Before the avalanche and onslaught of "you should have searched" comes in - which pray tell, you should have done...

Budget at least 10K for a turbo setup - not including building the motor. That might sound high, but when you consider all the ancillaries you need, it's about right. I believe maddogtheta was selling his used rear mount setup for 8500 or so a while back, and I can pretty much say that is WELL below what he had in it.

The hard part - there is no "turbo kit" for the TL at this time. JnR made one, but to my knowledge no longer offers it, or if they do, they are not a part of this forum.

Further issues - if you have an Automatic, you need a tuning solution. JnR had an ECU that was a megasquirt that tied in to the factory ecu, but again - JnR not so cool. If you could find one used, that would be your best bet - if you have a 6MT, you can use a Hondata.

Further - if you have an auto - be prepared for the transmisson to be your limiting factor. I believe one of the turbo TL guys had issues with his and swapped to a 6MT.

I am apprehensive in recommending this because I know he'll just get bombarded with absurd questions - there is a turbo kit in the Black Market right now for an INSANE price - custom turbo kit with manifolds made by Hickam (if you don't know that name, go look it up, he's a very talented header and manifold builder) and the entire kit is less than $3500 bucks. You will NEVER in a million years find anything that cheap ANYWHERE. It's all quality parts too.

So, I've found a turbo kit for 3500 - lots cheaper than 10K you think? Not so fast - can you install it? Can you tune it? Based on your questions, I would think not. So, add money for that - budget about $1500 for a Hondata and tune - and that's cheap. Budget about $1500 for install and that's cheap.

Hey, now you're at 6500 bucks - still less than 10K - what a deal. Now, go out and have fun and hope that your motor doesn't blow up (it most likely will - I think every turbo TL on this forum has had some type of engine failure, be it melted piston, cracked ringland, broken skirt, etc) So now budget another $3500 to build the motor. There's your 10K. Oh, wait that wasn't an installed price. Add some more money. Yay - you're done.

Until your transmission breaks - now build the transmission.

If you didn't like all these cliffs notes, click the search this forum on the Performance forum and just search turbo. You'll find a BUNCH of threads related, all saying similar to what I just wrote.

Oh how we need a sticky regarding turbos...

Here's a partial rundown of costs without labor.

Turbo Kit - $3500-5000
Exhaust - $300
Injectors - $200-1000
MS3 (5AT) - $500 or Hondata - $1000

Extras

Boost Controller - $300
Wideband Controller $150
Meth Injection - $500-2000
Full return fuel system - $1000 (depending on HP target)
Catch cans - $100-300

Failure related costs

Pistons - $1100
Rods - $1500
Bearings - $300
Gaskets - $300
Timing belt - $300

6MT gears when 3/4 blows - $500-1200 (if Mfactory gears are available)

On top of that you need to install it and get it tuned.

Then the constant monitoring and improvements. These guys are knock monsters and will eat themselves in a instant. Like stated, everyone who has done this has had at least one major issue with either the engine or drivetrain.

Deep pockets and much patience is needed.

No clutch and flywheel? Need that, so there's another $1200 to $1500, plus install if you can't do it yourself.

You can check out my turbo type s build thread if youd like... link is in my sig.

Ive got well over 20k into my turbo setup and counting. However I went above and beyond for high quality parts and excessive addons to make things run smooth.

Then I blew my trans and that was another 4k. I had it less then 2,000 miles and it blew.

It was totally worth all the time and effort, however I dont drive the car as much as I would like because its expensive as hell, and not exactly reliable anymore. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.
