McLaren 1984, MP4/2, won 12 out of 16 races. Lauda WDC, McLaren WCC. Pretty amazing season and start of 3 straight WDC from 1984-6

Who are the best ever Formula One drivers?

https://ig.ft.com/sites/the-best-f1-drivers-ever/

Very interesting analysis of the best F1 drivers with comparison to the cars they drove compared to the competition of their era.

Well, that's a wrap.

Anyone catch the podium "champagne" shower?

Thanks! We were sitting at Turn 9 as well. The first several photos (their recon laps) were taken from one of the pedestrian bridges on our way to Turn 9.

Hopefully, Mercedes will get more competition next year.

Still no idea what engine Red Bull will have. Can't tell from Horner's recent comments. Renault, Infiniti, Mercedes, Honda, Acura????????

I read a quote this morning from Christian Horner which said with regard to next year's RBR power unit "one thing is certain, Ron Dennis will not be happy." Did Honda override Ron's veto?

That's what I'm talking about Chief. Over the last three days, Horner has made conflicting statements that seem to cause confusion.

First, he hints that Red Bull will stay with Renault but with other branding. This indicates that RB will use Renault/Infiniti/Nissan???

Then he says that he can't comment on what engine yet, and the reason is because of Toto Wolf. So it seems to indicate that Mercedes is still in play.

Then he says that Ron Dennis won't be happy. This seems to imply that RB will use Honda (or Acura as a loophole to Ron Dennis's contract)????

I figured that's what you were getting at but now it seems near certain the RBR/Renault deal is a certainty given that "Autosport" is reporting it

There's two ways to look at that quote.

Even if Renault pulls out, the F1 engine program might continue, similar with the Mecachrome engines back in the Benetton days.

Or RB's simply has a deal with someone else.

Red Bull to use TAG Heuer branded Renault engines????

I guess that's why Horner said Ron won't be pleased.

What exactly can Mario Illien do to the Renault engine? Isn't the engine homogulated, and only the engine manufacturer can use tokens to change it?

Mansell autobiography review, not a big Nigel fan but he definitely is a ballsy (11/10) driver to say the least.

That's a good question, there are lots of mechanical limitation but I thought the S/W can be changed. Ilien although a mechanical engineer and former Cosworth employee, is extremely sharp in ECU management and understanding the big picture of powertrain management.

No amount of software changes will make an engine competitive if mechanical limitation is the weakest link. The Honda powerplant is a good example.

Homologation just kills progresses and competitions.

It's not that simple, since neither of us know the woes of the Honda engine. It's a complicated mechanical/electronic/battery/cooling/electrical/software piece of the technology. Honda had alot of electronic problems with the mechanical and thermal kinetic recovery systems all season. This was noted at Monza.

Surprised Benjamin Hoyle was not put on "Gardening Leave", he was one of only four team leads at MB powerplant racing group.

I like the power play by MB on this. Both drivers owe a ton to Mercedes. I would argue Mercedes is more responsible for the championship than Hamilton is.

In 1988 McLaren won 15 of 16(and would have won them all if not for a backmarker in Italy) and Senna won his first title. The McLaren Honda MP4/4 is still the most dominant car in F1 history.

Both are legendary cars (Barnard MP4/2, Murray/Nichols MP4/4) with slightly different context.

The MP4/2 was in the middle of the first turbo era, and was a extremely versatile package with it's Porsche/TAG motor. It was so dominant it won 3 straight WDC's (last was on some luck as Williams FW11's were the best car). It beat

1988 was the last turbo year and most teams choose to revise their 1987 turbo chassis (Ferrari, Arrows, etc.) or design new normally aspirated cars (Benneton, Williams, etc.). Only two teams (Lotus 99T and McLaren MP4/4 both using the all new Honda motor) designed all new turbo cars for 1988.

The MP4/4 was so good that it only tested a week before the first race, when the team saw they were ~2 seconds faster than the rest they knew they had the WDC/WCC even before the first race, the only question was Prost or Senna?
