about 3 weeks ago i was running and i had a sharp pain in my knee. There wasn't any swelling. It felt like something was pulled/overextended.
so i didnt run for 10 days and then i was doing a run 2.5 one day and rest the next.

that seemed to work pretty well and this past saturday i decided that i was well enough to run a 10k on sunday.

So of course the pre-race jitters of "well maybe there is pain in my knee" etc etc

i jogged about 1/3 mile before the race and felt real good. So i figure i'll start out real slow and take my time.

When the race started, everything felt fine and i was on a real good pace.

then after 3/4 -1 mile, the pain set in and i just went from about a 6 min mile to a 9-10 min mile.
it felt like i was stopped. i had to make the decision of stopping or keep running and modify my running pattern.

After getting passed by 2 dozen runners after passing them, i was determined to finish.

i found that keeping my left leg with the bad knee stiff and pushing off/kicking harder with my right leg helped.

so i managed to run the remaining 5 miles looking rediculous but finished in 48:08.

my feet were hurting because of the way i was running.
I know i could have run it in 40-41 minutes if i could have kept my normal pace.

So now i will take off the next 2 weeks to let my knee heal. it does not hurt at all when i do everyday things.

It only hurts when i run and there isn't any swelling.

There is always next year when i can knock 7 minutes off of my time. That will feel good.

that is all....

I definitely give you props for finishing a 10k with or without the pain. I used to dread the end of our season in college since regionals meant stepping up to a 10k from an 8k.

Keep us posted on how your next race goes.

ran 5.7 miles last night... most ive ever run at one time! there were so many little black bugs in the air tho. one went directly into my eye - that sucked. i had to have my head looking downwards to not get any more in my eye.

I go through the same issue with the bugs when I run as the sun sets or is dark in one of the parks I like to run in.

I did 6 miles the other day and since I have started lifting weights again I am gaining weight and slowing down some. Funny thing is I am even doing more cardio now.

ya i started running when the sun was starting to set and finished when it was already dark... they were mostly in the air when it was setting... you think they are out mainly during that time of the day? sunset? it actually burned a little when it went in my eye.

i swear i can run like atleast a mile longer and with less and shorter breaks when i go in the evening because it is cooler outside rather than when i go in the middle of the day and its hot and sunny outside...

Just wear some sports eyewear.

I get home from late summer evening bike rides with the little buggers plastered all over my face, neck, and upper arms.

I would wear sunglasses but when it's already dusk out and the second half of my run is when it's already dark out, i wouldn't be able to see shit, i can barely see anything when its dark out without the glasses...

And ya when I got home I noticed I had about 10 little black flying bugs stuck to my neck and face lol.

i think running with a baseball hat would work well in the dark with lights. I have noticed that the lights are pretty bright at dusk. If you are running in a colder climate there are running hats with brims and something that goes over the ears

^ Saucony ftw. I've had them for like 3 years now and they are still comfortable. Granted, they souls are falling apart now and need a new pair.

Aasics are also a great running shoe but I think I've fallen in love with Saucony.

Depending on how often you run, replace your shoes every year.

My last running shoe was made by Brooks and they were great - though the Saucony's that I bought are the best I've worn in 15 years.

you can get 300-500 miles out of a pair of shoes, so maybe 6 months or a year depending on your mileage

going to the orthopedic surgeon on tuesday to figure out what is wrong with my knee. after .6-.75 miles i get a sharp pain in my left knee. I can start out my run slow or fast and then systematically it will start at the .6-.75 mile smark and then i stop.

it's better for me to get it looked at not so i can rest it if i need to for the winter..

Now that it is getting colder out I swear I can run at a slightly quicker pace. The other night I did 5 miles in 36 min (good for me) .

Also, after reviewing some shoes I finally got some new Saucony Grid Cohesion NX's. Was looking at a few Aasics and New Balances also but had to stay with Saucony . On sale for only $39.99 and great comfort/fit.

Simple physics. The air is denser. Just as it seems harder to breathe when it's 100 degrees.

well, the orthopaedic dr says he really can't find anything. they took a few x-rays and he did all of his tests with my legs and feet.

He says that he wants me to take 2 aleve or 3 advil about 45 minutes before i run. if this doesn't help with the inflammation, he will refer me to a chiropractor that runs.

so we will do this for a week and see.

He asked about where i run. I explained that when i run on the road, sometimes i run against traffic and sometimes i run with traffic depending on the area if it's safe.

find a dirt path (if its not raining) or a nice grass field area to run on. itll have less impact on your legs. or if you cant do it, i guess theres always the option of going to the local high school or college and running on the football field in circles. thatll be boring though.

What do you guys think about those red high school tracks? Sorry, don't know shit about them.... they're kinda soft, they squish when you push down on them hard, so should be good for my joints, etc right?

Watched my future sister-in-law run the NYC marathon this weekend and got me thinking that I am going to get back into running also. Have not run since my senior year of high school. Went for a short run/walk last night through my housing plan. Probably about 3 miles. Feeling it a little bit today, but didn't want to overdue it like I normally do with lifting. I need to get the distance of the route I did with my car. Plan on competing in an adventure triathlon in July (2mile kayak, 20K bike, 5K run). Hope to compete to win in my age group. Figure I will need to finish in the 1:20:00 to 1:30:00 range.

Well, ran a timed mile last night at the local high school track to get a baseline of where I am right now to see how I improve over time since I haven't ran for about 8 years. Ran at a fast pace, but not all at, timed in at 8:23. I guess thats not to bad, but kinda depressing as I used to be able to run around 6:15, that was during high school though. Followed up the mile with a brisk 1/2 mile walk then 2 more miles at an easy pace. I must say, it feels great to run again. Think I am going to do my first 5k at a local Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, goal is to finish under 30 minutes.

Going to do 3.5 miles tomorrow morning before I go tailgate at the Pitt game. It has been so nice here the past few days, its going to suck once it starts to get cold again. I hate running on a treadmill, used to use the elliptical. Looks like I may be investing in some cold weather running gear or finding an indoor track.

Glad to see that there is a running thread on here. Like others, I use to run in high school, then in college I ran jst to stay in shape for soccer. This year I decided to get back into it and started training for some sprint Triathlons and Duathlons. This weekend I am running in the rock n roll San Antonio Marathon.

dallison- how often do you stretch your quads? Have you tried starting out with a 1 mile walk then stretch then start w/ a slow jog and gradually increase your pace. Even through your quads are not sore the muscles could be tighten up which would cause the ligements to pull on your knee which is what is causing the pain. Just try avoiding hills and ice it after you run.

i stretch before and after each run for about 10-15 minutes. each stretch is held for about 10-15 minutes each with no bouncing.

I have taken the dogs for a 1 and a 2 mile walk before i run sometimes and the pain still persists.

the hills where i run on most days are minimal.

Well, did my 3.5 miles on Saturday at a 9:34 pace. Felt pretty good, definitely could have pushed harder, but don't want to over do it just yet. Going to run after work, but need to decide with the weather if I want to run outside or at the gym. God I hate doing cardio at the gym.
