Glad you like it! I was thinking about maybe getting some dual HKS Hi-power canisters, but after many days of contemplating, I would not want to change this setup. All I'm waiting for now is a pair of headers to come out at a DECENT price.

I'm trying to find a good day to do it as I've been pretty busy at work. I have some great recording gear and I intend to record a before and after shot using all the same audio settings so we can really hear what's different. I'll have one of my staff set up the recording rig and I'll do a stock drive-off and a modded one after I get it done.

No promises about when I'll be able to do it, but I'm hoping in the next 2-3 weeks.

I live in the east bay, but work in Redwood Shores (peninsula). I would be doing the recording on the peninsula, so I'd like to find a shop in the Redwood City/San Mateo area. I haven't done the mod, yet.

I'm not sure if you read this far back but I had posted a sound clip on page 2.
I recorded it from the garage but I also had posted a stock clip. You can compare the 2.

OK, I had the rez and mid muffler removed. Replaced with 2.5" stainless. Its better than stock, but. I think its raspy and there isn't enough low end (rumble sound). Thinking of redoing the thing. This time I think come from the header cat. To a magnafow rez, then to magnaflow duel in/out. Back to my stock tips. Not sure yet... Maybe something in a chambered muffler would give me more low end rumble?? What do you think?

I think that if you read this thread, everyone said not to remove the resonator because it adds too much rasp.

At any rate, there is a post above with positive results when he swapped the stock resonator for a magnaflow resonator. You could do that or also add those magnaflow mufflers. A lot also has to do with how loud you want it to be. What are you looking for?

Yeah I was just thinking of that as an option, if I ever wanted the car to stand out and have a bit more of noise. But now that I think about it, I already get looked at enough by cops because of the tint. It doesnt really add much hp, just mainly looks and sound. I'm waiting for the headers to be a bit more affordable, and I'll throw those on in the future.

I'm not sure what the stock piping size is on the TL-S, but just have them match it with the same diameter and it should be fine. But then again, I haven't heard anyone do this mod on the TL-S. Let us know how it turns out!

Is the mid-muffler not simply a second resonator?

^- you can call them pretty much whatever you want. Magnaflow doesnt use the term resonator, but round body muffler. Round body mufflers and what we traditionally think a muffler is do pretty much the same thing...reduce noise. The difference between the two comes down to their shape and how the exhaust is channeled through them.

Magnaflow has a straight through design, meaning there are no separate chambers (except they do have a 3 chamber muffler) inside the muffler/resonator case. If you look through one end of a magnaflow muffler you can see out the other (there is some variation on mufflers with different offsets, but the idea is the same). Magnaflow relies on insulation to reduce the sound. Both their oval body and round body mufflers are set up this way, the round body of course having less material to deaden sound (you can get huge ass ones though, not just the 4" round)

Flowmaster took a different approach. If you have ever looked at a cross section of one of their mufflers you see they use chambers set up to move the exhaust. Their delta flow mufflers are quieter because they set up triangle things that have some of the exhaust "cancel" each other out. Delta Flow Flowmasters actually do a good job at making the interior/exterior noise quieter.

Flowmaster has several different series, 40, 50, 70, etc. The reason the 70 series is quieter than the 40 is the 70 series is about 2.5 feet long whereas the 40 series has a 14" case. The extra length coupled with more chambers makes the exhaust quieter.

I know this doesnt have much to do with anyone planning on removing a resonator on their stock exhaust, but its easier to use examples from companies that people might be familiar with then trying to explain it otherwise.

So I've been reading up alot on this. aznbo187 stated that he removed the mid-muffler and replaced this with the magnaflow 10436 resonator. He kept saying that it was the 14 inch one, but everytime I search for the part # it comes back saying it is the 22inch model. I read also that subinf added the same part # and also said that it was the 14. Online it is telling me the 14 inch is part #10416......am I going crazy? Which part # is it?

I am planning on removing the midmuffler and adding the 14 inch magnaflow resonator. I was planning on doing a custom cat back exhaust, but if I can get these two things done for $100 and add that little extra growl or SEX that someone mentioned earlier it worth it.

Also does anyone have a good recomendation for a shop in the San Diego area? I saw a posting for the OC, but that is $20 in gas......so the savings aren't there. Thanks

I used a 10435 resonator. Its 22" long. And I may have been wrong about the pipe size from the cat back to the Y....I really need to get my car up in the air again before I really screw myself up in trying to remember everything.

Please ignore the part number in my above post. A little searching refreshed my memory...I guess I used the 10425 resonator.

So you have the 24 inch model. Does it create a lower rumble than the stock resonator? How do you like the sound? getting ready to order it, also is $55 shipped a fair price?

I bought mine from hottexhaust.com, and here is the product code.
Product Name: 14" Body, 2-1/2" Round Resonator ProductID=10416

It was 50$ w/ free shipping which I found to be the best price.

I love the sound, and it's exactly where I want it to be. You should have asked me about it at the meet. But it creates somewhat of a low rumble, but not like aftermarket exhausts...more like G35's and Fx's. Hope that helps. Oh and I took both resonators out and replaced one with a straight pipe, and one with the magnaflow.

Damn, I wish I would have know about this back then. I'm gonna trust you on this one........

So the 14 incher gives a lower tone than the 24 that subinf has right?

Yes, although the body length on my resonator is 18"...the 24" is the overall length. I made a mistake on my part number, I'm fairly sure its 10425. You will probably get a little more tone wise out of the 14" body

This mod sounds great. And I'm thinking of doing it, especially it's being inexpensive to swap back, but since I have a lease I once again wanted to make sure that the warranty will stay intact and the "check engine" light wouldn't come on. Any thoughts?

Wont mess with the warranty and the check engine light wont come on. If you want to get the exhaust back to OEM standards before your lease is up the shop will just reweld in the OEM resonator. I dont know if there is any problem giving back a car with welds on the exhaust or not.

okay i got a bit confused, so it would be great if someone could clear it up.

Basically I should remove the resonator AND then mid-muffler, and then weld the Magnaflow resonator (14" Body, 2-1/2" Round Resonator ProductID=10416) and use the stock muffler and tips.

Am i correct?

Basically you are removing the stock resonator and replacing it with the magnaflow resonator of your choice. Then you are also removing the midmuffler and replacing it with a straight pipe. Hope this helps

That's not your car is it? Did you do the mod yet? How does it sound with the longer resonator? I'm actually thinking about going with an even shorter resonator than the 14" for a bit more sound

No it not.....I pulled it off another thread I found that illustrated what the shop did. I just ordered the resonator, should get it Friday or Saturday for a quicky install. Thats assuming I can find a place here in town that will do it for a decent price. $150 is the cheapest I have found, and I've called 6 places so far.

Wow, 150?? I got mine done for $60. And the qoutes I got were also ranging from only 60-80$. Of course I got mine done at a "hole in the wall" shop, but I think they still did a good job.

Where did you go to get yours done? I'm looking down in San Diego and thats the best I've found. I guess I will look for hole-in-the-wall places while I'm out driving around this week and weekend.

Anyone have a suggestion for a shop in San Diego?

In general what is usually the reason for the "check engine" light to come on? I'm asking this question again because I used to have this problem with my previous cars when I was messing with exhaust system.

Lots of reasons, but if you are dealing specifically with the exhaust you usually run into problems if you mess around with the catalytic converters or o2 sensors. Cracked exhaust pipes as well as clogged pipes can also cause your car to throw a CEL
