Doomie's Renovation Thread

I'm so mad at GFI's. I swapped several plugs last week and the GFI's would light up but the plugs wouldn't work. I reset and everything.

Make sure you wired them up properly. Invest in one of these Sperry Instruments GFI6302 GFCI Outlet Tester, 120V AC, 1 Pk.
Amazon Amazon

Also make sure you installed using the LINE TERMINALS, not the LOAD

I wired them just like how it was wired before and have a tester. One of the bathroom GFI's I didn't have to replace stopped working after I swapped out the other plugs. I ended up using non-GFI plugs since my gf doesn't really need to blow dry her hair and wouldn't do it in the bathroom.

EDIT: I looked at that tester and it's really neat. Maybe I'll invest in one in the future.

Ahhh.. .sounds like I know what may be the culprit. There is a GFCI outlet upstream in that circuit and someone daisy chained other GFCI. You have to find the top most one and make sure that thing is reset, then the rest of the outlets will be "on"

Top most one? FYI I swapped out the other plugs to non-GFI and they work fine.

Here's the kitchen after/before. The backsplash has grey in it so it ties with the wall.

Here is a closeup of the baseboards. Sorry about the pic, only part of the house not covered and with good lighting as the dining room light fixture is on the to-buy list.

Nobody's been using the 2nd full bathroom so I hadn't addressed the clogged sink and smell that started coming in after the paint smell went away. Well after dumping an entire bottle of Drano which was a waste, I shined a light down the drain (no drain covers in this house ) and saw some crap down there. Grabbed my long needle nose pliers and pulled out a water bottle cap and toothbrush Went to bed because the smell had gone away but I smelled it again this morning. I've looked everywhere so I'm getting worried it's in the wall. It's not a dead animal smell but is initially repugnant but then goes away. We did a full inspection when we bought the house and even though all the rooms had Damprid in them, he didn't detect any mold or anything. Ideas?

I'd like to organize my tools in the garage. I don't have a lot but I imagine this will continue to grow. I was thinking about a pegboard with hooks. I already have a shelving system in there that I can use for other items. Plus I'd like to hang long items like brooms, mops, etc. Any ideas for those? I'll post a pic of the garage if needed.

Last week I swapped out several plugs and plates to newer white ones for a nice clean look. Unfortunately the porch lights no matter how I wire them won't turn on. The switch has one normal vertical toggle for the interior light over the front door which also is controlled by a switch on top of the stairs (designed for walking up the stairs at night so you don't trip). To the right of the vertical toggle are 2 horizontal toggles. Prior to the change the bottom toggle would flip on the spot light (with a sensor) over the garage. The top toggle assume was for the porch light but I don't recall it ever working and I think the fixture is fucked because the bulb works fine as I tested it. After changing the toggle, the damn porch and spot lights won't turn on and I tried every possible combination of connecting the hot and feed lines to the 2 horizontal toggles. I even tested another vertical toggle I had lying around and nothing. Really hate electrical work
Couple of updates on some issues.

I think the smell is coming from the fan vent. The idiot owner had the fan unplugged probably because the fan was so full of shit and wouldn't spin without issue. I cleaned out all the crap that affects it's spinning and let that bitch run a while. The smell definitely decreased some though not 100%. Surprisingly I wasn't choking even while super close to it. I hate it when bathrooms don't have a/c ducts man.

Here are pics of the garage. So if I'm looking inside the house to the left is the breaker. So either in that corner there to put the pegboard for the tools or to the right of the door. You can see the level next to the garage door. That's where the old racks were and I'll use that same space again as the rest of the wall has the wiring duct protruding out. BTW that old alarm box is a fucking waste. I've been scraping ancient ADT electrical tape and wires off the windows. I assume if I take it off, it's going to have a giant wiring clusterfuck there? Oh and next to the breaker is the indentation for the washer/dryer. Since it's a 1 car garage, I don't plan on using that side of the wall because I NEED to park a car in here in the next few months.

Sweet!

From the pics, I saw a staircase; are you in a townhouse or detached two-story?

Also, I see you're in Miami; which sub-division?

Sorry for all the questions; playing catch up with all of the merged threads.

Ah ok, you're down south in Kendall... my ol' stomping grounds went to SMSA, class of '01

I'm up in Ives Estates; +/- 40 mins north of you.

Did your place need work [renovating] prior to purchasing?

We waiting a month before moving in and got some work done prior; we were with a new born and the wife didn't want to see any drywall dust anywhere.

What's SMSA? South Miami Senior? I went to Sunset. I've been a Kendall bro since '88. Yeah Aventura area, I'm never up there. So damn far, this county is massive.

We closed 2/15, 2/16 demo floor, take off popcorn. By the time we moved in on the 26th we had replaced flooring on the 1st floor, popcorn ceiling removed in the whole house, painted the interior completely, and new baseboards (a day after the move). Much easier and faster to do prior to move.

South Miami School of the Arts; rivaled New World School of the Arts back then.... I'm sure that rivalry still exist today.

It's not that long a drive if you hop on the palmetto to golden glades exchange or cut across the dolphin expy from 95 to turnpike or palmetto. 35 to 40 max regardless the combo

I agree - much easier to get work done prior rather then after the fact.

Congrats on the home and looking forward to the progress.

Good to see another local!

Same to you! I am still open to suggestions. I'm putting up the existing shelves in the garage this weekend but I want to start scouting other means of storage.

Doom, personally, I use the Gladiator Garageworks slatwall system. They have various hooks and bins and attachments to organize the garage to meet your individual needs.

@Doom878 I was just about to say, "well, what about the attic?"... but then remembered that you're a 2-story.

Are you looking for specifically for more shelves or closet space with doors to get ride of the clutter visually? Looks like your entire garage is enclosed with drywall, so easy to mount racks, shelves, & etc.

That rack system that Thoiboi recommended looks pretty bad ass; might consider it for power tools.

Gladiator is pricey - you can get 4x8 sheet of slatwall in just about any finish for $60.

The walls in my garage are pretty effed up (70yo house), so instead of fixing them, I'm just covering anything that isn't already covered by a cabinet with slatwall in maple.

I do have an attic in the master closet that I will utilize for some of that shit. I'll def be doing racks, shelves, etc. I have to figure out how to put it as I have a bike, house cleaning items (brooms, mops, etc), tools, stuff you can't hang (boxes), so I have to figure out how to design it.

I am considering slatwall as well. Maybe for not an entire wall. Maybe like half or the back wall.

Ok got a temporary workaround for the garage. Cleaned it up this weekend and I can park my car inside I put up the pre-existing shelves so got a lot of stuff out of the way. Most of the other boxes I just slid to the side but they need to be cleaned out (not my crap). Threw out some crap, consolidated some boxes to gain space. Found a filing plastic bin thingy where I was able to separate my tools. Again temporary but now we can park 3 at the house.

In the half bath we laid down new tile so we threw out the pedestal sink and bought a new vanity with sink/countertop. The old toilet we kept but need a plumber to reinstall and install the new vanity and faucet. My friend's handyman quoted me $180. What do you guys think?

Yeah, that does sounds like fraternity pricing... I'd get another quote or two over the phone to compare, just for comparison.
