It's not on the secondary market for us to buy yet. So it could open higher or lower.

But the answer is yes.

wow, up almost another 30% today.

Is there anything to prevent Canon, Nikon, others from entering the market? Does GoPro hold some patent?

You can read the GPRO IPO prospectus to see what patents they hold here --> http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/da...d552193ds1.htm

But in short, they hold 42 patents and have 68 patent applications pending review in the U.S. Overseas, they have 15 patents, with 12 applications pending.

Our intellectual property rights and proprietary rights may not adequately protect our products.

Our commercial success will depend substantially on our ability to obtain patents and other intellectual property rights and maintain adequate legal protection for our products in the United States and other countries. We will be able to protect our intellectual property from unauthorized use by third parties only to the extent that these assets are covered by valid and enforceable patents, trademarks, copyrights or other intellectual property rights, or are effectively maintained as trade secrets. As of the date of this filing, we have 42 issued patents and 68 patent applications pending in the United States and 15 corresponding issued patents and 12 patent applications pending in foreign jurisdictions. Our issued U.S. patents will expire between 2024 and 2032 and our issued foreign patents will expire between 2022 and 2038.

They're currently being sued for camera mount patent :

I doubt very much that Canon or Nikon would ever attempt to compete...There are chinese knock-offs, and Several other companies have attempted such as Sony, JVC, and even Garmin....no dice.

The company that was in the lead for these types of cameras prior to GoPro...you don't even hear about them anymore, i can't even remember their name.

As far as Go Pro....many car, sport enthusiasts buy them.

And entertainment...you can barely watch a TV show, commercial, or major feature without seeing go pro footage in there somewhere.

This company has its foothold for awhile.

Flip?

Cisco bought them out for $590 million , but dropped out of the business in 2011 (2 years later).

If I remember right, they were the first to link their camera to a smartphone. But it was by Bluetooth not wifi IIRC.

Long term? Too early to tell, but leaning towards no. Need to see how they're planning to expand income stream and grow the business. Long term, selling one single product won't do it. Remember Flip? They had a dominant market position but have since gone under.

One thing they're thinking/planning to do is to somehow monetize on the videos people upload through a partnership with Microsoft, Google (YouTube), and Virgin America. How? Probably through ads.

Most recent earnings (2014) shows that revenues ($235 million) fell 7% and profit ($11 million) fell 52% year over year. R&D expenses also rose to 12% of revenue vs 5% a year ago.

I'd consider taking profit before lock up expires.

flip died because they did what a cellphone does now.

go pros are pretty specialized. Only way they will die is if they don't keep updating hardware to match the growing tech market and demands of the consumers.

Yea rumor has it the hero 4 will shoot 4k @ 30fps and 1080p @ 120fps.

The hero 3+ is like 15fps in 4k.

I just hope they improve the battery and make them not get so hot when they record. Almost burned my hand after dune bugging in Vegas. Granted it was under 100° sun thou.

Not chasing this one. Options start trading on Monday. That could bring volatility to the stock.

Down 11%

Betting On Big Drop, Shorts Borrow All the GoPro Stock They Can

11:08 am ET, Jul 2, 2014

For GoPro Inc. (GPRO -9.92%), now comes the hard part.

Bearish investors are out in full force betting against the video-camera maker’s stock price after it more than doubled throughout its first four days on the public markets. Whether GoPro can convince the skeptics of its future prospects will go a long way in determining the stock’s next move.

The cost of borrowing GoPro shares, a proxy for short-selling activity, has “immediately become one of the highest in our system,” says Karl Loomes, market analyst at Astec Analytics, a unit of financial technology firm SunGard. In addition the utilization level -- the percentage of shares available to loan that are actually being borrowed–is near 100%, Mr. Loomes says. It’s rare for a stock to have such a high utilization level.

“Both these figures suggest borrowers are snapping up all the available GoPro shares they can, and are willing to pay a high price to do so,” Mr. Loomes says. Astec didn’t immediately provide the exact number of shares available to loan.

Short sellers borrow shares to sell them in hopes of buying them back cheaper at a later date, aiming to profit from a price decline.

GoPro shares recently fell as much as 15%, on track for the first decline since the company went public last week. The stock jumped 31% in its debut on Thursday and then gained 14%, 13% and 20% in each of its next three days, respectively. It traded as high as $49.90 on Tuesday, more than double its $24 IPO price, and recently traded at $44.70.

As we’ve noted, it’s unclear whether investors should value the firm as purely a gadget maker, or a lifestyle brand, or a social-media firm, or some combination of all three.

No matter what kind of company it is, it looks like GoPro’s Wall Street honeymoon is coming to an end. And until GoPro can back up its high stock price with strong quarterly results, short sellers aren’t likely to relent in their pursuit against the stock.

“Although sharp and strong moves are common in the first days of securities lending activity
of a newly listed company, and often unrelated to short selling activity, these numbers are dramatic even by those standards,” Mr. Loomes said.
