if there's no place for a little give.

Well I'm really doubting I'll make it to the meet this year, with the Realtime TLX going, you'll have all the racecar you need represented though...

I have the Lexan ordered for the front and rear windshields and am hoping to start tackling that this weekend. I've spent the last few evenings cutting thin sheet metal to weld up all the unnecessary holes in the firewall, chassis, etc and I'm working a little gusseting project that I'll share when it's finished.

Would still like to see your car and chat, but I understand if you don't have time.

A sponsored pro race car is cool, but not same as a car built by someone themself in their garage.

Update: gussets are done, I'll snap some pics soon. Lexan is here, just have to finish the interior before I cut and install them.

Seat goes in/out just fine with the cage in...little finesse required but even my full containment seat isn't much a problem.

Diet thought of the day, why wouldn't I swap down to a K series engine? It's 150lbs lighter than the J, has a massive aftermarket, and could make a lot more power and not melt pistons like we're seeing now.

Hmmm.....
