I thought I might ask this question here since I can't find the answer anywhere.
Is anyone running lower load index tires than the OEM tires?
I'm in need of two rear tires, the front ones are OEM Michelin Pilot with 93V load index and about 50% tread left. I am wondering if it's ok to get 91V for the rear. Thanks.

To answer your question: if you go to Costco or anywhere to get new tires they won't let you buy lower load tires than OEM. It's safer to get the same or higher load rating for tires, even if you never really carry anything/anyone in your car. Check out tirerack.com and put your specific vehicle in.

they are both right it's always best to use same index as oem or higher, and the reason tire place will not put a lower index tire is well they are a business and don't want to risk a lawsuit to make a couple hundred dollars....Now if you are in a pinch like it seems you are you will be fine with 91v....the diffirence is not that great which will cause any serious harm believe me.....Now with that being said if you plan on driving over 120mph on a consistent basis then I would suggest using same index for sure, but otherwise if you find some cheap 91v to put in do it, just make sure you at least have the 2 tires with same load index in across each other, meaning either put them in Front or both in the rear...Just my with that bro....good luck with getting some new tires, and if you still haven't found some good tires check out tiresavings.com they are cheaper then tirerack.com and ship usually within 24hrs. Their warehouse is local as well in watertown, ma

correction to my statement above as the diffirence between 93 and 91 is just how much a tire can support weght wise which between those two the diffirence is 15kg more then 91 can support which is like 77lbs or around there....so you will be fine as your letter is your speed rating and a V rated tire is good for 149mph, so unless you plan on carrying alot of shit that will require ur extra 77lbs then go with the oem if not then you will be okay....but as always a rule of thumb just stick with oem or higher...sorry if the info uptop was a bit misleading

p.s. 93 is like 1433 range and 91 is 77lbs less than that at like 1356

I guess I better stick to OEM load or higher to be on the safe side. Now I have a better understanding on what my options are and finally have that question cleared out. Thanks BostonSilverTypeS for taking the time to write all that! lol
