I did mine yesterday. Dynomax 24215 and a 2.25x18" piece of pipe from Autozone. Did the welding myself. Total cost to me was around 50 out the door. Took about 1 hour total for me to do by myself, and that includes putting the car up on the rack. Set up is stock. Intake resonator delete, stock J pipe, MM delete, Dynomax 24215, stock rear mufflers.

To anyone thinking about doing it. Just go for it. Its not nearly as loud as I thought it was going to be judging by some other reviews. They are right, the sweet spot is 2500-3k. But other than that, it really isn't noticeable at all with the windows up. Especially with the radio on at normal listening loudness.

There is a nice improvement in the tone I will say so its not a completely useless, and given the chance, I would definitely do it again. What Im getting at is, if you're afraid of too much volume, don't be.

And to answer the next question, there is absolutely no drone or rasp. Period.

I dont believe anyone has done that. Most of them add big resonators and straight pipe at the end but they don't add mid mufflers.

Ohh because I have a dyno res and no mid muffler. I wanted to get a louder sound but not too loud and an annoying sound, so I was thinking if I could just put like a aftermarket muffler, for a more controlled tone, where the mid muffler was at (I am trying to save money and not buy 2 rear mufflers haha) and straight pipe it to the rear

Just had the stage 2 done to my car. Deleted the mid muffler and replaced stock resonator with magnaflow resonator. I love it. Not loud but has a nice tone, similar to a G35. No rasp or drone at all.

Stage 4.
Loudest setup out of all 3. Has a bit of a rasp, similar to M3 exhaust setup.
Stock exhaust.
Remove Mid-muffler. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.

to my car yesterday seems really quiet to me. Not as loud as i thought it was gonna be. Sounds nice either way.

I did the stage 2 on my 2007 auto. I like the sound i get between 2500 and 3500 RPM, but i would have definitely went for stage 3 instead as i can barley hear it.

Would you happen to have a video of what it sounds like? I've seen some on YouTube, but it helps to hear it from different cameras. They all sound different.

Ill see if i can put something together. Its at its loudest in the morning when the car is cold. Then it quiets down. Not really loud to be honest. FYI im running type s quad mufflers i dont know if the base tl and tls are the same mufflers or not.

I was just reading an old thread about deleting the 3rd cat. From what i read it frees up maybe 3-5 hp. Now if you still have the resonator with 3rd cat delete and mid muffler delete probably wont make a difference.

Question: who here had a hanger welded onto that new section of the pipe? Anyone think it's needed?


I mean, sure, deleting the mid-muffler got rid of some weight off the system, but that also meant that the system has one fewer hanging-point to support the exhaust.

I did the stage 4 on my 08 TL type s auto and it is a little raspy on heavy load in the low rpm. Thinking about getting PCD and j-pipe with third cat delete. Instead and buying the after market resenator to lower the raspy. Can I just put my stock resenator back on Instead??

Did stage 3. Loved the tone difference I noticed right away and it's true what they say, after about 5 days for me the tone got deeper and louder and I'm now super happy. Anyone worried stage 3 will be too loud it will not honestly.

Now all this stage 4 Buisness needs to Stop, like 7 out of 10 people think it's too raspy and regret it but it's displayed in this thread as if it's the best option when it is in fact the loudest I think most people want rich deep tone.

All that i read people do want the deeper tone rather than rasp.

I love the rasp on the M3 and the minor to no rasp i get with stage 4, I couldnt ask for more. I get alot of compliments from audi, bmw, other TL owners on how nice my stage 4 set up sounds.

Ya some people love the rasp of stage 4 others say it sounds not so pleasing. Strange.

Not sure what stage you classify mine, as I removed the mid muffler as well as the stock resonator. I maintained 2 1/4" piping all the way through.

The guy who did it for me said it was a waste of money to add on a magnaflow/brand of your choice resonator since i already had the stock one there and that he would just be taking my money, so I took his advice and just did straight pipe from where the muffler and resonator was cut.

Very happy with the way the car sounds, I'm glad i went further and removed the resonator on top of the mid muffler. no ricey revs and sounds great cabin is perfect!

^ You have stage 4, im glad you like it! For anyone to answer, i have an Atlp v2 jpipe with race pipe & stage 1. I want to change the resonator for a little more sound and was considering the longer Dynomax 24235 instead of the 24215 so i dont have any chance of rasp. But im concerned since the stock resonator and that 24235 are the same length the sound may not change. Thanks for any input!

Okay so I took my 03 TL (not type S) to the exhaust shop today to modify my exhaust. After raising it in the air I noticed it did not have a resonator just cat mid muffler and the rear two mufflers. I removed the mid muffler and there is hardly a change in the way it sounds. It basically still sounds stock. From all the others videos I have seen of others doing this they get a much deeper sound. I am curious if adding an aftermarket resonator to the system will make it a little more noisier or if I should go straight pipe? I thought about the straight pipe but I don't want too much noise and I am afraid that will happen since all that would be on it is the stock headers to the cat then straight pipe back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fun times over here in Ohio! Trying to get Stage 3 done, have the Dynomax 24215 in hand... but I've taken it to four different small shops here and my quotes for work are $175-$475. I almost shit when the guy said it looked like 5hrs of work. I've taken exhaust diagrams, the resonator, and showed them the stuff on the lift. Not sure what else to do, so I'll try two or three more shops and then probably send the Dynomax back to Amazon.

^^Got mine done at Meineke for $102.35. It literally took them like 15 mins to do. Yeah, I first went to Midas and they quoted similarly at like $400...insane! Just have to find somebody reasonable...don't give up!

It's a 15min job. 2 cuts, 3 welds, and a foot of 2.25 inch piping. I would not pay over $100.

Got stage 3 done on my brother's TL-S last week. $80 dollars at small muffler shop.
It's not overly loud at all. Has a nice deep tone - basically how it should've came stock. The sound is more inline with what one would expect with the aggressive look of the stock tips.

Paid about $40 for the dynomax resonator on Amazon and another $40 to have it welded on and remove the mid-muffler... best mod I've done so far! Sounds absolutely fantastic.

After asking way too many questions on here, yesterday I went down to a small locally-owned muffler shop & had that mid-muffler brick cut out & replaced w/2.5 straight pipe.

Executive summary statement: I can't possibly imagine a better value-per-dollar spent than this simple mod. Totally a good idea. Totally worth it. Very pleased.
(I have an 07 Type-S 6 spd.)

The exhaust note is definitely improved but the car isn't now "loud." If that makes sense. The change is more of the deeper, more rumbly variety, & mostly at the bottom of the rev range. From off-idle to about 3,500rpm --right in the 'around town' sweet spot-- is where its most noticeable. Under WOT up above 4,000 you can't really tell much difference from stock; but the engine is doing most of the wailing then anyway.

Now, I notice it b/c I own & drive the car regularly. To the uninitiated I'd say the sound mostly matches the car's looks. Its not so over-powering that the moment you fire it up everyone's head w/in a 50-ft. radius is going to swivel around wondering "what the hell is THAT?!", and at idle there's really no difference from stock at all. But once rolling its just a little bit deeper, throatier, a little more aggressive under mild throttle & very noticable right at shift points under normal driving - which for me tends to be in 3 - 4,000rpm neighborhood.

Coming down my street allowing the car to coast/decelerate at about 2,500 in second gear was nice. It has just about the right amount of rumble. But keep in mind this is from a 50-y/o father of 3 who's trying to let the neighbors sleep, not a 25-y/o bachelor who's trying to wake the dead.

As for the much-dreaded 'drone' and/or 'rasp' - there is none. At constant-rolling speeds its completely stock-sounding.

The shop charged me $50 & it took them about 20 minutes. A little steep but I wasn't gonna quibble over a 10 dollar overcharge, espec. since I can use them again to do work that's ,....*ahem*,...close to some legal lines.

I'm going to rock this for a while and see if it grows on me. In another thread one of you said you additionally deleted the cat and that really brought a nice deep boom. That may be the next step. But for now I can say this; if you've thought or are thinking about doing this there is no question its the best $35-$50 bucks you can spend...unless you know some girls in Tiajuana.

I didn't like the way the sound with the mid muffler delete, so I had the resonator delete also, and now it sounds much better.

warning, i did stage 3 with dynomax 24215(suppose to be the louder dynomax) on my 05 Base with Type-S exhaust and it's barely louder. Slightly louder than stage 1. I think the type-s mufflers are dampening most of the noise. oh well. i get a small grunt 2k-3k and then nothing lol

I would think having cats one your car will affect the sound as well. Mine is stage 2 with j-pipe/magnaflow, and PCD and it's pretty loud.
