Set up a schedule on my nest a week ago and trying that. It's much more consistent on how much my furnace is running but I'm not sure it's saving me as much money.

I've had it for about 90 days now and I'd say it works very well and is contributing to conserving energy.

One of my favorite features is how it uses a/c. After the condenser is done cooling, it runs the fan for an additional 15 minutes to use the cold air that was already built up, and running the fan takes much less energy than a condenser. Traditional thermostats just shut off the entire unit when the desired temperature is reached.

We just bought the house in June, I wish I had so,etching to go off of but we were in a 924 sq ft condo before with electric heat and so far this 3200 sq ft house is costing me less to hear than the condo did.

Wally Works with Nest

BOOM, found what I need, too bad it's expensive

I guess I could do a-la-cart, $125 for the hub and $35 for a sensor.

I like this idea, an app that tells nest when everyone is away. https://www.life360.com/nest/

Google App for iOS now works with Nest.
Google App for iOS Gains Nest Integration - Mac Rumors
https://workswithnest.google.com/

The right temperature at the right time

Google works with Nest to automatically deliver the right temperature at the right time. All you need is a Nest Thermostat and the Google app on Android or iOS. When you’re on your way home, Google will work with Nest to pre heat or cool your home to your preferred temperature. You'll also get a Now card to tell you what is happening.
Why do I need the google app for this? This is something the Nest app should be able to do.

More stuff that works with Nest.

Nest Can Now Talk To Your Lights, Locks, and More

Btw, I just bought a Nest Protect last night. At least it will help my Auto Away woes.

The August lock looks pretty cool.

The thermostat? Should have during the holidays when they were $200. The protect was quick and easy to install, integrated with no issues. The power up sequence made the tech geek in me giddy.

The timing was right, my Smoke/CO detector was 8 years old so it should have been replaced anyways, I had a gift card which paid for the Protect and I only needed one (condo).

Is anyone controlling their humidifier with their Nest? I have an Aprilaire 760. It looks like if I purchase a relay I should be able to control it with my Nest. I may try this out in the Spring.

I want to! One of my coworkers did this. My humidifier has an analog dial, but if I can convert it to work with my Nest, that would be even better. I don't have much knowledge on the subject.

Edit: Just learned 1st gen isn't humidifier compatible. Oh well, not a must for me to have this automated.

My Nest stopped checking in on Sunday. I checked it and it said that it wasn't connected to wifi. It couldn't find any wifi networks when it did a scan. I rebooted it and it was fine after that. That is the first time that ever happened to me. At least it wasn't a total fail, the heating schedule continued to work while the wifi was down. I wish Nest would send an email when it doesn't hear from a thermostat for 24 hours.

in the summer, nest works perfectly because there's only one temperature; hot.

here in texas, our winters are very inconsistent. The nest wants to continue using a pattern or a schedule that is no longer there due to change in weather every 3 days.

Hmm I thought it did... I think I've seen an email before. Maybe it was the protect. I don't remember.

Hey guys thinking about buying a Nest thermostat.....bought a new house last year and got my solar panels installed last month. Would like to know if this unit is worth it? any problems with it lately? how long have you had the unit? I've read some of the reviews of those who purchase it on Amazon and see a lot of horror stories about the unit. So right now I'm 50/50 on the decision to buy.

Mine has been pretty good. I've had two problems and both were wifi related. The first issue I had was that my Nest would drop off the wifi if there was a G adapter using my N access point. I resolved it by getting rid of the G adapter. The second issue I had was out of nowhere the Nest would randomly drop from the wifi. I resolved it by updating my router firmware. Not sure why all of a sudden that issue crept up and was resolved by router firmware. This issue came up right after I had recently added 3 more tablets to my wifi, that may have had something to do with it.

Most issues I see reported are either wifi related or related to power. Nest says you don't need a C wire in most situations but I tend to disagree. Another issue I see reported is that a new firmware will come out and cause issues for people. Luckily I have never had an issue with updated firmware.

I think you are more likely to have a successful installation if your HVAC system is not very fancy. Mine is fairly simple, single zone.
If I were in the market today I would take a serious look at the Honeywell RTH9580. That didn't exist when I bought my Nest.

Just got rid of my Honeywell thermostat, but didn't get a Nest. Picked up an Ecobee3 with 2 additional remote sensors. That thing is amazing! More accurate than the Honeywell, and the smart home/away based on the occupancy sensors is actually quite nice. One of the big problems I had was that the house would be comfortable at night when I go to bed, but it would be cold enough to hang meat in the morning. The remote sensors solve all the inaccuracies of the old thermostat. The HomeIQ portal is pretty cool too. And, as a little bonus, I was able to integrate the thermostat and all the remote sensors into my Smartthings setup. Anyone shopping for a smart thermostat should definitely consider the Ecobee3.

Nest launches 2nd-gen smoke detector for $99, kills off Dropcam brand | Ars Technica
SAN FRANCISCO—Nest, the Google subsidiary devoted to home automation, announced a refresh to its product line Wednesday, which includes a second-generation smoke detector, a unified Nest app, and the rebranded Dropcam, now called "Nest Cam."
In a press event held in an art gallery, company reps touted the new Nest Protect smoke detector ($99), which features new dual-wavelength sensors that can detect "fast and slow moving fires" and can also distinguish between steam and smoke.

"We're really good at reducing nuisance alarms," Maxime Veron, the company's head of marketing, told assembled media, pointing out the new ability to disable the alarm from a smartphone. "When you burn toast, the last thing you want is the smoke alarm to yell at you."

The new Protect lacks the company's "Nest Wave" feature, which would allow users to silence an errant alarm by waving their hand under the smoke detector. Nest found that under "a unique combination of circumstances" the alarm could be disabled unitentionally. Now if you burn the toast, you'll have to whip out your smartphone.

According to Nest's press release, the new Protect has been redesigned to be 11 percent smaller and now sits "more flush against the ceiling or wall." The light, used not only for alarms but also as a motion detecting nightlight in the dark, is now brighter. The new Protect is also equipped with a microphone, which the company says is used for a once-a-month sound check—the Nest beeps, and the microphone listens and confirms the beeping still works. We get the feeling that privacy advocates will be uneasy about the addition of a microphone.

With the Nest Cam, the Dropcam brand seems to be dead—besides the hardware rebranding, the cloud video subscription service is now called "Nest Aware."

Veron confirmed to Ars after the event that the Nest Cam's hardware (still $199) is "mainly the same" as the Dropcam Pro. The big addition over the Dropcam Pro is 1080p support. In the past, Dropcam reps have said the Pro is capable of 1080p, but the feature was disabled due to bandwidth issues.

The stand for the camera has been redesigned and now has a rare-earth magnet in the bottom, allowing it to easily be stuck to a metal object. Night vision has also been improved thanks to new algorithms that can tell the difference between the sun (for day/night mode) and a temporary light like a flashlight or headlight.
Nest is also launching a unified app that can control the Nest Thermostat, Nest Cam, and Nest Protect from a single app. We asked if Nest was finally adding geofencing to the new app, which would automatically turn the thermostat on and off based on the user's location, but sadly, the answer was no.

The company also announced a new program called the Nest Safety Awards to incentivize further Nest ownership. Under the plan, homeowners who have Liberty Mutual and American Family homeowners' insurance can get a free Nest Protect and up to five percent off if they agree to regularly transmit the fact that their Nest is on and operational to their insurance companies.

"What's also important to us is privacy," Senior Product Manager Greg Hu said. "Personal info is never shared with insurance companies."

The Nest Cam and Protect can both be ordered now. The Nest Cam ships this month, and the Protect ships next month. The app should be hitting the iOS and Android app stores today.

I like the new iPhone app. It's easier to manually change temp and it shows humidity level on the same page as temp control.

They're back in the Apple Store now, maybe that happened a while ago but I noticed them last time I was in the Apple Store, first time I'd seen them since Google bought them.

Do they support HomeKit?

Well that answers that question. They're gone again because they don't support HomeKit

Maybe they finally got the f-ing think to keep track of fan run time for filter replacement. My old $49 unit did this!

uhhh... it should keep track of it.

https://nest.com/support/article/Wil...-my-air-filter

applies to 1st and 2nd gen. I would assume 3rd would as well, but it was just announced today.

40% larger screen and more PPI (they say 229)

They also added farsight that shows the temp or clock if someone from far way enters the room, not just standing in front of the unit.

Last is the furnace heads up, just scans 2x a year for any unusual shut-off patterns that may indicated a problem

are these things worth it? still dunno.

If I were in the market now I think I would get the Honeywell. I do think that the Nest looks good on the wall. The biggest features of the Nest are the auto-away and that it programs itself. I don't use either of those features.

The largest advantage of Nest is the pseudo-home automation aspect of it. It's getting better and the options are getting more interesting but it's not there yet. Once they create a Nest ecosystem of products, it could sway me to go to Nest. As a thermostat though...the Nest isn't all that great or different than the Honeywell.

I like my nest. Except that now it's constantly going offline. I haven't had time to call them.

If I had to do this again I would go with a home kit compatible thermostat.

Otherwise I have no complaints.

I just got rid of my Nest and picked up an Ecobee 3. Install was a bit more difficult as I had to put in a C wire on my furnace but so far it's working great. I got a bundle pack so it comes with 3 additional sensors but I haven't taken 2 of them out of the box yet. So now I have a sensor upstairs in my daughters room.

My issue with the nest wasn't a nest issue, but the placement of my thermostat. It is in my dining room, close to my living room natural fireplace. So when we're entertaining and have the fireplace going, my nest would think it's 73 degrees, but it would be 62 upstairs. Now with the additional sensor, I can check the temperature in both places and it averages out. So far so good, it's been about 3 weeks.

Revisiting my selection of smart thermostat because I need to add a second one upstairs so if I am going to switch from my Honeywell to Nest then this is the time to do it.

This post above was originally from 2014. Has Nest gotten anymore accurate or is it still +/- 3 degrees? I am still happy with my Honeywell but like a lot of the home automation stuff you can tie Nest into.

I just want my temps to be extremely accurate though so if they still can't be then I need to stick with what I have and just pick up a second one for the upstairs so I can link them together.

What do you think about it compared to the Nest you had before?

This post above was originally from 2014. Has Nest gotten anymore accurate or is it still +/- 3 degrees? I am still happy with my Honeywell but like a lot of the home automation stuff you can tie Nest into.

I just want my temps to be extremely accurate though so if they still can't be then I need to stick with what I have and just pick up a second one for the upstairs so I can link them together.
I might be doing the same thing. I really like the Honeywell I have but I'm looking to get more into the whole smart home thing and Nest or Ecobee seem to be the way to go.

I'll be adding a smart irrigation controller soon (massive rebate from the city to do so) and want to add an Amazon Echo to run it all unless Google comes up with a competing product soon.
