Thanks to the event of the last week I want to proudly announce that I am now at an all-time high of -19.71% YTD!

That means even though I've contributed 8800 this year, I'm only up 700 in value.

You can't watch it every minute, it'll drive you nuts.
Just keep contributing, by the time you retire you'll actually be able to retire.

Agreed. My fellow 20 y.o. co worker keeps buggin' me about his 401k performance and how he'll stop contributing. I think that's SO STUPID.....i'm 23. i'll ride this out and probably another one before i'm ready to retire....I just keep contributing 15% of my paycheck each pay period and let it marinate....i'm dollar cost averaging, so i'm not worried....

My balance is lower than it was a year ago - and that's including my contributions and employer match. Good thing I still have ~25 years until I can use this money for retirement.

Good thing I have about 25 - 30 years before I retire. And my kid's going to state college unless him throwing stuff hard with his left arm can be enhanced to include a baseball.

Teach him to kick a football... easiest way to get a scholorship IMO.

It's a roller coaster that over time should trend upwards. But there's no point in watching it daily unless you're close to retiring - at which point you need to redistribute your holdings to something less volatile.

but you can't help but check when the markets are moving so much each day.

it's interesting to see how it affects your overall portfolio.

frankly, i'm not so much worried about my 401k or roth because it's something i won't be touching for a long time (or at least i hope so).

but on my regular mutual fund accounts that were set up for future savings like an engagement ring.

I look at it this way: the market will recover eventually and I'm simply buying shares on the cheap.

Can't touch the thing for ~40 years anyways.

and that's probably the most optimistic way to look at it at this point.

-22%. its a 40 year investment, im not worried about daily cost averaging. started putting in the max contribution as early as possible (start-up = 6 mo. of post-graduate employment). that was about a year ago...

You guys cant check it daily!! thats like making your woman take a pregnancy test every time after sex. just put in your contribution and hope for the best.

Roth IRA is -23.10% YTD. I second yunginTL, I never thought that I would be happy to say that I have at least 30 years left to work.

emerging markets have been slammed this year.

i was down 45% in my emerging markets fund. so i've lost all of my gains from last year when it was up 45.
